  1. I have manually updated one of my machines to ESET Smart Security Premium v11.1.42.0.  On installation the option to select the language is offered. English is identified with a US flag and (as a UK resident) I find this annoying and insulting; Spanish isn't shown with a Mexican flag or Portuguese with a Brazilian flag.  Please respect the identity and origins of the English language and use the UK Union flag.

  2. itman, I appreciate your replies.  However, my router isn't on that list so the warning generated is meaningless. If ESET SS provides a warning it must:

    • Be relevant to what has been scanned i.e. in this case, the router model.
    • Provide an amplifying link (or similar) that expands on what the message means if not immediately obvious.

For me, the bottom line is that I ran the scan and it reported a warning not relevant to my router and a statement of the obvious: my router runs common network services, precisely as I would expect it to.

That is in reference to this: https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/31617/

There are a few postings on the NetGear forum about this Eset alert without any posted acknowledgement by Netgear of the issue. When was the last time your router's firmware was updated?

Many thanks for that but specific to a very old router.  As I stated, I'm using the Netgear Orbi and the firmware was updated about 3 weeks ago.

  4. I have no reason to suspect there's anything wrong with my router or Home Network but thought I'd run the 'Scan Router' feature (Tools | Home Network Protection | Scan Router) to see what was reported.  I use the Netgear Orbi with one satellite that gives me excellent WiFi coverage.  The scan reported two vulnerabilities:

    • Update your router's firmware.  Vulnerability Name: EDB-31617.A.  Vulnerability Type: Bad access rights.
    • Network services.  Your router runs common network services.  These are needed by the network and probably safe.

What on earth do these reports mean or add?  The firmware is the most up to date so what does 'Bad Access Rights' actually mean?  (Yes, I have changed the default username and password to access the router's configuration).  A report is only useful if it can be understood and acted upon.

The second report regarding Network Services.  My router runs common network services!!  Go figure; it's a router that assigns IP addresses across my network and routes traffic; I would expect it to use common network services but without any expansion of what this phrase actually means it's worthless.

  5. The issue with version numbering on the website has been reported to the UK department who is responsible for their local website.

As for the built-in program update function, it works for me and shows v9.0.375 as the most current which is in fact the latest one available as a uPCU (micro program component update). There will always be some gap between the release of installers and the time when that version becomes available as a uPCU.

Well, the UK 'department' either didn't receive the e-mail, don't care or are incompetent because as of 2 minutes before writing this the version shown is still v9.0.375.

  6. MarcoO

Please read what I have previously written. The primary reason I have moved away from ESET on my desktop is nothing to do with updates. Oh, and by the way, I am free to chop and change as I please. Kaspersky is working fine right now though for a while I simply went back to ESET SS v8 as the nagging alerts are controllable. If ESET v10 returns control reasonabley quickly to, at least, advanced users then I will probably return to ESET as I've been using it since v3.

As I have linked to several times in this thread, I am well aware v9.0.377 is available on other sites, but guess what; it still isn't shown on the .co.uk site. If you maintain different sites for different nationalities then please maintain them correctly so that customers can keep abreast of what is going on with new versions.

  7. Marcos,

    This is getting ridiculous.

When you select the fact that you're from the UK you're are directed to www.eset.co.uk.  On this site the version listed is 9.0.375 (See HERE).  If you download the file it is v9.0.376 and yet on the US site (.com), version 9.0.377 is shown as available.

On the download page there is indeed a version number shown and on the UK site (the home of the English language) it is shown as v9.0.375.

The 'Check for Update' facility doesn't work - and never has (there are many posts in the forums on precisely this).  When I clicked on 'Check for Updates' on my laptop with v9.0.375 installed, it stated that no updates were available.  And yet v9.0.377 was available.

Depending on whether v10 is released before my licence expires will determine whether I even look at it.  I have moved to Kaspersky on my desktop.

  8. I'm aware that it's available on the '.com' site.  The point is that when you first log-on to the ESET site (before a cookie is stored) you are asked for your country to take you to the site specifically for that country (don't get me started on the fact that the 'English' language is shown with a US flag!!!).

For the ESET moderators: sort out version/configuration control; sort out availability on the appropriate website and, if you're going to have a facility within the program to, and I quote: 'Check for Updates' - make it work!

Primarily because of the issue discussed HERE I have moved away from ESET on my desktop and will probably do the same on my laptop when the licence expires in Oct 16.  A shame as prior to v9 I was a big fan of ESET Smart Security.

  9. I wasn't referring to the Changelog pages.  The download page here: hxxp://www.eset.co.uk/Download/Software/Product/ESSH shows v9.0.375.  If you download the file it shows v9.0.376.  There's no mention of v9.0.377 anywhere.  When a version is released in English, I (perhaps naively) expect that it will be available on the site specifically for the the home of the English language.

  10. Sorry Marcos. I know it would be helpful to you but I simply don't have the spare time or inclination to reinstall and run through all this and go through protracted exchanges.  As I stated, I have gone back to v8 and all is fine...............and, additionally I can disable modules I don't want and not get the nagging red warning on the System Tray icon.

  11. Running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64-bit.  Running ESET Smart Security v9.0.318 64-bit.

I have been experiencing several issues with SS v9: momentary computer/program freezes (Chrome, Outlook 2013 etc.) and particularly issues with Windows Media Center.  The main issue is that when selecting Live TV it took around 30 to 50 seconds before the Live TV would begin.  Since going back to SS v8.0.319 I've experienced no freezes and the Live TV feed begins almost immediately.  I am using a Hauppauge Nova-DT Dual DVB-T card.

I've gone back to v8.0.319 and will be sticking with it for now so, unfortunately I'm not able to produce any log files.

  12. Again, I do want to be warned about certain security risks. I do want to know if any of the components I willingly enabled failed, I do want to know if my signature database is out of date, I do want to know if my AV encountered a virus etc.

Smart Security 8 had no problem doing just that.

That's why "ignore the red security icon" simply does not work - it prevents me from seeing if there is an actual security warning! This has become a security problem for me!

How many users "accidentally" misconfigure their security in its advanced options and disable both security features they did not mean to disable as well as the alerts for them in several vastly different locations?

Is that really such a wildly common occurrence that it's worth making Smart Security less security and less usable for those who actually know what they are doing? If you design a product foolproof only fools will want to use it.

But if advanced users are no longer your target audience, then I guess I have no choice but to take the hint and my business elsewhere. I'm just unhappy that I did not get to use the full amount of time I paid for this product.

I'm another in this camp.  If I disable a feature e.g. anti-phishing, spam etc. I don't want to be alerted to this; I have made a concious decision.  This will cause me to look elsewhere for a software package I can configure rather than pandering to the lowest common denominator.
