  1. Valid arguments indeed. However ESET is a reputable company and it's sad that you have to meet it this way.

But the goal of ESET and Facebook is also understandable. There are many malicious links shared on Facebook and they wanted to fight against them.

“Our goal is to offer our users the right technology to improve their experience of our services and better protect their devices. ESET Online Scanner for Facebook will significantly decrease the number of malicious links from among the trillions of clicks that take place every day on Facebook,” said Chetan Gowda, Software engineer at Facebook.

    hxxp://www.eset.com/int/about/press/articles/products/article/eset-joins-facebook-to-offer-free-security-service-for-all-users/

And to do this Facebook also partnered with two other security companies. (Aren't they offered for scanning too?) And BTW of this all I would be more concerned about your device or Facebook account.

As it's told in the same article "Facebook checks for signs of any suspicious behavior – like sending spam messages or infected links to people’s friends".

So basically you can of course use any antivirus software to scan your PC (or the ESET online scanner here - okay there shouldn't be any major difference to the ESET online scanner on Facebook). Additionally I would suggest you to change your password.

  2. Okay so the fact that the settings are not saved correctly is of course unwanted.

As for all files there are not really any differences, in "settings after starting program with admin rights.xml" there is piratically nothing changed and in "settings after starting program with admin rights (2).xml" a bit more is added.

But of course we need to know what settings you intended to change. (You can of course test some setting and so on...)

So does it only happen to "settings > computer > on-demand computer scan > threatsense setup > objects"? BTW there you of course also have multiple profiles so does it happen with every profile?

And what happens if you for instance create new profile there with some customized settings?

And BTW can you import settings successfully? (For example try it with these ones: Block OpenCandy :D)

  3. This thread was nearly a year old. So if you're really still experiencing this issue then I would had reported this earlier.

I installed a trial about 10 days ago; worked ok but indeed reboots cause the icon to appear yes or no

So what? Yes or no? Is it working or not? You have to tell me that - my crystal ball actually has some issues... :)

So just in case it's not working, check if you're using the latest version and follow this guide.

Recently we didn't had any issues with disappearing tray icons AFAIK.

It's not ESET who is forcing you. It's Facebook. They only use ESETs engine and want to prevent malware from spreading. This is the reason why your Facebook profile was locked.

And BTW you only have to use the Online scanner. You're not required to download an ESET trail or something like this. (However the online scanner may - if it's not used with Internet Explorer - require you to download a small "installer" that's right)

More information and instructions here: Why does Facebook require that I scan my computer with ESET?

However the fact that another person can login to Facebook without this message on the same device is quite strange. (Or maybe were there posted malicious links with your profile?)

But anyway - what was the result of the scan?

    @all

For what it's worth also another information about this topic generally: Because of this integration in Facebook ESET discontinued the ESET Social Media Scanner for Facebook. You can read this e.g. here at question 9 or here.

So actually the Social Media Scanner is only available for Twitter anymore.

Edit: According to foneil you can skip the online scanning process. But in the KB article I linked it states the following as an issue:

    • Facebook has locked access to your account until you perform a scan
  5. So maybe your real issue is that your settings aren't saved correctly?

(And of course if they aren't saved correctly then they can't be exported correctly...)

So what OS and ESS version are you using and were you using the same for importing and exporting or did you exported the configuration of an older version and imported?

And additionally it would be nice if you could explain which .xml you exported at what time and with which product version if they were different.

As I see the new.xml is quite like default settings, expect of the "<SCANNER ID="0">" part which includes some basically scanner settings.

old.xml seems to be configured much more, so why don't just import old.xml?

But back to the settings saving issue: Can you reproduce this so happens it every time you save settings or if not under what circumstances does it happen?

Additionally can you save the settings correctly if you restart ESS with admin rights?

  6. FYI I've just tried to access the Cybersecurity Education (like it's now named) again and it worked although I haven't used a American or Caribbean IP.

So obviously ESET removed the IP block of the page. And that's great! :)

So have fun and save netropolis! :D

(With the release of v8 of the ESET products netropolis is also new, because ESET Cybersecurity Education is more like a game now.)

  7. Why is defender active again, i cant disable it from services as it is grayed out.... that is weird.

As for defender don't try to deactivate it by disabling the task. Use the settings of Windows defender instead (disable real-time protection) or use the ones offered via the action center. (there you can display a list of all installed AVs with buttons to disable/enable them).

  8. How do you know it's communicating with ESET LiveGrid. Is there always displayed this small message "Communication with ESET LiveGrid"?

To stop the scan you disable the scheduled task of course and then restart your device.

But however if EMS still displays that the scan is running (in the notification area for example) then you should also be able to stop the scan.

You can pause it with the green button and stop/cancel it with the 'X' at the right top.

  9. That makes ESET popup window asking to allow Battle.net Update Agent (and game specific executables) to connect to internet just everytime, they update them.

Even if the file would stick in the same directory and would just be replaced you would get a notification from ESS everytime the file was changed. This happens because otherwise malware could just replace a file of which it believes that it has an allow firewall rule and would be able to communicate without permission.

  10. @itman

I think you misunderstood something there. AFAIK The ESET root certificate isn't protected at all. It can be changed by any software on the computer - like all other root certificates too.

If there is really everything clean in SysInspector this would be great. However in nearly every SysInspector log I have seen are at least some files unknown.

Su just FYI you can filter the SysInspector logs with a slider.

  11. @bbahes
No the article you linked has nothing to with the case we're talking here.

Here we are talking about ESETs SSL scanning which means ESS imports a root certificate into trusted root certification stores (Windows and Firefox e.g.)

    @itman

    You're issue really looks suspicious.

Someone or something seems to replace root certificates and made screenshots. AFAIK ESS doesn't update the root certificate by itself so if it was really replaced this could be done by malware.

You could also try to look at the running processes and look whether there are some recognized by LiveGrid with a state which is not green.

Similar you could do this with ESET SysInspector.
