CUrrent AV endpoint is 5.0.xx on Windows pc's Looking to upgrade to V7. Is it required to uninstall the existing 5.x first? If uninstall is required, with the V7 installer that has AV remover built in work correctly?

Hello. As the difference between the EP V5 and EP V7 is significant, the best would be to first uninstall V5, reboot and then install V7 on a "clean" system.

The best approach would be to:

  1. Deploy your new ESMC management server
  2. Install ESMC management agent to machines, where Endpoint 5 in installed. Once installed, it will "take over" the EP5 installation, and start managing it from V7 server.
    1. Make sure, that endpoints are activated - username and password is inserted into config of V5. you can do it either from V5 server, via policy, or from V7 server, by the means of product activation task
    2. Make sure, that endpoint V5s are not pointing towards the mirror used in ERA V5 (if it was used). if your endpoints were updated from the internet, disregard this point
  3. Once ESET management agent is installed, you can start with V5 removal
    1. (theoretically, you can attempt install V7 over V5 on a set of test machines - if your environment is fairly consistent (same OS, same software installed) and it would work on a few test subjects, there is a very high probability it would run without any issues on rest of the machines too).
  4. As soon as V5 is removed, and computer rebooted, you can deploy V7 via any supported method, preferably using "software install task".

It depends on how many computers you have with Endpoint v5. If too many, manually uninstalling it via the Start menu or Add and remove programs would be impractical.

for this example...lets use one pc that is not managed(standalone)....what is best way (setting time it takes aside) to uninstall V5 before installing V7? Use the V7 standalone install that has the AV remover built in....or uninstalling via add/remove programs ? Either way should work but which is ESET recommended way?

Personally I recommend installing newer versions from scratch, especially if one has encountered issues lately. This is to rule out the possibility that issues were caused by ESET misconfiguration (e.g. if the user created customer HIPS or firewall rules that blocked certain operations).

If you have plenty of time, uninstall Endpoint v5 and install Endpoint v7 from scratch. Basically you shouldn't need to configure anything else after installation. If you were short on time, you could install EPv7 on top of EPv5 or EPv6.
