Skier 7 Posted March 19, 2018 Share Posted March 19, 2018 I have manually updated one of my machines to ESET Smart Security Premium v11.1.42.0. On installation the option to select the language is offered. English is identified with a US flag and (as a UK resident) I find this annoying and insulting; Spanish isn't shown with a Mexican flag or Portuguese with a Brazilian flag. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language Whilst I cannot speak for ESET, I suspect the reasoning for showing the American flag is driven by population numbers who could be using said language. Perhaps a more reasonable request would be to show both the American and UK flags. But I am sure that would draw ire from people in other countries who also use English as their main language. It could be like the proverbial dog chasing it's own tail. Just my opinion. As I do not know, what flags are shown for the other languages? See the points re Spanish and Portuguese etc. Population size doesn't cut it as an argument: Brazil has a population of 202M against Portugal's 10M. Same with Spanish actually, we use the Spanish and not Mexican (for example) flag for the same reason (same with Brazilian Portuguese)--the flag represents the localization or style guide of reference, not the country of origin of the language. I realize this might be a fine distinction, but this is how we approach "localization" rather than "translation" when we match the record to a flag. There is probably only about 20% of the software on the planet that offers a EN-GB combination and even less of a percentage that offers and EN-GB with a British flag. Outwith a flag being present in during installation, you will never see it again If you have ever written code in any language on a computer , the industry standard is EN-US and probably the sole reason why it's been adopted by the masses this way. Plus anyone that is under the age of 30 will be unlikely to even realise that there is a difference, as autocorrect does people's spelling for them nowadays and still favours the EN-US format. jems 4 Posted March 21, 2018 Share Posted March 21, 2018 My wife is ENGLISH. That is - she is from England. UK means Great Britain & N. Ireland. Great Britain is England, Scotland, Wales, & N. Ireland. So to say English is language of the UK might get the ire of the Scots, Welsh, & Irish. ( and the folks up in Lancashire). If we decide to produce also a British English, Australian English and whatever language flavor in the future, that version will use the appropriate country flag. The USA uses the ENGLISH language; yes, it's been changed slightly over the years but it's still ENGLISH. The flag that identifies the language is the UK's Union flag (it could be argued that it should be the English flag but let's not confuse the issue). I suppose I should be flattered as an Englishman I can work out that the US flag is being used and ESET believes that it must use an erroneous identifying flag to assist the Americans in identifying the appropriate language (with apologies to US citizens here).
