SSL checking is ON by default and ESET's certificate is installed in Trusted root CA...

    Interesting. Are you sure ?

It wasn't enabled for me when I was in the Advanced Setup window. I don't use SSL scanning, so if it would have been enabled I would have disabled it, but I didn't need to do that as it was disabled by default for me. Maybe it depends on what OS you install ESET on ?

SSL scanning is turned on by default, except for Windows XP

There we go, that explains it. Thank you Martin  :D

  2. Try to reduce memory from 100mbs to 50 or 40mbs this can help

Because ? And help with what exactly ? Do you even know why the RAM usage is like it is ?

(sorry for only quoting one of your requests...I simply don't have time to ask questions about each one)

No, rugk doesn't hate you, don't be silly kakashi. It's just that we are all concerned about what would happen with the products if you were head of development at ESET.  ;)  ESET could easily loose over 50% of their user-base if they did a 360 with their product lineup, and started to offer something totally different. If we would go over to Kaspersky's, Symantec's, Bitdefender's, Avast's, Webroot's etc etc... forum and copy your post and paste it there, do you think they would appreciate it, or not ?

(People use their products (just like ESET) because they like them, not because they want the products to become something totally different.)

Why do you even use ESET if you don't like it and want it to change so badly ?

There are over a 100 other AVs you can try out if you like, maybe one of them will suit you better.

  4. So Beta 9 is here...I have only installed in on the XP box so far, but I haven't used the computer so I don't know how it will run when I actually do things yet. But I thought I could write a bit about my first impressions as things has changed quite a lot, especially the new makeup ESET put on its face  :)

At first I thought "hmmm ok I can get used to this GUI"...but later on the 3'rd time I went into the Advanced Setup I felt at home right way. The opening and closing of the sections feel practical enough. So as a whole, I think the new GUI design is fine. At least I am very happy that they didn't make it Black or very dark like Bitdefender for example, that would be terrible. I am also happy that ESS still can be considered bloat free.

I have seen elsewhere that some think the GUI is "too big" and there's too much unused background space, well IMO that depends where you are in the GUI. For example, if you are at "Tools" you have some unused background space underneath, but if you click on "More tools" all that unused space fill up with icons. I really hope they don't make it smaller as that would only result in that we have to scroll much more, instead of clicking.  And the "Advanced Setup" window is the same size as the main gui, and I don't feel shrinking it would result in an easier to use GUI. The size is good as it is. I rather navigate the GUI by clicking through it, than scroll through it.

    2. I notice egui.exe now uses 35mb and not 5mb as V8. And ekrn.exe sit at 130mb.

    3. I see that the "Active Mode" under "Web access protection" in the Advanced Setup for e.g browsers is gone now.

    4. "About" is gone from the main GUI and put under "help and support", but still easy to access from the tray menu as always.

    5. Anyone remember "Update now" ?

Guess what...It is back in the tray menu, it is now called "Virus signature database update...".

(Perhaps the poll results had something to do with "update now" making a comeback ..https://forum.eset.com/topic/1651-tray-menu-options-poll/ ).

Now, I don't remember the name but a new ESET process starts when you start "Banking & Payment protection" I will call it B&PP for short. And this B&PP process stayed in task manager even after I closed the browser. It wasn't resource hungry at all only 4-5mb. But shouldn't the B&PP process close down when I quit the browser ?

That's all for now I guess....so far so good  :)

  5. @Marcos

Maybe you could include the "known issues" list and "system requirements" in your OP so people can see it straight away ?

    Just a thought  :)

    Known Issues
    • Upgrade from previous versions is not supported - clean installation is required
    • Reset settings to default doesn’t work
    • Anti-theft association message cannot be dismissed in some cases
    • Anti-theft doesn’t send screenshots from webcam and desktop when a device is in missing state
    • Windows 10: only build 10074 is supported
    • Windows 10: firewall is blocking network connections / firewall driver fails after reinstall of the application / OS upgrade
    • Installation of the beta product over different type of product is not supported (ESET NOD32 Antivirus over ESET Smart Security and vice versa)
    • Firewall troubleshooting wizard counter always shows zero
    • Help texts are outdated
    • Banking & Payment protection frame is not always correctly displayed
    • Importing certificates for SSL scanning to Firefox fails in some cases
    • Only the latest versions of browsers are supported for SSL scanning
    • SysInspector crashes on Windows XP

    System requirements
For the seamless operation of ESET Smart Security 9 Beta, edition 2016 or ESET NOD32 Antivirus 9 Beta, edition 2016, the system should meet the following hardware and software requirements:
Processors Supported: Intel® or AMD x86-x64.
    Operating Systems: Microsoft® Windows® 8.1, 8, 7, Vista,
    XP SP3+ 32-bit, XP SP2+ 64-bit.

Linux operating systems are only used on a very small fraction of desktop/laptop computers – under 2% in April 2015, according to Net Market share – but Linux systems can be bought off the shelf from Dell, and are popular with enthusiasts. Linux is also widely used as a server OS. Although it is considered a more secure platform than Windows, malware for Linux does exist, and is aimed particularly at servers. Additionally, there is the risk of Windows malware passing through Linux systems undetected. For these reasons, we have reviewed the available Linux antivirus products, a number of which are free.
  7. This has been requested/discussed in the past several times. Afaik, considering that ESET is a highly integrated product, not only for simplicity but also for system performance, it might not be easy to do this in a good and easy way without ruining the product as we know it today.

But then again, the Parental Control and a few of the other features that some users might disable/enable does not use that much additional disk space. I have always had Parental Control disabled and it works fine like this.

Personally, I would like to keep it as it is, unless there are good benefits that I don't know about that overweigh the current product concept of having everything tightly integrated.

Edit: P.R. was a bit faster.....

  8. Hello,

thank you very much for your positive feedback.

The GUI is new so no need to prepare for the "for the "ahhh the GUI looks so old and dated" comments." ;-)

It is modern and light, I and most of my colleagues really like it so I hope you will like it as well.

Of course the new GUI is not the only new thing in v.9, so stay tuned!

    Regards,

    P.R.

Hey Peter, nice seeing you again.

That's lovely, then it might be better to be prepared for the "ahhh I don't like the new GUI" comments  :D But the reality is you can't please everyone, that's impossible. And I'm sure most people will get used to it after some time, if not directly.

Sounds great Peter, we can't wait to give it a test ride.

    tells everything...

It indeed does, I didn't have time to research more about the url yesterday I only posted it and logged out. If anything is hilarious, it must be that a person saying he is a  "Senior Information Security Researcher" didn't bother to research more about the website itself before shouting out about it.

“We have taken the report sent to us very seriously and have immediately started our own investigation. The mentioned vulnerability in the ESET activation system doesn’t exist. The vulnerability was found on a fake website that is not owned by ESET or by any ESET partner. That site cannot generate new licenses. The site is currently blocked by the ESET products as a phishing website because it is misleading users and misusing the ESET brand.

We don’t recommend accessing the mentioned website and ESET is currently working on shutting it down.”

  10. In what is no doubt a sign that humanity as we know it is coming to a swift, unproductive end, Microsoft has announced that King's notoriously moreish Candy Crush Saga will come pre-installed with Windows 10. That's right, pre-installed. In what appears to be an entirely non-ironic post over at Xbox Wire, Microsoft says that "as an added bonus, Candy Crush Saga will automatically be installed for customers that upgrade to or download Windows 10 for periods of time following the game launch."

There's no word on whether you'll be able to opt out of the automatic install, although it's likely King will want to get as many people as possible hooked on Candy Crush given its recent financial struggles. Earlier today, the company's shares fell as much as 14 percent in after-hours trading after it issued a profit warning. It noted in its first quarter financials that revenue was lower than expected due to slowing Candy Crush sales, and players moving to "more mature games."

Added bonus ?.....No MS, what you are trying to say is "added bloat" and nothing else.

The Emsisoft method seems good. I reckon it's better and safer to wait a couple of minutes to make sure it works for all users, than the product tries to update immediately which may result in a failed update for some, and wait another 59min or so for the next automatic update check.

(Unless the user perform a manual update right after the failed update.)

Though that is at boot, not sure how they do it at "wake from sleep" but I guess it's similar.
