Repair didn't work. Will try a clean reinstall.

For the time being, I've just decided to block most of the traffic back to MS which goes through Windows Explorer and some other processes. I appreciate that this may affect some features of Windows 8 from working correctly but I'm going to monitor things and if I notice any problems, I can always unblock or edit the rule.
It's staggering just how much more traffic to MS I'm seeing on Windows 8 compared to previous versions.

Thanks for the reply Arakasi.
Learning mode made no difference for the user. There are absolutely no rules for IE and FF set in ESET which is making this very frustrating to resolve. The browsers work fine for the user when the firewall is disabled or in automatic mode.
I'm going to try a repair install or ESS to see if that helps.

I've run into a bit of a weird problem today. I have set up 2 child accounts on my laptop. Both are monitored with Family Safety and both have been granted access to the internet. However, one of the accounts is unable to access the net using IE or Firefox. The only thing that fixes it is disabling the firewall through an elevated uac prompt.
There's no rules set to block those apps and prompts appear and access if granted for the other users. Neither parental controls or profiles are enabled in ESET.
The 'Fix connection problems' option in IE state that the connection has been blocked by ESET Security firewall rules but as previously mentioned, there are no such rules blocking IE or FF.
Can anyone suggest anything to try please?

Do you mean that no window with action selection is displayed for non-Metro applications when run from the start screen? Such applications should open on the desktop which means that the firewall prompt window should be displayed as well.
No I mean that some metro apps such as Bing News, Sport etc seem to be generating traffic through other services such as Windows Store Host and svchost. However, the prompt only shows on the desktop so cannot be actioned until I switch to desktop.
-
Just seen the setting to allow Metro apps. It was already enabled.
However, opening some apps still seem to initiate internet traffic from connected apps and services.

I've just installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop and have been experiencing issues with ESS v6.0.316.0 and v7.0.302.0.
When using apps from the start screen, I don't see a firewall prompt when that app requires internet access. I have to go back to the desktop in order to see the prompt.
Is there any way I can force ESS to display the prompt on the app window?
Thanks.

To be honest i think the performance related tests on any antivirus or security suite is going to be different on every computer its run on.
Over the years i have tried every one and they all have issues of some sort and there will be tradeoffs with them. ESS v 4.0 is by far the fastest version i have ran on my own pc, but maybe others would say that v 5 or 6 are quicker.
I have been running v7 since it came out on beta and its been better than its predecessor v6 by a mile for me and just keeping my fingers crossed that on release of the final version that its performance is on par with v4

i do agree with you that V4 is the fastest one i have ever used.and it will be great if v7 is faster than v6 .
i think it should be HIPS which mainly affects the performence.
What they said regarding v4.
Performance has got noticeably worse since then.
How on earth does Norton keep coming out of these tests so well? It has been absolutely dreadful in terms of performance on all machines I have seen it installed on for about 10 years.
Very dodgy.

Are you saying the webpage problem is being caused by ESS v7 and Ad Muncher on 64 bit OS?
-
Certainly could be a link with FF as I'm using 23.0.1. Unfortunately, I didn't test to see if the issues occured on IE.
Should be easy enough for ESET to test though.
For the record, I think FF is still pretty fast but being lean isn't near the top of the list any more

Please create a SysInspector log and send it to me attached to a personal message. Also please confirm or deny that disabling advanced memory scanner helped or not. You wrote you were going to try it but then you wrote you went back to v6 without answering my question which is very important for us to know
Do you still want the log as I have gone back to v6?
The Windows and other applications lagging did improve when AMS was disabled but I decided to go back to the previous version as browsing performance continued to be an issue.

Went back to v6. No more Windows slow downs or website lagging....
The downside is; it's just a matter of time till my first failed login and the firewall prompt bug
-
Thanks for the reply Marcos.
Nothing specific, just most things. Sometimes there's a few seconds delay when opening a Windows Explorer window.
I've also noticed webpages occasionally take an absolute age to load or finish loading. Broadband speed seems fine and stable when I test it. Usually refreshing the page sorts it out but it's a little annoying. It's not something that happened before using v7.
I'll try your suggestion to see if that helps with the performance issue.

Thought I'd try the beta version as there are a couple of annoying bugs in v6.
So far, the bugs that affected me on v6 haven't occured on the beta...although I've used it for less than a day so there's plenty of time for that to happen
What I have noticed is a general slow down in computer performance. Ekrn.exe seems to be eating regular chunks of cpu.
I installed the beta version fresh and made sure there were no files/folders/registry settings left behind after uninstalling v6. Could this be a configurational problem or is this the norm for v7?
I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 - Up to date
Intel® Core 2 Duo E6600 'Conroe' 2.40Ghz - Overclocked to 3.20GHz
4GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX RAM
PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro Xtreme 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E GPU
Will supply more info if needed.
Thanks.

No joy, I'm afraid.
First two reboots were fine but it was a case of third time unlucky for me.
EventID 7022: The ESET Service service hung on starting.
I dont want to discourage others from trying the same solution. I am not sure if your issue is directly related to this same service system file or not, also the first time you have posted in this thread.
Eset service (ekrn) is totally different then the BFE service or Epfwwfpr service.
nickster, could you paste a screen shot of the event viewer error with details of your lockup ?
The screenshot will have to wait for the next error as I've just cleared my logs out.
However, could there be a link with the Anti-Stealth support module: 1051 (20130822) and/or the HIPS support module: 1094 (20130822)?
I experienced at least 9 failed logons since those modules were updated and even though they occured before, they were not as frequent.

I get this error regularly. I run the firewall in interactive mode and the error always changes the position of the firewall prompt to the far left of the display. It happens to all users who use the computer and is extremely annoying.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling ESS, then re-doing all my rules one by one but the problem persists.

Thanks Arakasi, that looks very helpful. I will try your suggestion asap.
@ESET:
I've been experiencing failed logons for ages now. The trouble is, they're so sporadic so generating crash dumps isn't really convenient. However, 4 failed logons within about 3 hours this morning have really tested my patience..along with the other 4 from the previous 14 days.
There seems to be a lot of suggestion that MBAM and v6 of ESS/NOD32 do not play nicely together but surely the ESET developers/testing team are capable of proving this or ruling it out without the need of complete crash dumps? It's in the interests of paying customers that a resolution is found and quickly.
Have ESET contacted MBAM developers for a possible resolution? I'm sure MBAM would want to ensure that their pro version doesn't cause serious stability issues when used with another popular security program. At the end of the day, the paying customer will eventually decide to ditch one program in order to continue using the other. I have about 8 months subscription to ESS left and I'm just about ready to cut my losses and look for replacement anti-virus and firewall software.
V6 has been on the market for 9 months and the issue(s) persist. v4.2.71 was the last 'stable' release I used. I never had logon failures or firewall configuration errors.
Anyway...gonna try Arakasi's suggestion now.

Thanks for the reply Marcos.
I found the reason for the lack of prompts. I unchecked 'Allow all traffic within the computer' and the prompts are coming as normal now.

I've been doing a little testing with ESS v6.0.316.0 in IE and FF (latest versions) in interactive mode and both browsers load the Google homepage and sometimes search results and their corresponding websites without offering a firewall prompt
WTF is that all about?!
The behaviour is consistent on both browsers. Surely a prompt should pop up before I even enter a search term...nay, before the page even loads.
I can browse to multiple sites without even having to click allow.
This is madness.
Why is this happening??!!!
And no, this is not due to my rules...there are no rules on my system which allow these browsers to send and receive without my knowledge.

Some progress....
Firefox now works, but still no joy from IE in interactive mode.
I exported my rules before uninstalling. Rebooted, reinstalled with internet disconnected. Set up ESS for interactive mode without any rules imported or created. Switched user profile to child account then enabled internet but still nothing.
Absolutely bizarre as there are no rules including IE on my system but ESS is still blocking it for one user.
Running out of ideas now.
