  1. On booting win 7 x64 and only since upgrading to v9, do I get a message from ESET saying that the protocol filtering proxy has failed to start and HTTP, POP3 etc will not be protected. I just logout and then login again and this seems to correct this.

The error is linked to how quickly I logon.

Is this a timing issue in v9? *Never* say this message with v8.

    TIA,

  2. Kaspersky's take was that the vast majority of their support calls were from people messing with the advanced settings and not knowing what they were doing and making a real hash of it. They did have a list of registry settings for the increased tweakability, but they were not prepared to release them.

The only (very minor) issue I have had with ESET for a long time (and it was reported), if I log out of Win 7 and log back in again, on the login Gamer mode is active.

    Cheers

  3. 13 days of warning that a license is about to expire is excessive, in my opinion.

Since ESET users are very competant, I would think that 3 or four days OR a warning every two or 3 days would be sufficient.

Why oh why did you have to mention my BIGGEST hate of ESET and AV software in general? It ranks way up there with AV software being much cheaper from, say, Amazon, than direct from the company.

Ping ESET:- Please stop insulting our intelligence and reign this in.

  4. I had a real fight on to get this installed. I have UAC turned off and I use an admin account as the main login. I had to overcome the main stumbling block of the install program not having enough permissions to close the service of v7 to complete the uninstall before the installation of v8.

I managed to get over that. The only issue I have now is that real-time protection refuses to start autopmatically and I have to do it manually each time I login. I only have Win 8.1 on one of my 6 multibooting PCs to play with so this is not a major issue, it is just that it is annoying and the solution may help others.

    v7 worked and installed fine.

    Is there a known fix?

    TIA

  5. Just an update on this issue. It still persists, but in a puzzling way.

My main PC multiboots; I have Win 7 x64, Vista x64 and Win XP x86 along with several Linux distros.

The problem does not exist with Win 7, but it still does with the other Windows I have installed. It cannot be a proxy issue as this is a consistent finding. I shall try clearing the update cache in the affected OSs.

Edit:- Just popped into the other OSs to clear the update cache and there was an update before I cleared the cache without error. The common denominator here is that XP and Vista are not used that often so does not get frequent updates. The issue could be linked to the time between updates. It is a very minor issue but a) annoying and b) I do not like computers too win LOLZ.

  6. I do not want to disable protection against PUAs at all. I just do not want ESET to block a site or sites even before anything has began to download. I am happy with a warning about a specific download, but not wholesale blacklisting. If ESET is competent in PUA detection, blunderbuss site blocking is not necessary.

    I agree that is why I renewed :D .

I did check the market, just as I do for all insurances, every year and I do take into account the price of the product as well as its quality. I do think every AV publisher is taking advantage of its customers. Invariably, new licences are cheaper than renewals from the publishers and that is just not justifiable.

I will only buy from proper sources, which rules out eBay. The best ESET UK could do would be to match the Amazon price, so I bought from Amazon. The price of a 3PC ESET AV licence had approximately doubled in the past year, which spurred me to check the market too.

Kaspersky sucks, both the software and the support. BitDefender managed to delete some small system folders. They might not have been needed (the PC booted and worked) but I did not take a chance and restored the backup.

I like the configurability of ESET. Kaspersky made a BIG mistake when they dumbed down their interface on the gounds that so few users used the advanced options and their misuse caused many probs for support.

You've got me for another year guys  .

  8. The licences are definitely correctly applied - the different expiry days tell me that. I made really sure of this when setting things up. I would assume that if things were set up as you postulate, a copy would not have remained registered for nearly a year.

I'm sure ESET will get to the bottom of it. I really just want to check if this issue will cause problems when the new licence is applied.

Thanks to you both for your help so far.

    Cheers

  9. You are right, renewals SHOULD be cheaper, but they are only cheaper than ESET's inflated new licence price. The new licences are cheaper still from Amazon.co.uk. I saved approx £10 over the ESET discounted price. ALL AV companies sell their own products at a higher price than regular retail outlets. I have never come across any exceptions to this.

The cheapest option for me by far was new licences from Amazon.

  10. I have 6 PCs with ESET AV (just renewed).

As new licences are cheaper than upgrades from ESET UK that is what I have bought. 3 PCs' licenes expire on the 26th of this month and the other three on the 27th.

One of the latter group becomes unregistered even when the licence is still valid - the other 5 PCs are still okay.. It accepts the correct licence info to become re-registered. Why is this happening and do I need to worry?

    Thanks

  11. I have heard of those stories and am aware of the issue, BUT I have never got anything unintended from SourceForge.

Personally, I would like to be able to at least start to download* what I want and either during the download or execution, ESET steps in. Just my (strong) preference.

*At least I can configure ESET to work the way I want. Signed up my 6PCs for another year.

  12. If it is too much trouble for ESET to use, why have it? Surely, if they are going to go to the trouble to actually produce an updated version, it just makes sense to get it on as many PCs as possible. If the issues are not that critical, why update?

I just cannot understand the (lack of) logic.

  13. Product updating:

My product version kept telling me it was 'up to date',  yet a new product was released. Thanks to a reply from Marcos I was soon put right and had the new product installed in no time.

Is the user notified in the GUI?  Seemed a little odd to me there was a newer version out and my GUI didn't tell me, it could be the update was of no significance.

    Dave

Same here. I have 6 PCs to keep up to date and I gave up waiting for the program to update itself. I wonder if the feature even works?

  14. Looks like it's bundled with InstallCore when the "Direct Download Link" is set to "Off". I put this in a VM and it pulled down all sorts of ######. You really, really don't InstallCore's malware on your computer. Find an alternative software and, ideally, report this abuse to sourceforge. They should not be hosting malware.

I have never got any malware installed by installing this program, no matter how I have downloaded it unless ESET has let it though.

MalwareBytes shows my PC is clean as does ESET NOD32. I don't know what the heck you have been doing ;) , but I have no malware problems or infections here.

    I have whitlisted SourceForge.

  15. It is not the software, it is the site in this case.

Go to hxxp://sourceforge.net/projects/smplayer/files/Unstable/redxii-unstable/ and download one of the files. When the timer on the next page gets to zero one gets the attached.

Marcos, I am using the link in the dialogue box to report the site as okay and have done so several times.

There is NOTHING bundled in the installer and I can download the file by using the 'direct download' link on the page with the countdown. Also, I have just discovered, that if one turns on the Direct Download Link that is on the page lined above (see screenshot), ESET does not protest.

Basically, why let us report and incorrectly blocked page and do nothing about it?
