Perhaps a problem with Windows Update? It's known to 100% utilize cpu by svchost.exe.

I've had this problem before with version 9 and I have to install any antivirus and now with version 10, there is still the problem for me.....!!

as a supplement to #2

MaHDi2LoNE please note that yesterday was a microsoft patchday and this is a windows process you that make problems ;)

A problem I had with v10 - regardless of Microsoft patch day - was an intermittent lack of network throughput , which was severed enough to render the product useless, and I have now reinstalled version 8, which seems to be the last version of ESS that can be truly relied upon to 'just work'.

I had the same issue and the cause is as Marcos properly diagnosed as Windows Update.  Eset has triggered a Windows 7 MS check for update. The MS Update for Windows 7 has been seriously messed up since shortly after Windows 10 release.

Some have reported it taking days to just check the catalog. I have disabled the Checking for Microsoft updates in Eset and it has resolved the issue. I do not recommend this for everyone but because of this Microsoft update issue is without resolution I disabled MS Windows 7 updates completely.

I had numerous freezes requiring hard resets when doing system scans. I did a clean install...even ran the clean up tool in safe mode. Back to v9 :(

I have seen a number of people on other forums complaining about issues running v10 Final.

I have seen a number of people on other forums complaining about issues running v10 Final.

The only problem I had, as noted in post #6, was actually caused by Windows update and not Eset. But even with Windows update chewing away at 10% of my CPU and eating 2 Gigs of memory EIS did not stall or lag. Nor did it during install. After killing the offending svhost.exe task  through Task manger everything went back to normal. This was on Windows 7 x64

What OS are you running? Which version of Eset are you installing? With some additional information one or more of the members of the forum may be able to help.

However, if you are set on going back to v9.x so be it.

I'm running Win 10 1511 and installed ESS v10. It installed fine but would freeze while doing a system scan. I deleted the folder it had frozen on but the next scan it froze somewhere else. When it froze even task manager would not open.

In the near future I hope to reformat and Install Win 10 AU and will try ESS 10 again.

I assume you don't have the same issue with svchost.exe as OP does. If so, I'd suggest creating a new topic as it must be a different issue. Also let us know temporarily disabling which of the protection modules makes a difference.

No i don't have svchost.exe problem and for disabling protection module it will be a problem because the problem don't happen instantly so i have to disable it all day while browsing

ESS V9 has started freezing& but only for 2-30secs  upon opening or running some programmes like flash player in ff , last night EKRN.exe was hogging my CPU at 15-20% for ages, no scanning on anything; but i was able to see it in task manager

Well after a little testing with the exploit blocker disabled the problem lag/freezing /pausing when i run a certain programme ( Port forward tool ) runs with no pauses

Well today i noticed delays in running other apps that had previously run without the ridiculous delays from double clicking to them actually running (freezing/pausing) so i disabled completely the HIPS module and everything is lightning fast even web browsers loading web pages, previously opera with several tabs loaded would take an age to actually open, and longer for pages to load , without HIPS loaded it almost instant just as i would expect from the hardware of this machine, ESET there is a serious problem with the HIPS it's crippling even the high-end hardware, please do something ? HIPS support module: 1250 (20161010) was the issue  for me using V9

After downloading the pre release modules eset gui even freezes after loading windows, eset is also slow loading after booting into windows in fact it's one of the last things to load up , not normal behaviour going by previous months that V9 has been on this machine (Feb 16)problems started in October so the devs need to review what changes they made to modules at that time because something they did broke eset ss v9 too because it shares the same modules as version 10 every year they manage to screw things up after the release of a new version  why keep releasing new versions each year ?

Apps that are mostly affected are opera browser , CPUz  Microsoft word  epson printer config, when trying to print a document  So back to running with your laggy drain of resources HIPS disabled

The splash screen is shown by egui.exe which is started by ekrn.exe. Could you measure how much slower Windows loads with and without ESET installed? Do you observe the delay also with default v10 settings? A boot log from Process Monitor could shed more light. Also disabling protection features, one by one, and narrowing it down would help us for further troubleshooting. I'd start off with temporarily disabling automatic start of real-time protection and restarting the computer.

Hi, marcos , firstly i'm still running Version 9 ss, & not 10, but was seeing the same freezing issues caused by the Hips module,  Currently windows and other programes currently are loaded befor eset appears, though my teamspeak server that i host  is unable to connect  to authenticate until eset loads , so although the lan icon is in the task bar showing internet , eset FW is actually blocking until it loads ,maybe? as for the loading time  from when my desktop loads it's around 45 secs before eset loads , it used to load within 10-20 secs

I'm happy to provide a boot log from proc explorer , i think i recall how to set that up, it's been a long time

Ok I set up the boot time logging and rebooted the machine, and have rarred the log i'll pm you the location

Eset hips does not like proc mon, it froze it out for over 2 mins

Setting the real time protection  makes no noticeable difference eset loads after everything else, also the GUI is buggy it hangs for a long time when selecting to enable real-time protection after a restart  for example

Well i had to DISABLE hips module again , sick of it's freezing  and hogging  some 20+%CPU cycles even after the program it was scanning or didn't like has been closed which it does for  upto 10 seconds

It makes using the system internals app called Autoruns  almost impossible freezing  causing it to close out  HIPS is a big joke When are eset going to fix this?

Is there any further updates on this hips issue? and what is being done about the delay in eset loading at start up ?  i uploaded the log and PM'ed marcos the location & details, but have heard nothing since

[sCR] Some have reported it taking days to just check the catalog. I have disabled the Checking for Microsoft updates in Eset and it has resolved the issue. I do not recommend this for everyone but because of this Microsoft update issue is without resolution I disabled MS Windows 7 updates completely.

I was plagued too with this ridiculously long lasting Win7 Update Checking for several months, all of a sudden, for no apparent reason and clearly quite some time after it originally emerged for a lot of other Win7 users. But with the latest Microsoft Patch Day (or the one before that) all is running smoothly on Microsoft Patch Day again - no longer so called 17% CPU usage (on a 6 core CPU PC, ie. 6*16.666 = 100% CPU?...), no more CPU cooler vent howling for hours, making any reasonable work on PC impossible! (You can check which "component" (service) of 'svchost.exe' is causing the high cpu usage with (Win7) <ctrl><esc> 'perfmon /res<ENTER>', then register ('tab') "CPU", then looking under 'services', for me it was 'wuauserv'...)

Thus it would be better if you and anybody else having stopped Win7 Auto-Update would think about reenabling it, be it just for security reasons. You can find a website about this with good tips here

And don't forget to check the update history after each and every Microsoft Patch Day, it's incredible on how much customer PCs I have found patches that were not installed because of errors!... (This in strong contrast to my Win7 PC where failed patch installations were and are extremely rare.)
