  1. Is this with ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro? I noticed you posted this in Cyber Security which doesn't have any Firewall components, so it theoretically shouldn't be affecting Wi-Fi login popups.

When you mention ESET blocking the popup, is there any visual indication by ESET or is it just blocked? Are you currently using the latest version which is 6.5.432.1? What version of macOS are you using?

In this case, downloading the trojanized applications only, but not install them can compromise my newest Mackbook?

Not running the applications will not compromise your system, so in this case, your newest MacBook should be fine. To be safe, if you have performed an In-depth scan from ESET Cyber Security and found no threats, your system should be fine.

What kind of harm does this malware cause? I mean, how do users recognize it without a scan?

The intention of Proton is to remain hidden and provide a backdoor on your Mac to steal all sorts of personal information.

The WeLiveSecurity article that @itman linked provides a wonderful amount of detail about Proton — including how to manually check if you are compromised and what the payload does on the system.

The only solution I have at this moment is to use a bootable backup solution (Carbon Copy Cloner) from a friend of mine

There is also another option to download macOS High Sierra from the App Store on your main MacBook and create a bootable USB installer to use on your second MacBook, which you can boot into and perform the clean install. Easiest Instructions are provided by MacWorld: https://www.macworld.com/article/3204672/macs/how-to-create-a-bootable-macos-high-sierra-installer-drive.html

Can I infect her bootlable backup media?

As long as you directly access the backup media by holding down the alt/option key before booting up into macOS, it shouldn't infect it. Once you use the CCC cloned Recovery and erase your Macintosh HD from your MacBook using Disk Utility, all traces will be removed since you've completely wiped the hard drive.

  5. Hi @nwarp, that is an odd situation. The difference between ESET Cyber Security and ESET Cyber Security Pro should not affect your banking online in your web browser.

In regards to your Time Machine no longer working, I'd need more information about what you mean. Is macOS unable to backup to Time Machine, or can you not enter or restore files from your Time Machine?

In terms of trying to delete the Pro version, the only way to uninstall is to use the uninstaller for the relevant version, which you can view more information on the ESET Knowledgebase here: https://support.eset.com/kb3239/?locale=en_US. You can also use the Uninstaller found inside the DMG file you downloaded to install ECS or ECSP. Then you can restart macOS and install the version that you wish to use.

Apologies for the very late response to your topic. If you still need any help or you have found a solution to these issues, feel free to reply.

  6. Sometimes the license renewal results in a new license key to enter into your ESET programs, and they usually arrive in a seperate email shortly after the email confirmation.

If you did not receive that email, and your license has now expired, contact ESET or the reseller you renewed from as soon as you can and explain the situation so you can have this resolved.

  7. I've noticed using Google Chrome with ESET Banking & Payment Protection prevents the user from installing extensions from the Chrome Web Store. However, any extensions previously installed on the system that are set to install with all default/future profiles are able to get through and install inside Banking & Payment protection (such as HP Network Check Launcher). Furthermore, if you sign into the Banking & Payment protection window using your Google account to sync, any existing extensions will also be installed automatically.

Is this expected behaviour? If I wish to install the 1Password extension for Banking & Payment protection via Chrome Web Store to allow logins and passwords to be filled in securely and ESET prevents me from doing so, why does it not prevent the other methods mentioned above from installing extensions?

Will we be able to install our necessary extensions into Banking & Payment protection at some point, such as Password Manager extensions?

  8. Hi Came,

It sure does, detection has been available since 7th May 2017 according to ESET Virus Radar (OSX/Proton), and subsequent variations of Proton have been added to the definitions. Most recent one is variant D, which was added on 19th October 2017.

Because of this, ESET Cyber Security and ESET Cyber Security Pro should detect as well as protect you.

If it has already been opened without protection, as @itman mentioned and referenced in the ESET blog post, you should erase the drive on your Mac and fresh install macOS as it does monitor quite a bit on your system and just a simple reinstall on top may not remove all traces.

Apple has an article on how to reinstall macOS, which you can view here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904. You would want to install from macOS Recovery, and erase your startup disk (Back up everything first as this will delete everything from your Mac.)

But, what is the biggest difference between the Public Beta for macOS High Sierra and the Windows 10 Insiders Preview release, in which I can install any version - beta or not - of ESET Smart Security (Premium)?

My guess is that there is not enough of a user audience that would participate in public betas of macOS compared to Windows Insiders, so it is not suitable for ESET to try and constantly keep the Cyber Security suite compatible, as the inner workings are very different as well compared to ESS or EIS on Windows. From my understanding, this is also the case for most (if not all) other security vendors providing security software for macOS, as they normally release compatible versions around the public stable release date.

Hi again and thanks for the feedback.

However, we have decided to keep the forums as they are, because ESET Cyber Security and ESET Cyber Security Pro are more like ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus, which have their separate forums as well.
ESET Internet Security is much more similar to ESET Smart Security, than ESET Cyber Security is to ESET Cyber Security Pro.

    Thanks for the understanding!

    Tomas

No problem Tomas, thank you for bringing the idea to the staff team and providing us with a conclusion. That makes sense, that comparison went over my head when I originally posted that idea. :)

  11. Hello,

The link you provided states that this license is for 1 Device for 1 Year, meaning you can use this license for only one device, which can either be a Windows, macOS or Android device.

Based on what you’re looking for, you would require a license for at least 3 PCs + 3 Mobile Devices. However based on where you live and what ESET can provide locally, this may not be available to you, or it may be different.

I would suggest contacting ESET directly to discuss this further and provide you with the right license. You can usually find the ‘Contact' link at the bottom of the ESET website.

  12. One more suggestion regarding the forum — I noticed ESET Smart Security & ESET Internet Security are merged into a single sub-forum. As ESET Cyber Security & ESET Cyber Security Pro are very similar (with only the Firewall & Parental Control different), would ESET consider merging the two sub-forums into a combined single sub-forum?

MacOS High Sierra is coming later this year. That said, we don't officially support until it's officially released.

This is correct — ESET does not support Public Pre-Releases, Betas, or Developer Preview versions of macOS. Only the stable, publicly released versions of macOS.

Price will always play a factor in devices like this taking off and becoming mainstream, plus i would imagine that this sort of thing will actually become the standard in years to come from all "router/gateway" devices at no extra cost.

I can imagine this becoming a standard in the years to come with Internet Service Providers teaming up with security vendors to provide the usual ISP-locked gateway device, but with 'Bitdefender security' built in, or for current in-market gateways like D-Link to partner with Symantec to block and protect all devices for security.

This would be a large benefit as security vendors can focus more on a solid security product in a central point, rather than trying to create software for a wide range of endpoints that continue to grow. Blocking ads or trackers from the gateway would benefit TVs that stream online content, with the opportunity to block YouTube ads, for example, or the existing 'web/phishing/malware protection' to apply at the gateway level to easily protect every single device connected.

I can see many advantages to this. It will be an interesting time ahead in the next couple of years to see where it goes.
