How to tell if eset internet security is blocking my emails from being sent when receiving "Send Message Error" using Thunderbird email client.

Recommended Posts

When trying to send emails, very often it takes numerous attempts, due to the following error message: "Sending of the message failed.,The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.mail.wowway.com timed out. Try again."

I have talked with my email provider, Wide Open West, but so far they have not been helpful, other than verifying that I have the correct port settings. They also sent some test emails which they probably think are working fine, but that is not true when I try to send from my email client, Thurderbird.

Certain web sites say something to check regarding this error message is the firewall or antivirus.  Windows Defender says that setting is handled by eset.  How or where can I check in eset internet security whether there is an issue that causes my emails to get the above error message?

ESET doesn't scan SMTP communication. You can try disabling protocol filtering in the advanced setup, however. If that doesn't make any difference, temporarily uninstall ESET to rule out ESET completely.

Thank you for that information.  Regarding "You can try disabling protocol filtering in the advanced setup.." can you point me in the right direction regarding what screen or option or setting I can navigate to so as to access that setting?   I see advanced set up icon in lower right screen when opening up eset internet security, and  clicking there I see an option that says  Email client protection (which is enabled), and when clicking on that gear I see Email to Scan and one of the options is sent mail (which is checked.)  Is that what you are referring to, or something different?

Further to  my message above, I found where to disable protocol filtering.  However that did not clear up the problem.  As suggested I could uninstall eset to rule out it is causing the problem.  Although I hate to be without protection, although maybe if I don't engage in any activity while uninstalled that may be ok.  Would running my system in safe mode be another way to see if eset is causing the email problem?

No because in safe more most of applications won't run so it wouldn't help you find the culprit.
