ESET is driving me nuts...

Recommended Posts

I've been a client of yours for for years now, never had a antivirus/firewall package so light weight on my system but the latest version is starting to make me rethink my opinion of it.

It seems that every new database update I get a connection problem.

For my work I use a program called Multicharts which receives realtime data from stock exchanges.

Since yesterday only half the data can be loaded, the other half just hangs there, waiting for connect.

When I disable ESET, Multicharts works fine, all data is loaded without a single problem

I created rules for every process that the program opens and I continue not to be able to load the data.

What are you guys doing with ESET? It's becoming very hard to work with it?

The other day a friend of mine couldn't access any site from Google and the problem was coming from ESET.

I know that an antivirus/firewall package is made to protect hour machines and it needs to be robust in detecting intrusions but at the moment ESET is becoming the problem, not the solution.

Regards

What does disabling ESET mean? ESET Smart Security consists of several modules that might interfere in certain configurations with uncommon applications: real-time protection, web & email protection (application filtering), HIPS, Firewall. We'll need to know which of these modules needs to be disabled so that the problem doesn't occur.

Multicharts is not common software that companies would use in pre-release testing. To be honest, I've heard about it for the first time. We'll be happy to assist you with resolving the issue but first we'll need you to narrow it down to a particular protection module.

As for problems with Google, we haven't heard of any and the only problems I can think of is when a user enables SSL scanning but the root certificate isn't imported to or honored by a web browser or email client.

In addition, unless you are an experienced security expert with a grasp knowledge of firewalls and ESET software combined, manually creating your rules is not a good idea because you can easily be leaving something out, or creating the rule incorrectly.

My suggestion would be to put the firewall in learning mode under the profile you plan to use, open your charts and let the firewall module create the rule required on its own, and any that you may have missed, close your chart program, switch back to interactive or automatic, and reopen your charts to see if the rules are now working.

I also have not heard of any issue with Google sites unless it was related to SSL, temporarily disable SSL checking and try the sites again.

As Marcos stated, try to isolate which part of the software is actually causing the issue, vs disabling all modules.

I disabled ESET using the option shown on the attached image below

Naturally you guys can't test every software under the sun so it's normal that you've never heard about it.

If I'm not mistaken I use ESET since version 5 and till now I never had a single problem between ESET and Multicharts.

I chose ESET because it was the only security package I tested that did not mess Multicharts connection and like I already said, very light on system resources.

Since version 7 came out, it has been an adventure.

There are days where all goes well and other which I'm forced to disable ESET for the entire day so I can receive data.

Multicharts support already connected to my computer several times to check if the problem is not related to Multicharts itself and it's always the same thing, they disable ESET and data gets collected once again.

The idea I have is that every day, when ESET update its database, something changes which makes Multicharts receive data properly or just part of it.

Unfortunately this is a problem I cannot have on my system.

If this is not resolved I'm forced to look elsewhere although I'm almost certain that this will be something common to all security packages.

Security starts to get higher and higher which starts to generate conflicts with other software which seems to be the case here.

Just switched to learning mode

Unfortunately, we still don't know which of the protection modules interferes with the software in question. What we'd need you to narrow it down to the particular module by disabling firewall, web protection and real-time protection, one at a time, and check if the problem occurs. Alternatively you can provide us with step-by-step instructions how to reproduce the issue and also provide us with information about the operating system and installed modules (available in the About window).
