ERA Virtual Appliance CentOS update

Hi there,

 

ERA virtual appliance reports itself as OS out of date(CentOS 7.2.1511). If this happens to you as well, you must enable web management console from VM console level, then browse to https://(yourserverIP):10000 for example: https:192.168.0.10:10000, user name is root, while password is the same password that you use to login to ERA server. On the left hand side menu select System > Software Package Update and install all available packages. Once completed, perform system reboot. Few minutes after the restart ERA should report itself as up-to-date. 

 

NOTE: This post was initially started as an enquiry, but I have managed to work it our half way through, so I've decided to leave tips for others experiencing similar problem.

found this searching for info on ERA_Appliance upgrade path from 6.3 to 6.4.

 

I have two 6.3 ERA_Appliances running under VirtualBox.

A week ago I set about my first deployment under KVM/QEMU.

I created a new VM and connected it to the qcow2 disk file I converted from the vmdk contained in the OVA.

The only GRUB selection that would boot was the 'rescue' selection. Normal boot failed to locate root.

Then I noticed CENTOS 7 during startup (vs CENTOS 6.7 on the VirtualBox hosts) and realized I was using a newer version of the Appliance.

 

The v6.3 Appliance converted and runs fine under KVM/QEMU.

 

I'm happy to see it running, but I'm curious about the upgrade path:

CENTOS Wiki advises against in place upgrade from 6.7 to 7 as several of the packages in 6.7 are of a higher version than is included with 7.

 

Any others using ERA_Appliance.ova under KVM/QEMU?

We do not recommend upgrading appliance 6.3 (or older) to CentOS 7. This scenario is not supported nor tested and will most probably result in non-functional ERA components.

Regarding problems with ERA 6.4 Appliance (based on CentOS 7) virtualized using QEMU/KVM we will have to investigate it further. My guess is that there is problem with missing kernel drivers (the same problem as we have with Citrix XenServer, see related forum topic). Unfortunately CentOS 7 kernel does not loads drivers for all virtualization environments and it has to be done manually - and currently we do not even known which drivers are missing.

I need to be able to run the ERA Appliance 6.4 and onwards on our KVM/Qemu virtual environment. Can we get this working?
