Earlier today i got a spam e-mail  from eliza fernandes NUCSOFT info here hxxp://sanesecurity.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/eliza-fernandes-nucsoft-payroll.html which contained malware, eset didn't detect this malware until i choose to move the e-mail into the spam folder it then detected it and deleted  the infected files VBA/TrojanDownloader.Agent.FI trojan   this was some 8hrs later

got me thinking is the e-mail scanner working as intended ?

You wrote you moved the email to another folder 8 hours later. That explains it - the detection was added in the mean time.
