  1. Has anyone heard of AntiVirus Sentinel Pro - Adware & Virus Scanner - Network Monitor & Protection for Mac?

ESET is still scanning and found 9 threats currently. HTML/Pharmacy.A Trojan

    How bad is this?

It is not a well known product by a trusted vendor, and it has its limitations on your system being from the Mac App Store, plus over on Apple Support Discussions it is mentioned to avoid using it.

The threats are not too bad, it may just be from emails or your browsing history. At least ESET is finding and resolving them for you.  :)

I was going to buy Cyber Security Pro, but Multi-Device Security says it offers

Anti-Theft , Banking and Payment Protection and Antispam

I thought the pro had everything.

I wanted to mention this to ESET in regards to how they compare Cyber Security Pro with Multi-Device Security because it can be confusing...

The anti-theft and banking protection features they mention are only on the Windows version of ESET Smart Security (included in the Multi-Device package). Anti-theft is built into your Mac, if you activate 'Fine my Mac' inside iCloud settings on OS X. Antispam is called 'Email Protection' included with both Cyber Security and Cyber Security Pro. If you purchase the Multi-Device package, you will still get ESET Cyber Security (and Pro) for your Mac (the same product). I suggest only purchasing Multi-Device if you have more than one device running Windows, Android, or Linux. With banking protection, it is quite new to ESET Smart Security on Windows and I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually arrived on Cyber Security for Macs in the future.

Don't forget that you have 30 days to use Cyber Security (or Pro) for free, once you install and activate your trial, so you can be 100% sure you're happy with the product before buying it.

  2. When i used the update feature within ESS , i was prompted that the drivers it was trying to overwrite were OLDER than the ones i currently had on my system.

Like i said, there is a bug somewhere. Looks like ESS is advising me to install WHQL drivers over versions that are not yet WHQL tested.

You are right that it lists WHQL drivers, and I think this is an issue related to Windows Update & Windows 10.

The same issue occurs with Microsoft's own troubleshooter tool as explained earlier, see this topic on Windows 10 Forums for an example (there is also an ESS related topic about this issue too). So as both ESS and this troubleshooter tool use the same method of getting those updates, it is most likely an issue with Windows Update itself within Windows 10 and not ESS.

When you get the latest graphics driver from NVIDIA or ATI for example, and you run Windows Update in Windows 7 or Windows 8, etc, you still get an optional update (unchecked) to install the WHQL driver for your graphics card (as you say it is older). This would be the same case now for Windows 10, but these types of updates isn't displayed to us with Windows Update in the Settings app. ESS however, is still showing it the way it would be seen in previous versions of Windows.

In future as a workaround, ESS should change its default setting so it only notifies you of the Critical updates instead of also notifying you about other types updates, since Windows 10 doesn't let you install them via Windows Update at the moment.

  3. Does ESET protect apple mail? ESET port is set to 143, but mail uses 993.

Would you consider ESET better than Kaspersky or NORTON?

Email client protection shows 0 total

It doesn't protect from the email connection itself, but it will still protect you from any attachments or content saved, opened or run in the Mail app, due to the real-time protection.

Norton on OS X has improved, but in past experiences (including just recently) there have been bugs or basic features not working with no solution or workarounds until they release an update, and they do install a lot more files/processes into the system which has more of a risk of issues if Norton does not keep up with OS X updates. Kaspersky has just released an Internet Security product for OS X, however I have only used their Antivirus in the past. I noticed it doesn't have any firewall functionality, and on their forums at the moment it looks like their SSL protection is causing issues with apps/processes using icloud.com (which is problematic as most builtin ones use it) with no fix yet other than to turn SSL protection off.

It comes back to stability and how lightweight a product is, and I would still suggest ESET for this (or Sophos).

Once again this is just my own experience/opinion so feel free to try them yourself and see what you think of other products.

ESET is reporting JS/ShellCode.gen and cleaned it

This is which means it most likely protected you from using your browser or an html file on your Mac. I would suggest manually running your first 'In-depth scan' to see if there is anything else sitting around on your Mac.

Be sure to check e-stores like Newegg and Amazon as they run deals. I don't have a Mac but I know with my Windows ESS once you buy/have a license you can upgrade to the latest version for free.

Pretty sure it's the same, good point TomFace  :)

  4. Are you sure you have cleared proxy settings?

Microsoft has a quick tool you can use to reset Internet Explorer proxy settings (which Chrome uses), click the blue Download button under "Here's an easy fix" on this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2289942

After restarting, hopefully it should stop showing. Otherwise there could be something on your computer that is automatically changing the proxy settings back.

  5. heyyahblah is right, it is not a bug as ESET just uses the command line interface of Windows Update (you will see the same updates using Command Prompt or via Microsoft's "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter and clicking 'Hide updates' when run to see the list of available updates).

There was a thread about this update mismatch earlier, where I mentioned that my best guess is that Windows 10 is holding back on installing drivers (and Silverlight) automatically as users wanted to manually do it themselves or wanted third party manufacturers to take care of the drivers for their machines (HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc.).

For the moment, set the ESET setting to notify you of 'Critical' updates only (the ones that appear via the Settings app) or disable the feature as Windows 10 will install the updates for you anyway.

Perhaps in the future either Windows will fix the updating mechanism, or ESET will adjust to this current configuration set in Windows 10 in future releases.

  6. Here's my two cents...

Sophos Home is currently the best free option for OS X, they are known to be reliable and stable with their products and always keep up to speed with Apple's new updates and releases to OS X. It provides enough protection for files on your Mac as well as keeping you protected as you browse the web. My only downside with Sophos Home is that it can affect browsing if you have a slowish connection due to the way it proxies your connections. Avast, although once a well-recommended free solution for Windows (now the dozens of 'features' and constant prompts to upgrade is annoying), is still quite new to providing a solution for OS X and from what I've seen and read isn't as reliable or stable as Sophos or ESET.

ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro is so far the most well-suited paid product available for OS X at the moment, due to the variety of protection/features it provides for security on your device and while you browse, and for it's lightweight stability (doesn't impact the system, easy to forget you have it installed and feels like it's a part of OS X). The downside I see at the moment is it doesn't protect you from anything that uses HTTPS and cannot provide Email protection for current accounts that use SSL, but I have a feeling this will change in future releases.

To help you decide, I would suggest temporarily uninstalling Sophos Home (there's an Uninstaller in the Applications folder) and giving ESET Cyber Security a 30 day trial to see what you think (you can uninstall ESET with the uninstaller provided with the Installer you download), since you can just reinstall Sophos Home again afterwards. You could try ESET Cyber Security Pro for an additional Firewall and Parental Control features, but based on what you said you should be okay with just Cyber Security and turning on the built in OS X Firewall.

In short, ESET Cyber Security (or Pro) is my top pick for a paid solution.

However, Sophos Home would be my top pick for a free solution if cost is an issue.

By the way, AV-Comparitives does a great job reviewing most available products for OS X each year with screenshots too, which you can view here.

    -

Some of the top suites don't offer Mac versions and NONE of them can run on any iOS devices. Check your inventory (Windows, Mac, Android) and decide what your needs are.

Very true, or they provide versions that are not friendly to OS X and can cause more harm than good.

If you have other devices that need protection:

Sophos Home can protect both Windows and OS X devices.

ESET can protect Windows, OS X, Android and Linux devices.

  7. BTW I have to praise you for reconfiguring HTTPS at forum.eset.com. Now it got scored much better than the last time: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=forum.eset.com

    You finally get A-. :)

(Previously it was C if I remember correctly and this was a really out-of-date config)

But you can still improve your config...

As far as I see the cipher suite (especially the order) might be optimized and if you also apply the HSTS header you can also get an A+ from SSLLabs.

Tried it today, it's A instead of A-, very close to A+ now!  ^_^

  8. Tomas is right, Cyber Security is great for protecting your Macbook from the day you installed it. If you found no threats, at least you can now focus on other things like the apps you have installed, what is running in the menu bar, checking Activity Monitor for any apps that seem to use a lot of CPU and/or RAM, seeing if you have issues on a new User account, and even possibly reinstalling OS X. It could also be hardware based, if your device is getting old or something isn't right on the inside of your Macbook.

If you need some help for this, I recommend heading over to the Apple Support Communities or if you are still covered under warranty, to contact Apple Support as they will be the best for solving your slowness issue.

  9. Is this for ESET Cyber Security Pro or ESET Endpoint Security since you are running a server?

If ECSP, this may be similar to the firewall bug pointed out in the other recent thread here, if disabling the ESET Firewall makes it work and you've set all the rules.

To confirm, check the logs in Tools > Log Files > Firewall, do you see "no usable rule" or anything relating to the VPN server?

Also from memory, VPN connections are automatically made to use the 'Work' profile, so I would temporary test creating a universal 'allow' rule for both incoming and outgoing connections in the Work profile to see if that makes a difference.

  10. Try the following:

    - run the Uninstall tool with /nosafemode switch in normal mode (see hxxp://support.eset.com/kb2289/)

At the present time that link is not working (404 Error)

There is an accidental bracket in that url which causes the 404 Error. The link should be hxxp://support.eset.com/kb2289/, where you can download the dedicated ESET Uninstall tool.

    Español: hxxp://support.eset.com/kb2289/?viewlocale=es_ES

  11. The last thing I would try is to manually create the rules for the SSH, by either entering it yourself or by temporarily setting the firewall mode to Interactive, making the SSH connection and allowing them, then setting the firewall back to Auto with Exceptions.

If this still doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll need to wait for ESET to release a fix for this. I'll post a reply to this topic as soon as a fix or update is released as you are following this topic and will get a notification.

Depending on your license, you could also temporarily use Cyber Security (not the Pro version) for now and turn on the built in OS X firewall in System Preferences as a workaround (I'm doing this but with Little Snitch installed).

  12. Based on your log entry, there is an issue with 6.1.12.0 and the firewall for some connections being automatically denied that I reported since its release, and ESET is aware of this issue. To see if this is the reason for your particular issue, can you try to connect via SSH with the ESET Firewall temporarily turned off (either from the menu bar or in Preferences)? Does it then have trouble connecting again as soon as you turn the firewall back on?

  13. Hi Mike,

Cyber Security Pro at the moment shouldn't affect secure Mail accounts as it does not support secure protocols (e.g. IMAP with SSL/IMAPS). Two ideas:

    • Set mail protection settings back to default in Cyber Security Pro preferences if you have modified anything (by clicking on the 'Default' button on the protection settings window),
    • Quit Mail, double check Gmail settings in System Preferences > Internet Accounts (you may need to remove and re-add the account for correct automatic setup), then restart OS X.

Doing the second idea should resolve it as you will be starting the connection to your Gmail from fresh. If it still doesn't work, try turning off Mail Protection from ESET's Preferences and see if it connects, it may be that it has been set up to use the ports usually used for regular IMAP and/or POP.

  14. To access the folders inside ESET Cyber Security.app, you will need to right click on the ESET application and select 'Show Package Contents'. Alternatively, you can go to Finder and click 'Go > Go to Folder...' from the menu bar and paste /Applications/ESET Cyber Security.app/Contents/MacOS/ to be taken straight to the folder.

UPDATE: The binary was put to a zip archive to make installation easier.

    Thanks @Marcos  :)

  15. I am seeing this problem as well, currently running 6.1.16 on OSX 10.11.3

same problem for me as described by alyssafriesen

    ESET: 6.1.16.1

    maxos: 10.11.1

I kill the process > webbrowsing (any browser) works fine; but process comes back after some time.

    unticking Web-security makes no difference.

    any advise or workaround?

Although the same issue, the version you both mentioned is for the Endpoint variant, not the Home user Cyber Security versions in this topic.

However, @Marcos made this post in the relevant topic for Endpoints about this (topic is here: https://forum.eset.com/topic/5992-eset-endpoint-av-for-osx-61120-web-access-protection-severely-impacts-browsing/?p=40519)

A new service release should be available soon. We are still in the process of fixing bugs and subsequent re-testing by the QA department. For users with home version, we've prepared a fixed esets_proxy, however, it can only be used with ECS 6.0.12.

  16. To access the folders inside ESET Cyber Security Pro.app, you will need to right click on the ESET application and select 'Show Package Contents'. Alternatively, you can go to Finder and click 'Go > Go to Folder...' from the menu bar and paste /Applications/ESET Cyber Security Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/ to be taken straight to the folder.

Edit: Removed previous content as the original post has been updated.

  17. AVN,

I had this issue a few weeks ago (the setting would still not make it work) and it turned out that I needed to uninstall ESS and manually remove the ESET root certificate as it was still left over on my machine from previous installations or was getting mismatched with ESS (even after using the uninstall tool).

    1. After uninstalling ESS (backup settings if you wish), press Win Key + R to open the run window.
    2. At this point, close any running programs, especially Internet Browsers, Email, etc.
    3. Enter 'certmgr.msc' and press OK (need Admin privileges)
    4. Find ESET's certificate under 'Trusted Root Certification Authorities', right click and Delete it.
    5. Restart your computer and reinstall ESS.
    6. Activate, update, and restart your computer once more.

Since doing this, I haven't had any further error messages or issues with SSL or certificates, and actually solved my issues with ESS + IMAPS not working as well.

  18. This occurs with the current build downloaded from ESET since the Win 10 Threshold 2 update, as the current build contains older HIPS that won't be updated until ESS or NOD32 is activated and updated.

When the update is complete, the two log entries you mentioned are shown to the user as well.

HIPS will remain inactive and continue to have this occur until the user restarts Windows 10 for the updated HIPS to take effect, not shutdown (due to fast boot).

I suspect that this will be resolved when ESET releases an updated build soon that already contains compatible HIPS to avoid this.

Until then, this will always occur for all users if installing ESS or NOD32 on Windows 10 Threshold 2.

  19. @planet

Could you please share with us what OS X version the above mentioned ECSP 6.1.12.0 issues have been resolved; OSX 10.10 or OSX 10.11? I can't seem to find that in your revolve-log.

    Cheers

Good point - I will add this now. Most issues that have been resolved are on 10.11.x, due to both ESET and Apple fixing bugs/issues (like the iCloud Drive/Mail issue).
