ESET Smart Security 9 memory leak

Recommended Posts

I'm commonly seeing sustained memory usage between 350-450MB. Occasionally it almost reaches 1GB. Then I have no choice but to reboot to clear it.

I'm running XPsp3 with 2GB RAM so I can't afford this nuisance.

I'll be downgrading back to ESS8, till this problem gets sorted out.

I have 8.0.319 in XP SP3 and using pre-release updates. You can check my posts in this thread and you'll see that I was kinda affected -> not affected -> affected -> and now I am not affected by the leak again. Been fine for the last 1 and ½ month. Ekrn.exe stays within it's normal (for v8 IMO) range between 120-130mb. I have never seen it consume e.g 150-200mb like Marcos suggests under any circumstances, except when there is a leak, and then it doesn't stop at 200 but slowly goes up up up.

It doesn't matter how hard I try to make the leak reveal itself again, ekrn.exe's ram usage just stays normal no matter what.

P.R, where are you hiding mate?:P

You see, I wonder how it goes with this...

I'm reproducing the memory leaks here internally, I have and adjusted version with special memory tagging, hopefully we will be able to find something soon.

@SlashRose, what OS and product version & build do you use ?

Haha I don't believe this, it is back again.  :D ekrn.exe use 180mb right now, but reached as high as 690mb yesterday.

Since downgrading back to ESS 8 (production v. 8.0.319.0) the memory leak has NOT reoccurred at all. Still running XP sp3 (for a bit longer).

If it helps at all, here is the installed components list.

Yes it has indeed reoccurred, 540mb right now.

But it can go away soon again and stay normal, you never know.

Though it did (again) go back to normal after I made the post you quote, but around 5-6 days ago the leak reoccurred, again.

(I use pre-release updates which is why my module list looks a bit different).

  • 2 months later...

the memory leak is real and still ongoing, today (22 April 2016) I had to reboot my machine because ekrn was occupying 800MB of memory

I changed options to try pre-release updates

Update (23 April 2016):

I tend to browse the internet looking for things to download, then queue them up in flashget for downloading.
This morning I did that, 642 files 1,020MB, ekrn.exe memory usage went from ~132,000kB to ~451,000kB

Then I added flashget to the "Excluded applications" in "Protocol Filtering"

This afternoon 638 files 942MB, ekrn.exe memory usage didn't increase at all.

Hello Roger,

Yes, the leak is a known problem that affects some users. Not only when downloading, but also browsing and streaming videos in general.

Would be great if you could follow these instructions to create a full memory dump which can be sent to ESET for analysis.

hxxp://support.eset.com/kb380/

Excluding flashget may be a temporary quick fix as doing so is also a risk, but no permanent fix.

In preparation to replying to this I thought I would sample your "sysInspector"
I have a complaint
It has a "cancel" button that doesnt work

and it doesnt recognise that "SysInspector" is already running

I think I will stop using eset your programmers obviously dont know what they are doing

I managed to hit over 900MB with ekrn.exe. I have a full memory dump(procdump -ma ekrn) compressed(7z) but am unsure where to upload it. Considering this post has a 2MB attachment limit this isn't the place. Any help?
