Detecting malware in a timeachine backup volume

Sophos seems unable to scan the volume or the data set.

We scan the Timemachine backup volume, however, we recommend excluding it for performance reasons. Files on the disk should be already scanned for malware, especially if you schedule a full disk scan task to run on a regular basis.
