I think there would be far more negative reactions to a complete UI change then not changing it. A malware program I use completely changed it's UI and created a fire storm on their forum, all negative for the most part.

 

I'm all for UI improvements if it makes the product easier to use or functions better but not for a total change. I know where things are in ESS and can quickly do what I have to do without completely relearning how to use it. I guess my  age is showing when I say I don't like change simply for the sake of change.

 

It would seem to me that allowing users to make optional changes to the tray icon is asking for trouble. Obviously I'm not a software engineer but the tray icon has direct access to the program including the ability to disable it. I may be all wrong, not unusual for me, but it seems that a icon option would create a possible security issue.

 

I like the module update approach ESET has taken, So much easier then downloading and reinstalling the entire program.

 

Installed v8 over v7 on my Windows 7 sp1 x64 with no issues. Has anyone tried the new release on a XP machine?

No, not at all (remember the music talk ) Its not about age, its just about what we prefer and also of course exactly as you say, why change for the sake of changing.

 

I don't understand why people expect GUI changes so often. Especially not in products that needs to stay userfriendly and easy to use at all times. So why some of the other vendors DO change the GUI each year is a riddle for me, must be a bad habit. It simply isn't necessary to make a GUI "overhaul" for each new version.

In some respects, anti-malware software falls under the heading of systems/utility software, and there's going to be a limit on how far the user interface elements can be customized.  It can become pretty complicated to determine what's running on a computer at a glance if all the system tray notification area icons were open to all sorts of customizations.  

 

For that matter, what would happen if a malicious program "customized" the icon to show it as solid green when it should be flashing with some kind of alert?

To answer the specific comments about usability and web reputation:

• ESET's software does not incorporate voice recognition or speech synthesis, however, you can toggle "Text Mode" in the ESET Graphic User Interface on and off by pressing Ctrl+G. In Text Mode, the user interface presents an interface that is "friendly" to screen reading programs.
• I would like to point out that ESET does warn you if you visit a website containing Potentially Unwanted Content. And, as with detection of Potentially Unwanted Applications, the option to proceed is there if you really want to visit the site (or run that application, etc.).

I will leave feedback on the other feature requests, including, ahem, "ESET Porn Zone," to my colleagues.

Oh no! It's a joke, the stuff I listed are so-called features other vendors include in their security products. This is the outcome of yearly refresh security products, vendors add junk to make it seem new, or else it would have the same change log as Eset.

Hey Eset, just a quick question, please =)

 

Is the new botnet protection, an enhanced heuristics IDS algorithm, (enhanced detection system) that we find in the new beta version 8? (improved firewall function as eset calls it) I guess it works much like a behavior blocker, (or am i wrong it that assumption)  looking at suspicious behaviour. The only difference you can say, is that a true behaviour blocker depends more or less of user interaction.

Will the new, extended protection capabilities of the Exploit blocker, warn Eset users when you have an outdated version of Java, Adobe Flash player/reader? ( likes you get a notification when new windows updates are available for the user ) That would be a great service towards the users, mainly because exploits happens mostly because users have an outdated version of e.g Java.

And please, please, please, enhanced the parental control...it has too few functionalities.

Yes I believe ESET knows that but....

 

In the case of Arabic, the biggest challenge is in adding support for right-to-left languages in gui.

 

So translating is not all that needs to be done to make it work.

A colleague of mine has a similar Samsung SSD disk but didn't encounter any performance issue after installing v8. Does renaming C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ehdrv.sys and C:\Windows\System32\drivers\eamonm.sys in safe mode, one at a time, make a difference?

 

 

Well, I removed the version 7 and did the test again with version 8, the same problem occurs.

One possible solution was disable Scan on File open and File creation (Image on the link below)

My post regarding this, was that my benchmark "Slowed" down when i had "Disabled" protection via the icon in system tray. There were beta versions released in the past that a performance degradation could be noticed without running any benchmarks.

I still find that ESS has the least system impact on my setup from any antivirus products that i have used in the past. And using a specific benchmark like the samsung one that comes as part of their suite does not reflect on the "overall" performance of any setup. There are many factors that could affect performance, such as the chipset used , chipset drivers, sata drivers and even which way the drive has been setup up.

 

Bad performance on anything will be noticeable in day to day use, without a benchmark.
