Online scanner crashes

Recommended Posts

Tried running the online scanner on my Win 10 x64 system. Tried it multiple times, under safe mode as well. It runs for over an hour and gets maybe 3/4 done and crashes.

Hello,

you you be able to provide us with an application crash dump?

You need to download a Procdump tool from Microsoft site: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx

run a scan by ESETOnlineScanner than run the Procdump from elevated command prompt with command procdump -ma -e ESETOnlineScanner

once ESETOnlineScanner crashes, it will dump a process memory into a file (with .dmp extension). Please pack it with output from ESET Log Collector output, upload it to a safe location and send me a private message with the download link, we will check it.

Regards, P.R.

  • 2 months later...

This is exactly why I created an ESET Forum account.

In my case, the system is Vista 32-bit (yes, I know, but unlike my other (Win7) computers, it is still working!)

EOS Version 1 worked fine.

EOS Version 2 downloads, installs and starts OK, but crashes at some point, displaying an almost blank window.

(Windows reports 'EOS_v2 has stopped working'.)

Yesterday I managed to stop it part way to quarantine some files it had found in an archive area, then I restarted it.

So, fundamentally it IS working, up to a point...

I have downloaded procdump and will follow the above procedure overnight -- the ESET scan takes 5 hours to complete! -- then I'll start a new thread to request help.

Edit:

New thread may be found here: "Online Scanner v2 Crashes before completion"

Yep, this v2 online scanner is rubbish (sorry Eset). I've been using the Online Scanner with my customers for years, very reliable.

This latest v2 rarely ever finishes without crashing. Worse, when it crashes it leaves no record of what threats were detected and possibly deleted. And no quarantine to restore any false positives.

Please can we have v1 back again.

Hello Shane,

I'm sorry for your negative experience.

Crash is definitely something what should not occur and what we would like to fix.

If you are able to reproduce the crash please send me and TomasP a private message with a link to dump of the crashing Online scanner captured with a procdump, we will look into it.

Thanks, P.R.

Hi Peter,

It crashes almost every time I use it, W7, W10, no matter the operating system or computer. It looks like there are plenty of others also having this problem on here.

Sorry I just don't have time to troubleshoot this for you by creating dumps etc, I'm sure if you run it a couple of times on your own systems it won't take you long to replicate.

Personally I've given up on it. Don't have time to waste with products that don't work. Sorry.

Hello Shane,

I just downloaded the latest one from the web and it runs without any issues on my Win7 x64.

New version should be released soon so hopefully it will contain a fix for this, if not we welcome crash dumps from users, who are willing to help us to resolve it.

Regards, P.R.

Wow that was quick ;)

Try running it on a PC that is more representative of real world computers that this might be run on. Lots of programs installed, 100Gb plus of files, something that will take more than an hour to complete the scan. Also (from memory) when this has crashed the scan had already detected threats, and when I've then repeated it and it didn't detect anything it's completed. So maybe download and install some malware so it detects something during the scan. PUPs like Ask or Google toolbars should do the trick.

But you're also missing the other major point of my post. When it does crash, there is no record of the files that it has detected as threats and therefore what files it has deleted. So there is no way to review the scan for any false positives, nor is it possible to restore these false positives. With the old version there was a log and there was a quarantine. And you could run the scan again at any point in the future and still restore previously quarantined files, if you hadn't chosen to delete them of course.

Your scanner should not delete files, it should quarantine them and present the option to delete, as the old version did. Eset is very aggressive with malware and pups, and often what is detected as a pup is actually a legitimate program. Having these automatically deleted is another reason I won't be using this new version with my customers.

I'm having the same problem and two different Windows 10 (latest updates) pc's.  One with very little software installed.

After scanning for an hour or so, it it hung up, and I have to kill the process to terminate.

Shane, you're absolutely right. V2 has crashed on EVERY Windows 10 machine I've tried it on (I fix PC's, I see a lot of them).  I found V1 here (it appears to be safe and "uncorrupted": http :// eset-online-scanner.en.uptodown . com / windows / download  (fix the spacing to make that work as a link).  Good luck.

What is the link to the new version?  I just went to

https://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

and downloaded the "new" version.  However it is the SAME file size as the one I got last month, and the properties shows version 2.0.12.0.

What is the version of the new version?

I have been using ESETs online scanner for years and have found it to be a very useful tool.  But since the V2 release I have had a 90% crash rate!!  I run ESET from a variety of different computers running anything from Vista to Windows 10, both 32 and 64 bit versions.  I have started ESET through Edge, IE, Firefox, and Chrome.  The crash rate remains the same regardless of OS version of browser.  Please fix it.

When ESET crashes, it always the same.  The scan will run 80+% of the way through before crashing.  The ESET window turns mostly black.  At this point it will not finish the scan, I cannot access a list of what was found, all I can do is force Windows to close the program.

I have also experimented with scan options.  I have tried skipping various portions of the scan to see if the crash may be related to any specific options, but the crash rate remains the same.

You keep asking for crash reports.  For such a prolific are duplicable problem, it seems that it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out what is going on with out submitting them.  I would however be willing to do so if you direct me on where to go to find them.

Hello Kevin,

can you please try it with the latest version, should be more stable.

You can download it here: hxxp://ftp.nod.sk/~randziak/ESETOnlineScanner_ENU.exe

Hello John,

was any dump created by the Procdump? If yes please share it with me.

If no, please reproduce the issue and after you receive the error make a dump manually by "procdump -ma ESETOnlineScanner" run from an elevated command line, also please take a screenshot of the error message.

Thanks, P.R.

I tried to post here a few weeks ago.  Got message that post needed to be approved by moderators, but it has never appeared.

I too have been using the Eset Online scanner for several years, since ver 2 came out I have had to stop as it crashes on 95% of machines.

Does not matter what OS they have.  Just tried it again today and same thing.

It's very disappointing that Eset Engineers(?) are not even able to replicate the problem. I can't believe that so many people are having this problem but it works perfectly every time at Eset. Does not give me a good feeling selling these products to my customers knowing the inability of the Eset developers to write code that works.

It seems a shame that this GUI problem occurs most times, making the scanner almost unusable, as the scanner seem very good otherwise.

I'm running Windows XP Pro, 32 Bit and the hard drive has about 200 GB on it.

Can anyone please tell me where the virus vault / quarantine is please?
