It's not just e-mail attachments. Any active content in a Word document can be employed.

Suggest you review in detail your Trust Center security settings in Word. Also pay close attention to trusted publisher and certificate settings since those are given special privileges due to the trust status.

I read a lot of nhs computers also run xp which doesn't help

Not just the NHS that's been hit with it but lots of government departments worldwide. But you would think in the modern world the basics of opening emails with attachments/links would be one of the first things employees would be taught NOT to do.

The allure of "Russian wifes" , "Free Ipads" , "$2000 casino bonuses" are just too tempting for people

Can you block it so email attatchments can't be opened. Was just thinking of how to avoid this as sadly people are the weakest link in security. Blocking email attachments and if you need to open one having it opened on an isolated network so if it is infected it can't spread

Thanks, Marcos. UK health system is presently also under major attack from this ransomware.

I do find it a bit hard that this ransomware is spreading worldwide due to because all these concerns failed to apply the March SMB patch.

I read somewhere that someone in the NHS got an email from an unknown sender telling them they had been infected with ransomware and to open an attachment for more info/to pay etc. Obviously this was the real virus. Thought the nhs would have a strong training course for social engineering

  4. A website I regularly visit is being partly blocked by Eset. I reported it to the website in question and was given a link on how to unblock it with Eset. I told the website they should contact Eset as there is probably a reason that the site is being blocked and it would be better to have this fixed for all users. Also there is probably a reason for Eset blocking the site and for that reason I won't put it into my exceptions - even if it is a false positive if the site did get infected in the future I'd be at risk.

The website is www.doctorwhotv.co.uk. When entering the site, the site is viewable but an alert comes up "hxxp://community.doctorwhotv.co.uk/javascripts/count.js;Blocked by internal IP blacklist." Most of the site is viewable but the community page is blocked completely with the following message "Website blocked The web page is on the list of websites with potentially dangerous content. Access to it has been blocked."

What is the reason for this? The site seems to have stopped emailing me. I'd usually think that was suspicious but it is well used popular site. Just wondering what they should do to avoid this.

    Thanks

Thank you. But I still don't understand. I keep hitting BLOCK but it just pops up again and again. I don't recognize the site and I am at a lost as to how to get it to stop popping up. Any sugs ? TY, Gene

Have you ticked remember action for this certificate. In the image the ask everytime bit is selected so blocking it will only block it for that instance and you will be asked again each time,

Unfortunately it seems that there is no way to help me from the support of Latin America, I will acquire another license of the program.

I would just like to know what data must be provided to me once the purchase has been made and how can I verify that the registration data matches those of ESET?

If you buy it from the site above everything should be okay as it's the proper mexican site. You'll get an account and licence

  7. I was just wondering, apart from the extras like the password manager and anti-theft and so on, is there anything different in each Eset version?

The reason I'm asking this is I have noticed lately in the forums a lot of people accidentally downloading the wrong version for their license e.g. downloading smart security premium rather than internet security. They then have to uninstall/download and instal the correct version.

This got me thinking. Rather than having separate versions would it be technically possible to have one version? The idea is that certain parts would be locked without the correct license. This would mean that if someone wanted to upgrade they wouldn't need a new version and would simply put in their new license to unlock the previously locked features. This would also mean if someone wanted to downgrade they wouldn't have to uninstal, they would just put in their newer lower license and have the higher up features locked again.

Obviously this might be more complicated than it sounds but thought I'd suggest it. The only problem I can see user wise is having the tools on their computer taking up space but unable to use them. This could possibly be solved by having the tools like modules and not actually stored on the computer. Basically when the higher up version is unlocked these tools could then be downloaded via the program automatically.

Again this could be more complicated than it sounds but it would mean Eset would only need one version, one download etc.

    Thanks

I have recently upgraded to Eset Smart Security Premium and this post relates to Password Manager.

When I turn the p.c. 'on' in the morning, I enter the Password Manager 'Master Password'.

All goes well and, after using the p.c., I decide to put it to sleep, while I carry on with other matters in the house.

Then my wife wants to use the p.c. She has to enter the Master Password until she has finished using the p.c. and puts it back in sleep mode.

30 minutes later I want to go back to the p.c., 'wake' the p.c. and I have to re-enter the Master Password.

I would not leave the p.c. in sleep mode whilst being away from the house for obvious security reasons, however, whilst I am in and around the house/garden, I would like to have the facility to put the p,.c. to sleep whilst leaving the password manager still 'logged in'.

I have looked at Settings and other Password Manager Forum entries but cannot find how to do what I am trying to achieve.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

In settings you can tell the program how long to stay unlocked for or if to stay unlocked for good each session (not recommended). However I think sleep mode is different and it may simply lock itself each time.

  9. Description: The ability to change quick links
Detail: Not sure if I've mentioned this on here but it would be really handy if you could change the quicklinks that you see when you right click the eset icon in the taskbar.

For example some people will never use the gamemode but for people who game a lot being able to add that option to the quick link would make it far easier to turn on/off. Same with other options.

I just upgraded from ESS 10.0.304.0 to 10.1.204.0, and I noticed when I went to check my antitheft settings, they were missing. I can not find any reference to anti-theft anywhere in the program anymore. the only reason I have not switched over to EIS is because of the anti-theft in ESS. I got ESS because of the anti-theft feature. why is it no longer in the program?

Do you mean 10.1.204.0 smart security. I'm sure I read smart security still includes anti theft but it's not available for new users. It could be a bug if your still on smart security not sure though.

  11. Stumbled on an article about a new email service that has claimed to be the most secure email service. Seems it's actually the opposite.

It's an expensive device yet when a security researcher took it apart they discovered it was simply a cheap rasperry pi device with lots of out of date software and no apparent update system. Apparently the creators claim it uses its own proprietary system but the researcher found nothing like this.

Theres a full rundown of everything the researcher found online. Its quite an interesting read

Disabling SSL/TLS filtering doesn't make a difference. I could not find the setting for changing to pre-release updates, despite using search... where exactly is it?

Go into setup - advanced setup - click the update area on the left hand side near the top - should be just under antivirus. Click the + by profiles and the + by basic. You should see a bit with update type and a drop down menu. The pre release option is in there. Press okay and it should be sorted. Then go into the main update area and run an update.

  13. I use two factor authentication for a few things but I do have an issue with it.

Back when lot's of people's icloud's got hacked, apple started rolling it out, but Apple never actually stated they were hacked which makes me believe a lot of the incidents where forms of phishing. I've read about phishing using two factor authentication which generally involves a hacker pretending to be from the site/company etc. Basically they inform the user that there's an issue but can't access the account until it's been disabled or they send them the code. Also if I remember correctly one phone network had issues with it's voicemails being hacked a while back.

Don't get me wrong two factor authentication is great but it should never fully replace teaching people how to be secure.

  14. As someone who likes to keep an eye on the tech and security world I just came across something I'd never heard of thanks to a bug fix via Chrome. I thought I'd share this as I found it quite interesting.

Homograph Attacks basically uses foreign languages that use characters that are similar to english characters, such as Cyrillic characters. The idea is that the domain will appear to be genuine while taking you to a completely different website. Chrome has just released a fix to prevent this issue that has been ongoing apparently for years. I think it does show the importance of using up to date software. Strangely never heard of this until today.

I have a question about ESET Smart Security (non-premium edition).

I noticed on your website that when viewing all products for Windows that ESET Smart Security seems to be excluded, and is hidden away in your website.

    https://www.eset.com/us/home/for-windows/

Is it being deprecated in favor of ESET Internet Security or ESET Smart Security Premium?

Just curious as to whether I should be transferring my license over to ESET Internet Security and using that.

    Cheers
    Matt

With the new products Eset got rid of Smart Security for new customers. However current customers can still renew their licenses.

With the new products internet security is the basic one and doesn't include anti theft. Smart security premium includes anti theft alongside a password manager and a secure data tool. However Smart Security still includes the anti theft feature so if you don't need the password manager and secure data tool it's better to upgrade to smart security unless you don't need the anti theft part.

Well, I for one feel that ESET's products are too expensive, considering that they haven't even made it into the top 3 most effective AVs in at least 4 years or more.

ESET products used to be ideal for anyone looking for the best AV with the smallest system footprint; Anymore, ESET bogs down a Windows system just as bad as AVG or any of the others. Not too noticeable on today's =>4 core CPU/multi-GB RAM machines, but still an unfortunate fact nonetheless.

On top of that, the interface just blows anymore. I use V5 and refuse to upgrade beyond it, as it's the last version with an interface that's not like a puzzle or maze to use.

I've also managed to modify the upgrade executable code so that it no longer loads upon request. :-) I won't share my methodology here, as ESET obviously doesn't want that given out.

But I do want to put my 2 cents in about the interface that's gotten incrementally more annoying ever since it first replaced the original, non-user friendly interface from v2. Add to that the fact that NOD32 no longer wins any contest for anything at all and you've lost a formerly paying customer.

I'm hopeful about the Feb 23 post here regarding ESET considering an upgrade nag disable option. If that happens, I'll consider renewing my subscription.

I think people forget how far sadly cybercriminals have came. As newer threats come eset has to adapt or be left behind. Eset's older versions may seem to use less resources yet they didn't have to deal with as much either. Also I thought Version 9 was when the main big UI came. As far as I remember up until then the changes in the UI where small and basically each new version tended to look the same. I can understand why people prefered that look especially if you are used to it but a lot of newer users look for sleeker more modern designs.
