    Hi Skier & Peteyt!

    Thanks for the responses.

Yes, I have found Bitwarden, and generally it IS great.

It is just NOT intuitive enough to cope with multiple google accounts.

Some thing I will (again) raise with them.

    ciao

I use Sticky Password myself which ESET's old password manager was based on. It is okay but has some missing features and isn't really updated a lot.

I found in the past when job hunting some sites would use the same service and have the name in the subdomain which used to confuse it. Not sure if that is still the same

Some years ago I tried to get ESET's password manager to work and couldn't and initially went with LastPass.  I ditched it following a data breach and the move to only offer the free product to one device.  Now with Bitwarden and it's excellent.

NB. I haven't recently tried to get ESET's offering working.

I should note that eset uses a different product now password manager wise

Yes, EsetPerf.etl can be huge; it can grow to gigabytes in minutes, hence we recommend keeping the logging enabled only for a short time. You can compress the file, upload it to a storage location and pm me a download link, we'll see if there's something interesting, such as a high CPU load logged.

https://easyupload.io/an7iw8 sorry for the delay - not sure if this will be any good, but I've also recently updated Eset to the latest beta and will also monitor that to see if the behaviour has changed.

I've received an official statement on license auto-renewal from ESET LLC:

We’ve had the same “forced” autorenew experience in place for several years.

Legal and many many others have had their eyeballs on the current set up and we can confidently say we’re not in violation of any laws. When clicked in cart, this is the disclosure we show to users:

    image.png

The post purchase receipt email provides direct instructions how to manage one’s autopay settings, including a direct link to the eStore My Account to do so. We also send a notice ~30 days before license expiration, reminding the user about the upcoming charge.

Autopay and myESET are 2 separate systems. The latter will be renamed ESET HOME soon and is where the user can manage their license, set up parental control, etc. The former is a customer portal where the user can update their autopay settings or see their purchased licenses. The eStore My Account will be deprecated in steps over the next several months as we move toward the Global eStore.

To avoid other complaints/confusion, would it not be better to have a slider on the page so the user can have it disabled when purchasing rather than having to get the user to agree to it first before opting out.

    Hello @peteyt,

the fix for the stuck notification has been committed so new builds should have it fixed.

When it comes to e-mail notification in Slovak language it seems you submitted the ticket directly from the application and you have it activated with your Insider license (those are registered on ESET HQ, which is in Slovakia), thus you received the autoreply in Slovak language...

    Peter

Ah good to know. Do you think it'll take a while for the fix?

  6. I have reported this possible bug via the android app's built in support but thought I'd also post it on here. I should also note that I have my app set for English but the automatic reply came to my email in Slovak. I should also note I'm using the latest android version, but the beta.

Basically when downloading an app eset will show a notification on android that it is scanning the new app. You can see the notification by dragging the top of the phone. This notification never goes but opening eset you can see the scan finished. The same behaviour happens when running a manual scan. I have to restart the device for this to go away.

    Review this article: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/744537/cannot-remove-browser-assistant-even-w-frst-eset-adwcleaner/ .

Toward the end of the article, note the only way to get rid of this bugger extension was to delete the reg. key associated with it. Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner, and like apps are "tuned" to detect this type of crud-ware and eliminate them. And in some cases, it is necessary to resort to Farber Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) with expert assistance to get rid of the stuff.

But really the question is should Eset be tuned to detect this kind of crud-ware or am I missing something?

Years ago I know AVs focused more on viruses and you had dedicated things for the likes of spyware and so on but now AVs are designed for all kinds of Malware.

Just doesn't sound good if we are having to recommend people use another tool unless as I say I am missing something

No, from all the web articles written about it.

Refer to this: https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/18544-web-protection-for-chrome-browser-hijacker for further details and how to remove it from Chrome. Note: Do not use the Combo Cleaner mentioned in this article to remove this extension. If you can't remove it manually, Malwarebytes (trial mode) with real-time protection disabled should be able to do so.

It appears Eset detects the extension when Chrome starts up and the alert being generated will remove it for the current current browser session only. You need to remove this extension from Chrome to eliminate the Eset alerts.

Maybe I'm being a little stupid but if malwarebytes can remove the full extension why can't eset?

When you uninstalled Eset did you uninstall normally or via the uninstall tool in safe mode? If not I'd recommend using the link bellow and running the tool, as it should remove all traces of Eset - it sounds like something might be leftover that is causing these issues

There was no EsetPerf.etl in the Diagnostics folder. If you enable , click OK to save settings and disable it after a few seconds, is there really no EsetPerf.etl in C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Security\Diagnostics created?

That might be the warning - it is 4.07 GB in size. I can upload it or would it be best to delete the file and re-do the logs on the next update? Was created on the 2nd September and last modified today

Next time this updating issue occurs, use a network connections monitor to ensure ekrn.exe has a solid connection to port 8888. You can use Eset's Network Connections tool or TCPView. I prefer TCPView since it will show if there are sync issues with the connection to port 8888, ekrn.exe is trying to establish. Eset uses port 8888 with fallback to port 443 for Push Notifications. If there are issues with getting that connection, it will cause this bork Eset updating behavior some are experiencing.

I downloaded it but was setting logging up so didn't have time to run it during the update - Should erkn.exe show the remote port as always 8888 as mine is 8883

Unfortunately advanced OS logging was not enabled and EsetPerf.etl was not generated in the Diagnostics folder. Please try again.

So I have attached again and taken screenshots to show that the Advanced OS part was enabled. However when the update was finished I went to turn both off to find the only one enabled was the advanced update log. I have also selected all as unsure why EsetPerf.etl - Does the log collector need to be run from inside the Eset program folder as I've just been running it from my download folder?

I should note this update was a lot quicker so not sure if the logs will be that helpful but you never know. There was also an error mentioned at the end of generating the log - had a look, something was too big to be included.

I've asked the developer of the updater to read your comment and neither him has an idea how ESET just downloading update files could slow down the whole system.

We would need you to enable in the advanced setup -> tools -> diagnostics:
    - advanced operating system logging
    - advanced update engine logging

Then run update and wait until it completes. Should it take too long, stop logging after 10-15 minutes. Next collect logs with ESET Log Collector, upload the generated archive to a safe location and drop me a private message with a download link.

I have the logs attached here. Ran them shortly after the update had began on widows startup. It did it's usual bit where it seemed to be trying to find the updates for a while but didn't take as long as sometimes - however as mentioned this varies, sometimes very quick, sometimes very slow. Very inconsistent. It started updating eventually but was stuck on 1 out of something (can't remember exactly what) e.g. 1/6.

As you mentioned, I let the logs generate for a bit. Currently it hasn't finished updating but just shows Updating.... with no progress shown e.g. no 3/6, no information about size (e.g. it was showing so much kb out of so much kb downloaded earlier at one stage).

So it wasn't as bad as last time but I've linked the log bellow - it's not too big but just over the limit for on here. There is a password which is just ESET (all capitals)

    https://easyupload.io/407a4p

EDIT - a few minutes, possibly 3-5 after stopping logging the update did fully finish.

After today Eset once again stuck to the update and even after 1 hour waiting nothing changed, I doubt the reliability of Eset now more than just! The last few months are just too many errors that Eset has had since several builds and therefore I doubt so slowly the reliability of this AV's

This sounds like the same issue I had, which I added to the posts on here

I had noticed the updates generally had been quicker as of lately, and didn't notice much system issue. However while this update occurred, the PC was very sluggish, with Google Chrome for example taking a while just to open, and browsing seemed very slow, like Eset was causing it to be slow. However I did download a test download from https://www.thinkbroadband.com/download, using the 512MB one which was a lot bigger than Eset's update. I was able to download that in about a 1-2 minutes while as Eset took well over half an hour and even crashed at the end and had to restart.

The thing is I can't remember any update issues before the updates where designed to use less resources. I don't know if this feature is any good because if anything it seems to be causing more resource issues/slowdowns, like everything is waiting for Eset to finish

You could try switching between release and pre-release update channel which will enforce download of all modules.

Would that be okay even on the beta version I'm on? Also not sure if related but because of the crash went to https://www.eicar.org/?page_id=3950 to test things where okay - the first download eicar.com 68 Bytes allows me to download it and only blocks/removes once downloaded while the others block me from downloading.
