ESET Smart Security causing false 0x00000124 BSODs?

Recommended Posts

Marcos, thank you very much, no more mystique in what had happened!

I will now think how to eliminate AppCenter or substitute its functions with alternative s/w. If nothing else will crash...

One can guess that the origin of the issue can be from a habit of independent low-level programming in Gigabyte due to hardware design orientation. While it is usually more resource-efficient, sometime it can be dangerous for others. Who knows, in such a case you probably may persuade Gigabyte and ASUS to fix their drivers and release the updates; they will only gain of that too. Please share with them our opinion, if you continue the discussion.

By the way, I noticed that Gigabyte released the new version B15.0629.1 of AppCenter at 2015/07/03. Seems unlikely that they could already have the problem disappeared; I'm just wondering whether you know it?

Have to say that I’m dealing with many computers due to my job and am practically familiar with different antivirus solutions for years. At present I consider ESET as the best among all tested ones in consolidated rating. This is especially why the issue perceived so painfully, and so why the problem must be resolved cardinally, both with Gigabyte and ASUS.

Good luck!

We're going to release an updated Anti-Stealth module 1081 with a workaround for this kind of issues soon. It should be available on pre-release update servers first, with regular update servers to follow.

Just got the Anti-Stealth Module 1081 - the problem still exists -> after reboot Freeze in exact the same Moment the Icon in tray starts to spin

After I quickly deactivate all the AISuite III Services and running tasks before the first scan of Eset the problem did not appear

I have an Asus Z87 Sabertooth mit AI Suite III (only the Fan Module) installed and the Eset SS 8.0.319.1 with Prerelease Updates

Hello Hikester,

can you please provide us with actual full memory dump from the system freeze with Anti-stealth module 1081 for analysis?

Thank you in advance.

Just did the complete memory dump manually after the freeze (could reproduce it 3 times) - but the file is 16GB and rar-compressed still 624MB.

Since my Kaspersky trial expired yesterday, I gave NOD32 another chance.

Things changed since last try:

- BIOS update mainborad: ASUS Gryphon Z87, current version is 2103

- BIOS update SSD: Samsung 840 Evo

As before, ASUS AI Suite 3 is installed and running.

Clean install of NOD32 (not Smart Security!). After the first full scan, I rebooted the system. And after a few minutes, it stalled exactly the same way as before. Update icon showing, everything stops working.

Reboot, enabled test mode, cleared the cache, updated the database, rebooted.

After 10 minutes of NOT stalling, I rebooted again... now it's working for over an hour. Did you finally fix it? At least for me?

i have a sabertooth z87 with the AI Suite 3 installed

eset smart security version 8.0.312.0

virus database 11961

windows 7 pro 64 bit

can not supply memory dumps or error logs with this system cause none are produced

the system just locks up with the mouse locked to the center of the screen on the windows desktop the reset button no longer functions the only way to reset is to hold in the power button for 4 secs till system shuts down.....

no blue screen, no logs made i have tried everything i know to make it produce these logs for you guys

this is not a solution to fixing this... just makes it so the system will function for now

in the windows/system32/drivers/ehdrv.sys i renamed this file to ehdrv.sys.old in safe mode which shuts down HIPS and it runs stable this way

alright my system is running normal after the latest pre-release updates were install

no longer have to rename the ehdrv.sys and is not crashing with this pre-release updates

Asus motherboards z87's & z97's with AI suite installed workaround

Hikester make sure you followed these instructions exactly...

1st do this in safe mode:

in the windows/system32/drivers/ehdrv.sys i renamed this file to ehdrv.sys.old in safe mode which shuts down HIPS and it runs stable this way

2nd do this: restarted in normal mode

hxxp://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN3415

a. leave it on pre-release do not set it back to regular

b. once you hit the clear button

c. run update

d. then check the about page to verify it downloaded the P version and the list should be even newer now than the one i have up there

e. the about page.... click on the down arrow upper right corner and select about....

as of today the pre-release components are as follows:

Virus signature database: 12032P (20150802)

Rapid Response module: 6446 (20150802)

Update module: 1060 (20150617)

Antivirus and antispyware scanner module: 1464 (20150724)

Advanced heuristics module: 1158 (20150730)

Archive support module: 1234 (20150721)

Cleaner module: 1109 (20150519)

Anti-Stealth support module: 1081 (20150727)

Personal firewall module: 1278 (20150716)

Antispam module: 1029 (20141103)

ESET SysInspector module: 1247 (20150618)

Real-time file system protection module: 1009 (20130301)

Translation support module: 1377 (20150729)

HIPS support module: 1192 (20150728)

Internet protection module: 1207 (20150708)

Web content filter module: 1036 (20140625)

Advanced antispam module: 2456P (20150727)

Database module: 1070 (20150721)

LiveGrid communication module: 1019 (20141104)

Specialized cleaner module: 1010 (20141118)

3rd thing Safe Mode:

in the windows/system32/drivers/ehdrv.sys.old rename this file back to ehdrv.sys

that should fix your problem have fun ya'all peace im out of here

I apologize for my poor quality English language: the translation performed by service Google Translate with some of my patch.

I have a Gigabyte H97 motherboard and ESET SS 8. When the discussed here problem arised (06.22.2015) I had to disable the ESET Smart Security. Since then, in fact, my system is not protected by Antivirus. Despite the fact that in the document KB Solution ID: KB3740 is written, "ESET is working closely with Asus and Gigabyte to make sure this issue get resolved as quickly as possible." and in September, Gigabyte has released an update to App Center version B15.0811.1 - it does not solve the problem! In addition, I can not make use of advice given in KB
Solution ID: KB3740 because after enabling ESET SS in Safe Mode and the further the system is rebooted in Normal Mode immediately arises BSoD 0x124. What should I do in my situation?

If you are getting BSOD with v9 and the latest modules installed, it will be most likely a different issue than the one discussed in this topic. Please configure Windows to generate complete memory dumps. If BSOD occurs, a dump will be created. After a restart, compress the dump, upload it to a safe location and pm me the download link.

I've never seen a 0x00000124 BSOD not be bad memory. It is defective, incompatible with the motherboard,, undervolted or overclocked beyond its capabilities. As much as I have wanted to blame it on any particular software, replacing the RAM has always fixed it.

Hello Markos,

I am using ESET SS  8.0.312.3. To avoid the BSoD 0x124 in Normal mode of Windows, ESET SS 8 is disabled. In Normal mode I do not have access to ESET SS 8. I can enable or disable the ESET SS 8 only in Safe mode. If I enable ESET SS 8 in Safe mode and then reboots the system in Normal mode, immediately raises the BSoD 0x124.

How in my situation I can fulfill requirements specified in KB Solution ID: KB3740? Or, how in my situation I can uninstall ESET SS v.8 and install ESET SS v.9?
