  1. What are your results for ECSP v5 and or v6?

This is for ESET Cyber Security Pro (6.0.14.0) on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory and the built-in Apple SSD.

    Startup

    No difference.

    Shutdown

    Without ECSP: 4 seconds

With ECSP: 61 seconds, 24 seconds, 42 seconds (it varies per shutdown)

  2. Thanks again @planet for your constant updating this thread. Very helpful to others. Cheers!

    You're very welcome BDMSTUDIOS.

An update for this topic... I don't know if any modules have been updated recently or it's just being lucky, but after several reinstalls this latest install has been stable for the past five days with no crashes or freezes by esets_daemon. Basically, something seems to have solved the esets_daemon crashes for now.

Edit: Never mind, I am still having crashes.

  3. Hey planet,

The information in the following Knowledgebase article might be of use to you, as it includes some extra steps that might help your ESET product play nicer with Yosemite:

Thanks again for your help, but I was well aware of the KB article - I don't use iCloud on this Mac and I didn't have pre-release updates enabled (I always do a clean install of ECSP too).

The various issues and crashes have occurred on both a late 2013 MacBook Pro and an older 2009 MacBook Pro - The newer one has had a fresh install of Yosemite (complete erase of the hard drive first, no upgrade) and only a few third-party apps (like Adobe Creative Cloud), and the older one has had no third-party software installed except ECSP via a fresh install of Yosemite.

What's even stranger is that most issues I'm experiencing only occur after a few days of ECSP installed.

  4. Yes--we highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro (currently 6.0.14.0) when running these products on Yosemite.

Hi mceisel, I have been using 6.0.14.0 before the reinstall as well. The temporary solution at the moment is to not touch Media Blocking or Parental Control with 6.0.14.0 and Yosemite.

Edit: Never mind, I just restarted the Mac today and straight away ESET locked up and froze my entire Mac for over a minute, which meant some of ESET's processes stopping running, which then meant ESET's protection wasn't working, which finally meant that the ESET GUI wasn't responding. I needed to uninstall 6.0.14.0 until a solution is made. :(  As soon as ECSP uninstalled, everything started working as normal again.

  5. You would think during updates, either network would be high, or disk activity.

However if updates are sent compressed and decompressed in any way, the cpu would be used for decompression, with moving using disk activity.

You might be right. It's interesting because the CPU for esets_daemon shoots up the instant it gets to the 'update.ver' part (see screenshot in previous post), but if you try to update offline, it just shows 'Connecting...' for about five minutes but with no CPU difference (stays very low).

However looking at disk activity (and memory usage), esets_daemon barely did anything if there's isn't an update available even though the CPU went to 100% or over.

  6. Small update - just after over a day after reinstalling ECSP and I'm not experiencing any crashes or any major issues.

This time I did not enable Media Blocking or Parental Control at all, which may either/both/neither be the cause.

Edit: Still having issues. The esets_proxy 'broken pipe' logging issue and shutdown delay issue is still occurring.

  7. Thanks, planet.

However there was no real new version. The only update was a minor update that should contain some bug fixes, but on my device it instead produced a new bug.

Well, at least it's grabbed the attention of ESET staff and moderators though and they are now aware of what you've said so far.  :) I'm pretty sure after some time you may see a few things here and there. Hoping it's going to be the same over on the Cyber Security side of things.

  8. Thank you very much for the help, it really was helpful, I did not know that about TM files.

My FB account is, I believe, safe, i change my passwords often and use zero applications. Are you suggesting that it really is a genuine message meaning I do have malware? I checked their help section and, as far as I comprehend it, they think I may have malware because of the content I post - which is surprising to me since most of my posts are articles and news. Hence, I think it is just algorithm that evaluates this (e.g. the websites, links, etc.)

If you use zero FB applications and you believe your Mac is not infected (you did do a clean install) then you are more than likely correct.  :)

  9. Hello,

I'm experiencing random freezes and crashes by esets_daemon when using my Mac running Yosemite.

So far it has frozen my mac and crashed when:

    • Trying to edit Firewall Rules
    • Starting up my Mac (as soon as loading is complete)
    • Browsing the Internet (clicked on a webpage link)

When esets_daemon freezes, I'm unable to use my computer as it is frozen. After a while, esets_daemon crashes and then the Mac is usable again, but then protection or the GUI is no longer working due to esets_daemon not running anymore, forcing to restart the Mac.

  10. Hi all,

I'm still on version 5.0.115.0 Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) running OSX Mavericks 10.9.5. How are you reviewing the latest version 6.0.14?. Have noticed topics about CPU usage and slow shutdown. Are all recent issues ,firewall entries & crashes fixed in the new version? Thanks in advance for your input! Cheers

    Hello,

I often update this topic if you need to see anything that I've discovered or experienced and has been resolved by ESET: https://forum.eset.com/topic/2286-ideas-feedback-for-cyber-security-and-cyber-security-pro/

In terms of what you've mentioned:

    • CPU usage only rises during update, however it doesn't seem to impact performance in any way whilst using my Mac (it's why I never knew about this until someone recently made a topic for it);
    • Slow/delayed shutdown (topic link) does occur with ECS or ECSP installed, however because it's only a problem when shutting down it isn't too much of a problem during use of your Mac;
    • Parental Controls (and in-browser messages) (topic link) have been fixed as of 6.0.14.0;
    • It is now Yosemite compatible (topic link); and
    • Internet browsing (topic link) seems like it's fixed for some (me included) but not for others apparently. (Edit: Still experiencing this issue)

In summary, version 6.0.14.0 is okay to use and you shouldn't really have any major problems.

(Edit: You'll need to try it for yourself and see what problems you have - you can also go back to version 5 if necessary.)

  11. I have 6.0.14.0 ... so far no obvious freezing during surfing

    Great!  :)

We have installed 6.0.14 and freezing is, unfortunately, still a big problem.

Also, restarting the mac triggers a 90 seconds wait before the system shuts down, probably due to wait for processes to terminate?

Uninstalling ESET remedies both problems, so CyberSecurity is defenately to blame. :(

Our computers are running OS X 10.6, 10.9 and 10.10 all experiencing same problem (latest software update on all OS).

Internet connection freeze can only be remedied by restarting.

Logout and login does NOT help!

Problem typically experienced after system sleep/wake.

    This is disappointing to hear.

The shutdown issue has it's own thread if you would like to contribute to it: https://forum.eset.com/topic/3341-os-x-shutdown-delay/

What you are describing in terms of the surfing freezes is very similar to how I was trying to explain it with earlier versions of Cyber Security 6, and I also noticed it especially after system sleep/wake.

Just to confirm if it's similar when you mention 'freeze', after clicking on a link or entering an address in the bar, the browser shows the progress bar and doesn't continue loading, eventually just showing a blank page or a browser error page, or it eventually loads after a very long time. I've noticed in the past that if you try to refresh at least four or five times really fast, the browser is then able to get through and load. If what I'm describing above is not what is happening, what happens during a 'freeze'?

Have you tried doing a complete uninstall then a fresh install (instead of just installing a new version on top of an existing installation)?

  12. First, yes, Janus is famous and we've missed him...second, we (I know I do) appreciate you all janus, Arkasi, swek, rugk, tomface as top contributors to the Forum and excellent resources for ESET on the Forum (me just posting to this thread with this elite group is an honor).

Also, on behalf of me and Aryeh, each of you (@Janus@Arakasi@SweX@rugk@TomFacesend me a PM with an address that can accept a small package sent from ESET, San Diego.

    Absolutely amazing guys!!  :D

  13. Because you upgraded to Yosemite, the ESET application in your Time Machine is probably for the previous version and you should download and install the newest ESET Cybersecurity to ensure that it is the version compatible with Yosemite. Follow the instructions here to download and install:

On top of what foneil said, it's not ideal to try to recover applications from Time Machine that required an installer (like Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and also ESET Cyber Security) because they normally have more files set up and configured outside of the Applications folder. Using their installers would be the best method.

With the Facebook message, it is a genuine message and they do have a help article on it. Because it is detected by what's happening on your account, I would suggest taking the time going through your messages you've been sending, your Activity Log (you can access it from your Profile) and also going through settings (click on the arrow on the top right, then click Settings) to check for any applications you have that you really don't need and to secure your account.

  14. Hi again,

So I did confirm with our subject matter experts that at this time there is no way to further accelerate the Time Machine process with RTFS engaged and the scanning exclusion in place. It might be worth taking 5 minutes to go back through the article just to double-check that you have the right files excluded, but I can tell you're a savvy user from your records on the forums so I suspect you did it correctly the first time.

Thanks CB530 for looking into that for me, I'll double-check the exclusions.

Once again thank you for your assistance.  :)

  15. Hi Planet,

My apologies for not getting back to you. I am going to reach out to a colleague with more detailed knowledge of Cyber Security Advanced settings and see if they can better assist you here.

Thank you CB530, no need to apologise - completely understand.  :)

  16. I updated to 6.0.14.0 and for me this update seems to work well. Sites that previously caused 100% CPU usage are now responding in a way I expect.

Glad to hear that, looking good so far...  :)

Same here, latest ESET Cyber Security Pro (6.0.13.0) causes random freezing in browsers

More time has passed since my original post and both my iMac and my son's MacBook Pro have been on version 5. In that time, I have experienced no blips in my surfing. So, Eset...looks like this one is over to you. It looks like 'planet' offers a little more insight than I had and some starters for a technical investigation.

With the new version 6.0.13 not only surfing freezes, but I am unable to download any files from the Internet through my browser!

This issue has been bothering me since the 6.0.13 release on my macs.

Wondering if you four are willing to try out the 6.0.14.0 release to see if this also resolves the surfing freezes for you? There's also a couple of other fixes and is OS X Yosemite compatible.

  17. Hi Catalin,

That's strange, I'm not able to reproduce this while downloading updates.

I was able to see the CPU get to 100% only when it was installing the updates for a few seconds, which is expected.

Do you experience any issues when downloading or installing updates?

Does the CPU gets that high for a short period of time for installing, or also downloading?

Does it continue to happen after restarting your Mac?

Are you using regular or pre-release updates?
