  1. If this can help...

I have reset all ESET settings to their default value. In that case, Dropbox works as expected but the default is "Do not scan SSL protocol" in which case HTTPS protocol scanning is also disabled (grayed). As soon as I select "Always scan SSL protocol" (which immediately enables "Use HTTPS protocol checking for selected ports (443)" ), Dropbox stops syncing and "Can't establish a secure connection".

The update system tells me that ESET is up-to-date.

  2. there should be no problem with Dropbox when SSL scanning is enabled if your Internet protection module is current.

    So your settings are :

    - Protocol filtering | Enable application protocol content filtering => ON

    - SSL | Always scan SSL protocol => ON

    - Enable HTTP checking => ON

    - HTTPS filtering mode => Use HTTPS protocol checking for selected ports (443)

    ?

  3. Please post the information about installed modules (from the About window) as there should be no problem with Dropbox when SSL scanning is enabled if your Internet protection module is current.

    Here it is :

    Virus signature database: 9548 (20140316)

    Rapid Response module: 3824 (20140316)

    Update module: 1047 (20131023)

Antivirus and antispyware scanner module: 1421 (20140219)

    Advanced heuristics module: 1147 (20140114)

    Archive support module: 1192 (20140227)

    Cleaner module: 1084 (20140224)

    Anti-Stealth support module: 1057 (20131125)

    ESET SysInspector module: 1240 (20131202)

    Real-time file system protection module: 1006 (20110921)

    Translation support module: 1145 (20131121)

    HIPS support module: 1120 (20140305)

    Internet protection module: 1109 (20140226)

    Database module: 1054 (20140218)

    Thanks.

  4. Then what's the purpose of SSL protocol scanning? Doesn't the second option disable the functionality of first?

Indeed, the documentation is rather unclear about that. My guess is that "Do not use HTTPS protocol checking" will only disable HTTP over SSL (HTTPS) but not SSL protocol checking when SSL is used by any other protocol. However, in the case of Dropbox, the Dropbox synchronization program is not suposed to use HTTP to do its job. So it's a little confusing, to say the least.

  5. if I select "Always scan SSL protocol", the Dropbox tray icon applet says nothing but syncing never starts.

    To be more accurate:

If I copy a couple of files to a Dropbox folder in Windows Explorer, Dropbox detects that there are files to upload to the Dropbox server and the tray icon applet says "Uploading xx files..." . But the upload never starts.

Likewise, if new files are added to the server, the tray icon applet never "sees" them and no syncing occurs.

  6. Hi Marcos,

In the SSL protocol filtering section, if I select "Always scan SSL protocol", the Dropbox tray icon applet says nothing but syncing never starts. If I select "Ask about non-visited sites" and acknowledge each certificate as described in the page mentioned above, Dropbox says "Unable to make a secure connection". I have also excluded dropbox.exe in Protocol Filtering | Excluded applications. This didn't help.

The only way to have Dropbox syncing is to select "Do not scan SSL protocol".

    Thanks.

  7.

Filling the environment variables memory with space-filled variable isn't much of a good idea...

Agreed. Especially when no information is given about something that immediately appears as a bug to any user. This should be mentioned somewhere in the help file or in a FAQ. I guess ESET will answer that giving information about a part of their defence strategy would also not be that wise but usually, such things are invisible to the user and do not interfere with other apps.

Anyway, not giving information about this feature costed some of us a lot of time. I returned to ESET NOD32 just a few weeks ago but as a developer, I used it in my professional environment until I retired in 2010. At that time, it was much more quiet than now which was the reason for which it replaced the Norton AV on my system. Now I'm not sure about what trouble this strange environment variable will possibly generate and I also have the Outlook integration that generates duplicate emails.

  8. Hi everybody,

    FYI

According to an ESET representative, the ESET_OPTIONS environment variable is not a bug :

it is not a buggy option, it's there on purpose and by removing it you deactivated one of the new protection enhancements. We were able to reproduce the issue in our environment and analyze it. Eventually it turned out to be a bug in iTunes which causes the issue. We have a workaround for the iTunes bug prepared for testing.

  10. Never mind. This was a bug in iTunes. I guess that an iTunes update has been installed at the same time I installed ESET. Just a coincidence, obviously.

    Sorry for the trouble.

I apologized too fast. ESET NOD32 is the culprit. It installed a very strange environment variable (ESET_OPTIONS) which value is a huge string of spaces. This is causing trouble to iTunes when syncing with Outlook. Removing this environment variable fixes the problem.

  11. Hi,

I also had this strange environment variable created after installing ESET NOD32. There's nothing that can justify something that odd anyway. Must be a bug in the installer. But I also have problems when syncing Outlook with my iPod. Removing the variable didn't help but I didn't reboot since then. Let's try...

  12. Does disabling ESET integration with MS Outlook or protocol filtering in the advanced setup make a difference?

No. Integration with Outlook is already disabled because it generates email duplicates. I have tried to disable protocol filtering for Outlook only. Didn't help. Then I disabled it globally as well as System Integration. Didn't help either.

Does disabling ESET integration with MS Outlook or protocol filtering in the advanced setup make a difference? What version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus and modules (see the About window) do you have installed?

  13. Integration (plug-in) is required for the spam filter to work. Also it allows you to scan incoming and outgoing email regardless of the protocol used and also to re-scan received messages. One more thing you could try - disable scanning of read emails.

OK. Not a big deal since I already have spam filtering implemented on my IMAP server. Any chance to have this problem fixed ?
