  1. I think you mean archive damage. But as this question has not many to do with ESS here the short answer: For zip files there is no way to repair it AFAIK. Rar files you can sometimes repair/restore if they contain special data which allows this. I don't know which software can do this, but WinRAR is one example. But if you asked this because you saw such messages in ESS then don't care about this, because a file which is damaged cannot do anything badly.
  2. This should work. Did you tried sending a SMS command? hxxp://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2711#SMScommands

  4. Ahh... interesting. Maybe you want consider to report this to uBlock. But it's good to hear that this has nothing to do with ESS.
  5. Anyway, ... I won't leave this topic without an answer. As you maybe know ESS uses the Windows filtering platform. And also a detailed description of this is available online. EpfwLWF.sys (Epfw NDIS LightWeight Filter) and epfwwfp.sys (EPFW Filter Driver) are part of this. The "Epfw NDIS LightWeight Filter" you can disable in the network (adapter) settings - of course only for troubleshooting purposes. More information about the other driver you can get here: https://forum.eset.com/topic/2915-epfwwfprsys/
  6. What should I say. All of you perfectly explained this. Even the link to my original report was already given, so there you should find everything you need. Just another link as there is another explanation for the version numbers (because there was some confusion about this before): https://forum.eset.com/topic/3471-version-80304/
  7. Really? Well... in my case ESS showed a warning after I temporarily disabled the email client protection. This may be the case (however I never noticed it). However I was only talking about the two modules "email client protection" and "spam protection". If they are not used I think they have no impact on the system performance, so in other words it may not speed up your computer if you disable them.
  8. Yes this errors are understandable and you may prevent them by deactivating the self-defense (temporarily of course). Additionally you can close the ESET GUI like I showed in the first part of this video. Here are the settings for self-defense: But instead of modifying this settings I also know a few defrag programs which have an option included to defrag the system in a very early phase of the boot process. This way they can get around of all this restrictions and running processes which block files. I don't know if your software has such an option (it's sometimes called boot-time defrag or similar), but if it has then this might be the most comfortable and best solution.
  9. No email client and spam protection only provide the protection their name suggests. But AFAIK they don't affect the system performance if they are activated and not used, so you can disable them, but it wouldn't be a use. Additionally if you disable the email client protection ESS' icon will turn orange, so this might not look so nice.
  10. Well it's not a secret, it may be a bit complex, but it's easy to answer: Wi-Fi positioning system BTW I asked a similar question too: Small question: Does ESET Smart Security use GPS for Anti-Theft? As you can read there ESET Anti-Theft only uses WLAN to locate the device. GPS isn't actually used. (but I would appreciate it of course) No a website can't do this - unless you allow it, but every browser should notify you and ask "Do you want to allow site XY to use your location?" (or similar). You can test it e.g. on Google Maps. But a software which is installed on the system may be able to do this. At least until Wi-Fi is turned on, but I assume also applications can turn this on in Windows, so this might not be a problem.
  11. 1. Right, for direct connection I would recommend it. But when you use your (wifi) router then it might not be "required" to set it to public network, but you can of course still use it if you don't need local services like file/printer sharing and remote desktop. Normally your public/private network settings are automatically saved, so you only have to answer the question one time. But you already selected an option which should suppress this questions. 2. 3 times right. About the option I already wrote in 1) there. And yes, AFAIK you're right. Ehm disadvantages... Maybe that you can't choose between private/public network when you connect to a new network (such as a public wifi or similar). On using torrents this settings has no affect. AFAIK torrents should work with the firewall in automatic mode. If not then you can always create the necessary rules.
  12. Okay... If you are directly connected to the internet (with no router and thereby no local network) set it to public network. As you can't use things like file sharing in your local network anyway (because there isn't a local network) this isn't problematic. You will only see an application modification popup for modified files for which you created a permanent firewall rule. As you may do this often when using the interactive firewall mode it usually only happens there. In the automatic mode there shouldn't be displayed such a popup (unless you created some rules manually of course).
  13. Just FYI there was just published a nice summary from Arey Goretsky. Superfish: Lenovo goes on the bloatware offensive
  14. Well... I tested it with a local phone group, so I added a group, blocked it and deleted the group afterwards. But then there happen something strangely - it seems to be buggy. It displayed nothing anymore in the rules list, so where the name of the group was before it was just nothing now. And if I tapped on the name "without a name" EMS required me to choose a (new/other) group. Please note that I tested it with Android 4.4, but this shouldn't make a difference. But as you can see it doesn't seem to work this way. So you would either have to accept a group in your dialer/phone app or you must add all contacts one by one. Another strange but possible workaround would be to create a blocking rule for one contact and add all phone numbers you want to block there. However I don't know if this would be easier. Maybe it would be even more difficult...
  15. Mhh... I don't know how these "scans" work and what security vulnerabilities they can scan... But maybe they are only looking for version numbers to identify exploitable components? Okay in this case it wouldn't be possible to provide a one-click-option...
  16. Would this documentation be enough? ESET Command Line Scanner Parameters (ecls.exe)
  17. More about CTB Locker you can find on these sites: CTB-Locker: Multilingual Malware Demands Ransom CTB Locker and Critroni Ransomware Information Guide and FAQ
  18. Here you can find more information about HIPS: What is HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System) in ESET Smart Security/NOD32 Antivirus?
  19. Nice test! So a small explanation of the two scenarios: If a threat is detected and ESS/NOD32 ask the user then the process which creates or executes (or is) the threat is blocked until a user chooses a decision. And as this is in the second case the explorer it's of course also blocked and this is the reason why you can't open any programs or open the context menu there.
  20. Okay, but please don't uninstall the Epfw packet filter. I think this could cause much more connection issues and it could be difficult to install it again. But you can of course try it with disabling.
  21. Oh great! So let's see whether and if so how much the new GUI will be similar to the GUI from ESET Endpoint...
  22. That's strange... But maybe Marcos can answer you and say whether they could reproduce the problem or whether the Wireshark log helped them.
  23. If a file arrives at your hard disk then it will be scanned by the real-time-protection of ESS. This of course also affects files send by skype. A much better idea to increase the protection would be to upgrade to the latest version of ESS, which is v8.
