LiveGrid and data collection with V9

Recommended Posts

I know that LiveGrid uses the cloud to keep up with the latest threats. Does this mean that LiveGrid sniffing around everything you do?

I can understand its for a good purpose but I dont think everyone is comfortable with this. I Know you can disable it but I have read on other forum that with LiveGrid disabled somehow ESET still transmitting data. Even if LiveGrid is unchecked upon installation LiveGrid is still activated after a clean installation  Maybe just a bug?

Does ESET collect any data and how do you disable it? I like to have my system protected without ESET sending any data. Is this possible with V9?

1, With LiveGrid disabled, no data is transmitted at all.

2, With LiveGrid enabled but with submission of files and stats disabled, virtually only hashes of files are transmitted (system client [query] -> server [response] -> client ). This is essential for instant protection against newly emerging threats, hence the protection status changes to red if LiveGrid is completely disabled.

3, With LiveGrid completely enabled, you receive an instant response to new threats + suspicious files are submitted to ESET + statistics about malware detection is submitted (file and stats submissions can be disabled separately). No sensitive data is submitted - documents and databases are excluded from submission by default. ESET uses various techniques mainly based on sophisticated analysis by advanced heuristics to evaluate the suspiciousness of files which is highly accurate. We recommend leaving submission of files enabled as it contributes to better threat detection and cleaning that we provide for all ESET users.

@Marcos, Thanks for this explanation of what's going on under the hood. I appreciate it.
