Updating Virus Signature Database won't let Volafile.io load.

Hello ESET people and users,

I came across a bug recently and even though I tested it from another PC and verified it I would appreciate if anyone else can verify too.

I do use volafile.io site a lot. Sharing files with people. If you don't know what volafile is it's a site that you make a room and get people in there and you share files in real time. Suddenly, I figured out I couldn't managed to get on the site. The site isn't blocked by NOD as a harmful site but while you get into the room there's a loading moment that says Realtime FIlesharing! until the room it's loaded and you hop in. In normal cases the room loads instantly and you can't even see that. Or depending the connection you may just see it for like 1-2 seconds and then you're in. Now the problem I have is that the site is loading forever and won't go in the room.

When you click the room you are presented with the loading screen and it won't move on. I tried googling and yet found no related problems. So I started troubleshooting myself. First step was to boot into safe mode and it worked. So I managed to get the hint something must be going wrong with NOD. Tried to pause the protection but no luck. So since there is no way to close NOD (at least I don't know one) I thought to uninstall it. So going without antivirus in normal boot worked completely fine. Installed it again. Updated to latest virus signature database and site wouldn't load again. Uninstalled it again for further troubleshooting, re-installed and DIDN'T update the virus database. Site worked. Then updated and site didn't work. Then my next step was to test the site on my cousin's PC. We run the same signature database 13461(20160509) so far and both laptops wouldn't go in. I'm not quite sure since which virus database this happened as I didn't know NOD was the problem. But it's like a week now that the site won't load and I finally managed to figure that NOD is the problem when you update the virus database.

So after all this troubleshooting I came to the fact that something is going on with the virus database and the site won't load.

Is there anyone here with that uses volafile (or you can even test it yourself). Just go to Volafile and create a room. If the room loads then it must be something with me, if it won't load (which I assume you have latest signature database updated too) then it's NOD for sure.

P.S: I attached a picture with the loading screen. This is what you see and the squares are moving so you know the site is loading.

Does switching to pre-release updates in the advanced update setup help? If not, does disabling protocol filtering make a difference? If so, let's wait for Internet protection module 1252 which should be put on pre-release update servers soon and let us know if it helps.

First of all, as long as I was waiting for this post to get approved I tried the Nod 10 Beta. When updated to newest virus database it still didn't work (Just did some tests just in case).

So, enabled pre-release updates. Did the whole update (68mb) and I'm on 13461P (20160509) database version. If I'm correct that was the version v10 Beta used (not sure though) and still no luck.

Although, disabling the Protocol Filter seems to work fine. So I managed to find the IP from the site and add it on the exclusions. So I'm good with Protocol Filter on.

I'll keep the pre-release updates option to get the new module and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help.

This is a Websockets issue. I have 9.0.375.0 and have been having a ton of problems with Zenhub, Usetrace and a lot of my other work software that uses Websockets. I finally just figured out how to use pre-release updates and I updated, seems to have resolved the Websocket issue. I am on 13499P(20160516) and I hope this gets pushed out to standard soon so I can switch away from pre-release...

Tested on Win10 with Firefox, v9 installed, SSL scanning enabled, regular updates, Internet protection module 1251. I was able to open volafile.io, create a room and upload a file. What are you doing differently?

I just switched back to Regular updates and it all seems to be working now. I don't know if something was just stuck and changing to pre-release cleared it out, or if the update today fixed the issue. But it is working now. And so are the other sites I had issues with. I was testing in Chrome just for the record.
