ESET VPN and problems with using it either on Windows or in IOS with various assistive technology products

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I'm matthew, and am fellow user of your fine products for PC'S and other hardware.

Encouraged by your advertisement of your products, I decided to test the ESET Business Security Pack, as in Poland, which is my country of residence, there is no ESET Security Ultimate at this moment. So, the most interesting feature that I have chosen to test is the ESET VPN. I would like to admit that I'm a digital accessibility specialist, and my task is to resolve many barriers in this area.
Unfortunately, despite my big affection to your good quality products, which are not so expensive, the ESET VPN, which is contained in the ESET Small Business Security Pack, does not work with any screenreader, neither on Windows: JAWS, NVDA, ZDSR, Narrator, nor on IOS ( VoiceOver). I must confess that this is a big pity for me, because I wanted to test one of the richest packages before purchase. For example, after running the ESET VPN client on Windows, nothing is read. Insteat of this, the Windows app completely freezes. A pretty same thing goes on IOS. After activating the app with typed in code, the app menu is almost inaccessible.
Have you any plans to update your VPN products with accessible menus, so I could go back and test it again with my good review?

Unfortunately the maker of VPN does not plan to add support for screen readers. If you have purchased ESET Security Ultimate just recently, you could ask for a refund and purchase ESET Security Premium instead. If you know of a VPN that supports screen readers, you could purchase it separately.

Hello
To be honest, I don't care if a windscribe limited company which makes this service do not plan to implement any solution to make these programs accessible or not, simply they must do that, because Slovakia and Poland are in the EU, and the EU law is first. And, if you pay other companies to have a consent of implementing their solutions in your products, you must realize that this product is not working properly with assistive technologies, if you are advanced developers and engineers of the program, which interferes so advanced into our operating systems. I promise that i am not going to leave this problem without the answer. I'd like to be heared in the Jonathan Mosen's living blindfully podcast, which describes very widely any problems with inaccessibility. One of his topic will be telling to a wider audience that one of your features is completely inaccessible.

Also, when you're going to release trial versions of eset security ultimate and ESET small business security to a whole world? Is there any possibility to test the ESET Security ultimate as a trial version in the US when there is no such possibility in Poland?

As far as EU's EAA: https://www.forbes.com/councils/forbesbusinesscouncil/2022/05/11/the-european-accessibility-act-everything-you-need-to-know/ goes, required implementation is;

ensure the implementation of the accessibility measures contained in the EAA by June 28, 2025.

It's ambiguous if it applies to all application software per se with the below only referenced;

• Websites/e-commerce

• Computers and operating systems

O, great. So, what do you think, when this hotfix will be available? When we can expect it? Will you answer to this topic if this hotfix will be available?

I fully understand that currently there's no ETA, but, will You try to answer to this topic when this fix will be available to us?

By the way, does the temporarily turn off the HIPS mechanism in ESET or adding the VPN / all the executable files to the hips rules / ESET exclusions will help?

Since Eset Ultimate uses WindscribeVPN, I asked "Gary" Windscribe's support forum AI bot if Windscribe supports screen reader's. Here's his reply;

Windscribe apps are designed to be as user-friendly as possible, but screen reader compatibility may vary depending on the platform. For Windows and MacOS, you can try using the native screen reader tools like Narrator or VoiceOver. If you're having trouble, let me know which platform you're on, and I can guide you further.

Have you tried using either of these screen readers? If not or to continue the dialog with "Gary," use the above posted link.

Yes, of course! I don't remember your nickname, but, please, don't trust bots, they only are artificial intelligence humanoids which don't know in any way how to use it. Again, don't tell these kind of thinks to the public, as these kind of info can be so misleading to users who do not know screenreading problems at all. This problem has been addressed for further research, so we hope that it will be resolved soon. I hope also that one of the main eset's technicians will give us answer to this topic.

Ok, I see. I can improve your implementation for ESET VPN by participating in testing. If you need a tester before your implementation release, you can feel free to contact me.
