I tested the new USB-antivirus DriveSecurity. Here my feedback. For convenience I marked my feedback with this signs: + Praise - Not so good ~ Comments Installation: + At first: Very good idea! Its a good idea to protect also USB sticks. + Installation with the Installer is very easy - Why the EULA is stored on the desktop? This isn't a nice and it also isn't a sign of reliability. Why don't display the EULA only (like all other software does) or install it on the USB drive? - After installation there pop-up many windows at once. (It's not such bad but it isn't nice too.) ~ Only for information: I activated trail license, so I can't say what it does if you bought it. - After activating trail license I get an e-mail with a link where I should seen the "licence information". But I saw nothing because the link (links to this file) "redirects the request for this address in a way that will never complete." (Firefox says) Using: ~ It does not autostart of the drive and I understand why, but... - ...if so you should make it clear (in the help file) that the users must start the EXE manually! I think some users would think it don't needs to start manually. - The design: It is not the kind of design I know of ESET. The kind of design I know from ESET is simple, meaningful design. And this GUI hasn't this design. E.g. it has no windows-like border - the ESET software has it. And the design also looks a bit "compressed" like you have tried to put many things into a small GUI (Edit: = overcrowded). And another fact: The windows isn't resizable - all windows from other ESET software are resizable. Additionally also the background picture don't looks such reliable/serious. - Attention: The e-mail-address for the license is saved in plain text - no encryption is used (path: <DriveLetter>:\ESET\email.txt)! This isn't good because maleware (specially adware) can read this e-mail simply and send you spam. And also in the logs this e-mail-address can found simply! But fortunately you can delete this files without problems. - No self-protection: Also if DriveSecurity is running I can do almost all with the files in the directory "ESET" - Sometimes it has got over 60 MB RAM usage. Usually this isn't a lot but on older computers it can be a problem. - Removing the volume securely (with Windows feature) don't work correctly. After trying to do this - DriveSecurity exits but then you can't remove the drive securely too. + It has got a small help file. Nice! - It has no function for checking for another product version. (not only the update for the signature database) - If maleware is found it is deleted. Why not a quarantine? (or maybe zipping the file should also work) + its quite small - only 300 MB. That's good!

Description: A possibility to copy the ip adress or also locate the ip adress directly from the message of the interactive firewall. Details: There should be a possibility to copy the ip adress directly from the message "Do you want to allow this internet traffic?" from the interactive firewall. So you can better search on websites to who this IP belongs. And also a possibility to locate the IP address from the message window with services like hxxp://en.utrace.de or hxxp://www.geoiptool.com/en/. Something like this: And you could also auto-locate it and show a flag:

Now it will be strange. I tried to reinstall Flash Player and thereby I installed a new version of Flash Player (14,0,0,125). All OK. Now I went to the online settings manager. But the online settings manager don't save his settings. If I change the slider, go to another "tab" and go back it is set to the previous state. The same in Internet Explorer. And I can click the check boxes in Firefox (it don't check them). But there is another strange thing. There are other settings in IE and FF: And also Flash don't saves the flash cookie, which should be set by this cookie test website: hxxp://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Browser/FlashCookies/Default.html The text I have entered isn't displayed any more if I reload. Now another strange thing: With every reload I did in Firefox (not in IE) with the Flash Game site, there will created an empty .tmp-file in my download dir: And this files ignore my download dir set in my Firefox settings. These files will always created in the default download dir of windows.

I have installed Flash v 13,0,0,214 (the newest). And I tried to play this game with Firefox 29.0.1 and IE 11, but it don't work. All is black. Does it work to you?

On the American ESET website I saw a game. hxxp://www.eset.com/us/home/staying-secure/ (at the bottom) There is linked to the Flash file: hxxp://static3.esetstatic.com/us/flash/VirusKiller.swf But it don't work! It only displays a black background. So I can't play this game.

That's a strange thing. I think it is quite regardless of which language ESET or the OS is. It's important how you visit the website. (Maybe it's important where you have bought your license (in which country) but I don't know this) At first you visit the website: hxxp://www.eset.com/us/download/training/ If you then select your OS, enter a username and click on 'Submit' ESET tries to locate you! If you are not located in United States, Canada or the Caribbean it shows the website I told you. That's very strange because they really don't want that other users (of other countries) use this training! You can test this and use a proxy to go from another country on this web page. But that's not all. Then you can't use a trail username - you must buy it! Otherwise it says: '* Trial license. The Cybersecurity Training module is available with a full version of the product' And you must use a username of these ESET products: Source: collage of screenshots of the ESET website I also tried it with a username of ESET Multi-Device Security, but it don't work. OK, tried to install the English version of ESS. At first I installed it in an VM with a German OS. And it didn't show "Training": Then I installed ESS in another VM with an English OS and now it showed "Training" correctly: But If I click on ESET it shows a website where it says "ESET Cybersecurity Training is currently available only for residents of the US, Canada and the Caribbean.". I don't know how they get out that I'm not American. On the American website of ESET I also saw the correct link: hxxp://www.eset.com/us/download/training But finally: Why are you disallowing non-American/non-Canadian users of ESET to use this training? If they want to test the training and are not native English speakers they aren't allowed not use it (even if they bought an ESET software).

OK, at first: I'm using ESET Smart Security 7.0.317.4. And now to my questions: You answered it. Thanks! It trains the users of an ESET software in real-life situations. That's a great idea! I have never heard that other antivirus company's does this! And it's sounds really great because most infections of maleware or phishing attacks can be prevented if users are more carefully. (in my opinion - I don't want to start a discussion now.) Now to this. I don't see the part "Training" in ESS. (see screenshot) But I use the German version of ESS - maybe it's not included in this version. Or I must enable a special option? And also the link in the KB article don't work. I would be happy to test this training from ESET.

In the ESET Knowledgebase I saw several screenshots that have got a part "Training" at the left side below "Tools" and above "Help and Support". Description: Priority for firewall rules Details: There should be an option to change the priority of firewall rules. If this option would be there you could - e.g. - block the internet connection for an program generally and only allow to connect to a specific IP. And also the temporary rules (created if the interactive firewall is used) should have a priority, so that you can temporary allow all internet access for a program, except of the connection to an specific IP (blocked by an non-temporary rule) or reversed.

Ok that's a good explanation and so this "write-rights" sounds maningful.

Maybe it is not an issue about "third-party cookies", but I think so because of two reasons: If I disable blocking of third-party cookies and it works fine. If you login there are cookies set from "anti-theft.eset.com", but if you logout the site "eset-acs.accesscontrol.windows.net" is called. And log-in is not the problem - only log-out. And I really can delete all cookies from "eset.com" and "windows.net" and I'm not more logged in, but this isn't a solution because at the next login I also had to do it so. I think that "eset-acs.accesscontrol.windows.net" wants to do this (deleting cookies and maybe a bit more) during logout but it can't because I don't allow the access to the cookies (setted by "eset.com") because I'm blocking third-party cookies.

That isn't normal, maybe its a bug - it worked for me correctly and is quite fast. It detects many adware (like toolbares) if you put on the option to scan for PUAs (Potentially unwanted applications) in the advanced settings. It also already does so. E.g. "HIPS" protects the registry actions (you can also set it to an interactive modus). That's a glossary for (D)Dos-Attacs, not for maleware! Many listed words are only apply servers and not home computers, but the firewall of ESET also protects from (D)Dos attacks. Description: Firefox OS support Details: ESET Mobile Security already supports Android, Windows Mobile and Symbian. But there is another (quite new) OS for smart phones: Firefox OS. It would be nice if it will supported in the future too.

At first I have to say that I don't found a good part where I can ask this questions so I used this part. I wanted to protect Twitter with ESET Social Media Scanner, but I saw that it has got many rights about my Twitter account. I understand that it must have many "read-rights" but it also gets some "write-rights" - I don't understand why: "Update your profile." - Why should ESET change my age or some other information? "Post Tweets for you." - Why? It only should protect me of malicious code and not post something for me.

If I want to logout in ESET Anti-Theft but it doesn't work. Mostly there is shown "log-out in progress" and after this it goes back to the site I were before and I'm not logged out. I already found the reason: I had disabled "accept third-party cookies" (shown in the screenshot below) in the settings of Firefox (v 29.0.1). But it isn't a nice solution to enable it because to disable the access to third-party-cookies increases the privacy and Mozilla also wanted to block these cookies by default (I think they also want to do this in newer versions of Firefox but I'm not sure). So it's good to find a solution for this bug.

And why are you able to bypass the blocking of a phising website with one click?

We won't support that. There's always a good reason why websites are blocked. Users don't have all information needed to evaluate if a particular website is malware-free or not; permitting access to such websites by one click would expose a lot of users at risk as they might get infected easily. Yes of course, but maybe it's one of the sites without maleware* and the author or somebody else wants to test whether the website contains maleware or not. They can test it at VirusTotal or look at sites like (or use add-ons) like WOT. Of course they can't be really sure whether it's malware-free or not, but they can get more information about a site from many sources. I don't say "by one click". Maybe another warning should be shown before (like "Are you really sure? (...)") and the user must click on "Yes, I assume the risks". Also the "Go one website"-Text could be displayed as a small normal link, so that not everybody see the link at the first glance. And do you think phishing isn't bad as maleware? Because users already can go on a website if it is blocked by "phishing protection". * Maybe this sites, they want to unblocked, also contain maleware - I can't promise it.
