I have ESET Internet Security v12.1.34.0 licensed. I'm using a firewall in Interactive mode. A few weeks ago I've noticed this bug: firewall starts to ignore existing rules and spams interactive popups Allow/Deny for the connections which was automatically handled by the permanent rules before the firewall was temporarily turned off (for example for Firefox web browser and other apps). This happens after I disable the firewall using the "Pause firewall (allow all traffic)" command from the context menu on the tray icon and then turn it on again using the "Enable firewall" link on the Home tab in the window.

It worked fine a few months ago.

Edit: I've also noticed that I can't create new permanent rules from interactive popup after this happens it does not even asks for windows admin permission just Error message pops up at the screen corner saying "Failed to create rule".

I reported the same bug a few weeks ago. But then these errors stopped, so it looks like either it was already fixed for some time, or may be you need to cleanup your PC using some system cleaner and reboot. I do cleanup after some programs updates, including Windows updates if there are some issues. It also allows to auto recreate large system service and boot files. Sadly some programs leave remnants at update, which may conflict with new code.

If that does't help, may be try to uninstall & cleanup & reinstall Eset. Consider resetting to defaults your Windows Firewall as well. The reason is, there may be other Eset features that didn't work in your setup, but you simply don't know that since you never tried to change other settings. 😉

It could be that the user is not using pre-release updates. @Zur13 open eset - hit F5 to go to advanced options - open update, click the + symbol on profiles then the + symbol on updates. For update type if set to regular update change to pre-release update and see if that fixes it.

Appears to be an Eset issue.

It was a false positive detection. They happen with all security software. Thankfully and historically, they are a rare occurrence with Eset software.

And not to mention eset was quick to rectify it.

Admittingly when I saw this post I wondered if it was another program that had been hacked and used to try and infect its users e.g. via updates etc., something i feel is going to be a common occurrence in the next few years

You have peaked my interest, apparently v11 was a hog, perhaps v12 is improved. As you know egui was never really the issue its the erkn that is the hog and has gotten bigger with subsequent releases. What is the idle ram allocation of the two services for v12? Assume proxy egui and erkn are running? is there any other services running? I'm assuming if its checking UEFI there is no some overhead for boot times too. Again features not everyone will use or need. Smart compact and efficient protection is where ESET needs to focus going back to the older version philosophy that put i on the map compared to others. proxy gui is a good start but who know what else was added in to make it feature rich.

I can't remember if 11 was a hog but the problem is a lot of those that used it and complained probably didn't send in any logs. Eset will always try to fix issues if it can see them

I could rename the file, and after restart the firewall module disappeared from GUI. Then I ran the game without the firewall module, but still crashed.

Try disabling a few things then to see if something else of Esets could be blocking it.

Also are you on pre-release updates which is generally recommended - Hit f5 - go to update and then profiles and then the update part in there. In the update type bit try it with pre-release selected - sometimes bugs get fixed but not always rolled out straight away to the main bit.  However I'd also recommend disabling parts to see if you can find out exactly what part of eset could be blocking it

    Unfortunately the renaming not working.

With EAV there is no problem.

When you said renaming did not work - do you mean it didn't allow you to rename or it did but didn't fix the issue. If it didn't allow you to rename it make sure you are in safe mode.

Have you looked in the firewall troubleshoot wizard found in setup - network protection - see if anything is being blocked. In the network protection - connected networks is it set to a home network? Probably won't be what is causing the issue but I had a problem a while back with things being blocked because it was set to a public network instead of a home network.

The only other thing I can suggest is disabling parts one by one and each time you have disabled one try the game. This may help to identify the issue e.g. if you disable one part and the game works you will know that that part is partly the issue. Just remember to enable them later for security

I keep getting pop up ads from your firm asking me to renew my license.  I don't recall having your product, nor do I wish to have it.

Hope can I stop these annoying pop ups that occur a dozen times a day?

    Thanks

Could you take a screenshot of this so we can try and identify the issue? Is this on the PC itself or via the browser. The only time I can imagine Eset warning you to renew your license is if Eset was installed.

If you use W10, you can enable Windows defender for scan periodically and/or sometimes scan with Malwarebyte free

Doesn't Windows Defender get disabled when Eset is installed? Maybe I could be wrong.

I do use Malwarebytes as I have a lifetime license (sadly discontinued now), but generally using another AV is not recommended, certainly one with real time detection. The issue is that both security programs are trying to do the same stuff and could cause conflicts. This in turn could help a virus slip past while the two are arguing with each other.

Best way to think of it is like having two firewalls with both in interactive mode. You open a new program and both firewalls try to detect it and ask you what you want to do - this wouldn't be good as both are trying to ask you or block it at the same time

  8. Hi there

I was just wondering the other day if virus signatures are ever deleted? As definitions are updated daily, I've seen some worry that definitions could become too big. Some due to this prefer whitelisting but it has its flaws. So I was curious if signatures ever get deleted e.g. if a virus is extremely old, possibly designed for a system no longer used or a version of an operating system no longer supported etc.

From the basics that I do know, some signatures are sometimes merged together e.g. signatures based on the same or similar virus but that's all I know.

There is ESET for Android (which is Linux based), why no ESET for the iPhone (which is iOS just like MAC)?

    Problem caused by Apple?

Im sure i read somewhere its to do with apple limitations

I fully agree. As to the programs, i had to phase out CCleaner...even though no AV spotted issues. I am also becoming wary of "driver updaters". Iobit for example. I use it, but while most times the drivers it asks me to update can be updated from "Device Manager" simply clicking on the update option of the relevant file, at times Iobit driver updater spots "updates" that i can't see from device manager. I wonder where those come from and who manages them.

A lot of the driver update programs tend to fall under potentially unwanted programs. They often contain unwanted stuff and can nag you a lot to upgrade if you are using their free version. Many may actually cause more harm then good. I have myself used some driver update programs before, used to use slimdrivers but it seemed a bit risky. Just use intel driver assistant now.

As for ccleaner i still use it and seems safe. However it was quite odd because at the time of the issue Avast had bought or was buying it.

Lately its been Asus that has had a similar incident. This also shows the dangers that can occur with AVs that use white listing.

  11. Like many have said Windows 10 isn't as bad as a lot of people think. I feel like it takes the best of 7 and 8 and combines them. Also MS is making it easier to pause updates in the May update I believe which has been one of peoples main criticisms.

A lot of people aren't keen on the amount of updates but I'm actually a fan. I always found in the past MS was playing catch up often spending ages on the next OS that by the time it was released it was behind so I like that it is constantly adding stuff although some stuff should maybe be optional.

And Eset saves me from another problem. Threat confirmed by the website once I contacted them.

My thanks for making my money worth the investment.

This goes to further show that people who say they don't need an AV are kidding themselves. Don't get me wrong, sticking to trusted sites/trusted programs is a good way to stay secure but you still need an AV. Many legit programs for example have been hacked and used to infect users.

  13. Not sure myself what it could be - maybe someone else will have more of an idea. However rather than reformatting it might be best to collect logs with eset to see what it could be and double check the sites your visiting are safe. If it is a virus something must be causing it although not sure if it is

As a practical matter, I am not sure how useful a EOL'd security product is for your clients. If I am reading the chart correctly, v6 is six years old and lost support two years ago.

Unless the user wanted to possibly use the license for the current version.

Eset doesn't license per a version so the license will work with future versions e.g. if you buy a version and a new version comes out a few months later you can update for free.

However I have no idea about old unused licenses

I added the "Paranoid" mode as an extra but, in my mind, the difference between the MAX and the PARANOID level is that one enables most security options WITHOUT those that cause the most hassles (constant notifications, fake positives etc.), while the paranoid one enables everything and makes most interactions manual so that the user can't miss anything.

There are options that if enabled allow you to have a much better control, yet...they pester you with notifications.

This with the clear idea in mind that ESET standard settings are ok for most people. The core idea for me is adding the "SEARCH" bar. I found it timesaving on other software. As the complexity of the UI expands, especially in complex suites like ESET, having to go for multiple clicks and through error/trial to find what you need might eventually become a joykiller. Adding that Searchbar keeps everything as is but makes it much easier to find things. In particular if supported by autosuggestion. I have to reiterate, not all users have the time and patience to dig into those menus and at times solutions are needed in a timely manner. Why have to go to forums and databases to have answers you can get from the UI?

I can get behind the search option but not the different protection bits with the paranoid option causing more issues. People will activate it not knowing what it is just thinking it will give the best protection then will get shocked when they get asked to confirm every action. In the long run it could lead to people being unhappy about the amount of prompts, possibly blaming eset and damaging their image.

As Itman has noted eset is very customisable so you can do what you want, add custom stuff etc. but users do this at their own risk and eset reccomends the default setting for average users
