If you experience many power outages where you live, and while it's highly recommended to use a UPS in such case if possible, one thing that might help a bit is to disable write-caching on your drive(s) (if applicable). You can do some from Device Manager > Disk Drives > Select your drive > Policies tab > Untick "Enable write caching on the device" checkbox > OK (a restart might be required), this will cause a small performance hit but generally it's negligible, so weigh your options. Hope this helps.

Off-topic but I think it's worth mentioning, from my past experience with Kaspersky forums, I believe if a topic similar to this (e.g. I just switched to ESET Smart Security) was posted on Kaspersky forum, it would've been closed and probably deleted in matter of seconds. Kudos to ESET staff for letting this discussion happen, freely, on their own forums. @Tweak Arena, I'm glad you're finally satisfied now.

I believe the current color codes are as the following: HIPS - Orange PUA/PUP/PSA*(?) - Orange Threat - Red FW Outbound - Green FW Inbound - Red (unless the connection is from the Trusted Zone, then it's green as well) New Network Detection - Blue I think the orange color is fit for the PUA/PUP but for HIPS some new color might be needed, blue can be used because AFAIK it's only used by the firewall when a new network is detected and that's a completely different looking dialog, but again any other color can be used, blue was just an example.
  4. Description: Different color for the header of HIPS (Interactive Mode) dialog windows. Detail: The warning for PUA/PUP is almost identical to that of the HIPS dialog window, making it somewhat tricky to notice the PUA/PUP detections especially when installing/reinstalling programs where the user usually receives many HIPS prompts (if it's set to interactive mode), and this can affect the more careful user. Changing the color of the HIPS prompts to a different color can make it much easier to distinguish between the two different dialogs.   5. Does it hang at 17% every time or it just hangs at different points randomly? What file was being scanned when it hanged? Can you spot a pattern where the scan hangs on a specific file, file size, file-type, etc?
  6. Try: Retrieve License Details or just contact ESET Customer Care. Generally, this can be resolved easily especially if you have a proof of purchase. Good luck.
  7. Try clearing the update cache: Open ESS GUI > Press F5 to open Advanced setup > Update > Update > Clear update cache, then try updating again. Hope this helps.

SweX, It's always better to prevent tracking cookies than to delete them repetitively, from my experience with it EasyPrivacy which is now merged with Fanboy's list does a good job handling tracking cookies (See: Tracking the Trackers - Stanford), it will make them hate you and probably never visit you again. Now when I scan with HitmanPro it can't find a single tracking cookie to delete, while in the past it used to find dozens of them. Cheers
  9. Well, here a short list of possible reasons why I think people stick to older versions of programs (in general): 1. They don't know that there is a newer version. 2. They run a mission-critical system(s) and don't want to take chances breaking things. 3. They tried the new version already and caused them trouble and don't want bother troubleshooting, reporting...etc. or maybe they don't like the changes. 4. They have heavily customized and configured the program, and don't want to export then import settings across major versions, and also don't want to spend time reconfiguring. 5. They dislike change and stick with what they're more familiar with. 5. They don't like the new interface And I can go on and on listing possible reasons. Sometimes there are good reasons and sometimes not. PS. Why not all people are upgrading to Windows 8 although it was offered for a dirt cheap price? Or even, why some people are still sticking to their Windows XP?
  10. SpywareBlaster doesn't need to remain running in the background to enable protection, and thus, should not conflict with ESS real-time protection (hopefully), and that also means that there will be no extra processes consuming your system resources. You welcome.
  11. I've never used Super AntiSpyware, so can comment on it. SpywareBlaster is a good option and will take care of tracking cookies among other things. Also, If you use AdBlock Plus, you can subscribe to EasyPrivacy list. As for other good on-demand scanners, you can't go wrong with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, it's also free with an option to upgrade to Pro at a cost, just like HitmanPro but the free ones do a wonderful job at no cost.
  12. Nope. However, you can set your browser to clear the cookies on exit if you wish, or block third-party cookies completely, but this may cause some websites to not function properly. Or you can use CCleaner or a similar program to do the job. You may also consider using HitmanPro which can clear just the tracking cookies while leaving the "normal" cookies intact, it's free, portable, and can also be used as an on-demand scanner if you ever wanted a second opinion.

Description: Exclusion list for Gamer Mode Detail: Exclusion list for Gamer Mode where the user can exclude certain programs from the automatic gamer mode feature without having to disable it all together and fall back to that manual way, this can be very useful if you run certain application(s) but as an exception you still want to be notified about any events, and carry on with scheduled tasks, etc. for any reason.   15. The scan time depends on several things (including but not limited to): 1. Selected parameters in ThreatSense setup for the In-depth profile in this case. 2. Scan targets you selected. 3. Amount and type(s) of files on your drives. 4. You hardware specs. 5. What you do on the system while the scan is in progress.
  16. There should be a copy of that file in NOD32 Quarantine, if so, right-click on it and click Submit for analysis. You probably should send it to VirusTotal as well.

After your computer is started, open Task Manager (taskmgr.exe) and you should normally see two processes that belong to ESET, egui.exe and ekrn.exe, check and report on which of the two that's not there on the list. If ekrn.exe is there then it's the interface that's not loading automatically, open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and make sure you have the following entry in the following registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run > Name: "egui" Value: "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Smart Security\egui.exe" /hide /waitservice", if it doesn't exist then create it: Right-click > New > String Value, and use the info from above for the name and value. If ekrn.exe or both processes are not there, then go to Windows Services, open the start menu and type: services.msc, then look for a ESET Service, double-click it, in the general ensure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic, and the Service Status reads Started, if it's not click on Start button right beneath it to get started.

  21. Very Important: Create a restore point before you attempt at solving this issue with the instructions below. Solution 1: 1. Boot your computer into Safe Mode. 2. Open the Registry Editor, open start menu then type regedit and hit enter. 3. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ESET\ESET Security\CurrentVersion\Plugins\01000103\Profiles\@My profile 4. You'll find two DWORDS there named 'Enable' and 'Register', change their values from 1 to 0, this will disable Document Protection. 3. Restart into Normal Mode. See if you can login normally now. If that didn't help, reverse all the steps from above, then try this: Solution 2: 1. Boot your computer into Safe Mode. 2. Rename 'ekrnDmon.dll' located in ESET installation folder, typically: 'C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Smart Security' 3. Restart into Normal Mode See if you can login normally now. If that didn't help, reverse all the steps from above, and post back. Hope this helps.
  22. Did you try to click on the "Use recommended settings" button? If so, what happens? BTW, Windows Defender and ESS work fine together IIRC, but you're better off turning Windows Defender off, you'll save some CPU cycles, and avoid the rare-if-ever possibility of conflict between the two.

  24. AFAIK, ESS will be completely disabled in Safe Mode, I might be wrong though. The best way to isolate this issue is to perform a clean Windows installation on a different partition and dual-boot, then test your network and internet there before and after installing ESS, this may take about an hour or less to do but it will give you peace of mind instead of wasting hours testing small different things.
