I think there would be far more negative reactions to a complete UI change then not changing it. A malware program I use completely changed it's UI and created a fire storm on their forum, all negative for the most part. I'm all for UI improvements if it makes the product easier to use or functions better but not for a total change. I know where things are in ESS and can quickly do what I have to do without completely relearning how to use it. I guess my age is showing when I say I don't like change simply for the sake of change. It would seem to me that allowing users to make optional changes to the tray icon is asking for trouble. Obviously I'm not a software engineer but the tray icon has direct access to the program including the ability to disable it. I may be all wrong, not unusual for me, but it seems that a icon option would create a possible security issue. I like the module update approach ESET has taken, So much easier then downloading and reinstalling the entire program. Installed v8 over v7 on my Windows 7 sp1 x64 with no issues. Has anyone tried the new release on a XP machine?

You want GUI changes? Why? How much time do you spend looking at the ESET GUI? I hardly ever see the GUI unless there's a problem or I'm making changes to the firewall rules. It scans automatically, updates automatically, all silently, and notifies me if there are issues or updates. In my opinion ESET is making improvements where it counts. I don't want ESET engineers to waste their time on something as useless as a new and shiny GUI. I don't need a new hood ornament Protection is what I want and what I pay for and ESET provides that very well.

You do not have to exclude all the ekrn files, just those noted in Arakasi's post #14 That's all I have excluded and my Win 7 x64 is running smooth.

Starting with v2.x Malwarebytes no longer uses mbamgui.exe nor is the (') used in the directory name "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware" is now "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" in Win 7 x64 "C:\Program Files(86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" This is the latest exclusion list from the Malwarebytes forum: Source: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/150947-missing-mbam/ Post #2 by Firefox @Arakasi Thanks for this advice, I had the entire directory excluded never giving a thought to the possibility of the higher risk In looking for mbamgui.exe I found the above post at Malwarebytes. This made me go back at look at all my settings just to be sure I didn't make the same mistake in either program unfortunatly I did but all is corrected.... Again, thanks

Scheduled Scans

Same here I totally agree.... "Touch me touch me I wanna feel your body..." <-- Samantha Fox They could use that song in a commercial for a product that is all about the magic touch Do you mean "You've Got the Magic Touch" by The Platters? ..Probably not..I think my age is showing -

I totally agree. If Eset ever considers adding touch please include a "Touch: OFF" option. -

Product or products?

If you are not, as you say, "Tech Savvy" you should stop using Combofix. It is a tool that should be used under supervision of an experienced tech. -
I'm trying to figure out what the OP is talking about by saying he is being forced by Eset to use IE for Windows updates. I tried uninstalling IE as well, once. However, you can turn IE off. Source: hxxp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-turn-internet-explorer-off I had to do this when I had a problem with IE but didn't have the time to find it until later.

Automatic Updates
SCR replied to BrokenDobro's topic in ESET Internet Security & ESET Smart Security Premium
Eset is starting before the Internet connection is made, as it should be. I certainly don't want the connection made before my security application starts. A simple solution, at least to me - programming it is another story, would to be to allow the update to occur when a online connection is detected. This would be similar to the "Update when a dial up connection" is identified. If I use my Verizon modem through the Verizon connection manager Eset considers it a dial up connection but not when used through my router. Eset should be able to identify a Internet connection for update rather easily I would think. On Edit: I don't have a big issue with this as I expect it due to the way I connect to the Internet, but it's all the more reason to add "Check for Update" to the tray menu. -

This error occurs on my system as well. In my case it's because I am not always online and the auto update naturally fails. I connect through Verizon cell modem and may be on and off line several times per day. Once I'm online the next scheduled update works fine. -

For what it's worth, a two PC license for Eset is $10.00 more over the single PC license. hxxp://www.eset.com/us/store/smart-security/ -

Very nice. B) I couldn't help myself but to change the mhz part. @Bella If you only connect that XP PC online just every now and then, then it's probably best to pick a free AV that doesn't rely heavily on the cloud like some free AV's do today. Do you plan on using the AV in real-time or only for doing on-demand scans? OOPs! Duh! .. Thanks No biggie, and sorry for being picky. But it would sure be fantastic if one could use XP on a 1.7 mhz cpu. I used Win98 on a PC powered by a 300mhz cpu. Maybe I should start using it again it's around here somewhere, last I heard there is less attacks against Win98 than it is against XP. Just maybe because I spoke about my old XP I had a flash back to my first DOS 8086 computer with it's 40 MB HDD It ran at the blazing speed of 4.77 mhz < no error in the spec here. It was the first x86 processor. Sure had a lot of fun with it. Take a little trip down memory lane when you have the time: hxxp://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-cpu-history,1986.html As to "being picky" please feel free to save me from looking like an idiot anytime you wish to. -

I can't recommend a free AV but I am running Eset Smart Security on my old XP and Windows 7 machines. The XP system has 1 GB of RAM and a 1.7 MHz processor. I tried all the free AV's on it and it just brought the system to a halt. Eset SS runs just fine with little impact on the operations. A full scan takes a while but that is to be expected on a 12 year old system with low, very low, specs. My wife uses the XP for email and some Internet browsing. I'm trying to talk her in to getting a new computer but I'm not having much luck. She just doesn't like change, some of us old folks are like that. So I removed it from the LAN and keep a backup handy just in case. -
Computer Fan
SCR replied to Barkupatree2002's topic in ESET Internet Security & ESET Smart Security Premium
You could download and install a program to monitor your actual fan RPM and compare it to activity monitored by Task Manager. hxxp://www.hwinfo.com/ Be sure to download the correct version for your system, 32 or 64 bit. It will also report your temperatures. On Edit: My fan speeds are 1798 RPM on the case and 860 RPM on the CPU. All temperatures are in the upper 70's F. at idle. This is for a desktop and I am not familiar with laptops at all. -

I understand the new license or expansion of an existing license but still in most cases, obviously not all, your current credentials are used. As a distributor it makes sense that you would run in to this issue far more then the average user. With most software that I purchase the registration is somewhere on the program menus or on the "About" screen. Some are more prominent then others and most do not display once the product is registered. I have never had a problem finding where to enter the registration info. It just seems to me that with the limited tray menu space the "Activate your Product" item could be on the "About" screen. Maybe it could read "About/Activate" or something similar on the tray menu. Be well -

I agree update needs to be added. However, "Activate your Product" , regarding your "once you do it its done". What about renewals ? I've never had to activate a renewal. -

SCR replied to SCR's topic in ESET Internet Security & ESET Smart Security Premium
I restored my settings to where they were before and picked up another stick of RAM, problem solved. I wasn't comfortable not having things set the way I've been using Eset. Sooner or later it will get fixed.
