Hi, given that Microsoft has announced End Of Life for support of Windows XP, in April, is there anything that Eset can or will do in this regard ?

Is there any part of the Security Updates that Microsoft have been doing which could be performed by an Eset product ?

Hi Clyde,

Security updates to Windows are released by Microsoft as part of regular Windows updates. There is no way for ESET to continue to offer this service because only Microsoft themselves can publish and distribute updates to their products.

ESET customers who use Windows XP will still receive full support from ESET as long as they have a valid license. This includes regular virus signature database and product updates for your ESET product. It is important to note that while your ESET product will still be fully supported, new exploits or vulnerabilities discovered in Windows XP might expose your system to threats because of the fact that Microsoft will no longer release updates to patch these types of issues.

Hello,

Just to add to CB530's excellent response, version 7 of ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security contain a couple of new technologies which can help further protect Microsoft Windows XP after it has exited its software maintenance cycle.

The first is called Vulnerability Shield. It is an extension of ESET's Personal Firewall technology, and is designed to protect computers against network-borne attacks based on MITRE's CVE and similar types of reports. This technology is only available in ESET Smart Security, though, as it is derived from the firewall module.

The first is called Exploit Blocker. It is an extension of ESET's HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System) and the easiest description I can think of for it is that it is form of heuristic and rule-based behavior blocking. This technology is available in both ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security, since it is derived from the HIPS module.

For additional information, see ESET Knowledgebase Article #3343, "What's new in ESET Smart Security 7 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7?".

Also, on a semi-related note, ESET continues to offer support for both Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Microsoft Windows 2000 in addition to Windows XP, and has not announced plans to discontinue support for any of them.

Aryeh Goretsky
