[SOLVED]: Can't install Eset CyberSecurity on OSX 10.9.5 due to unspecified installation error

Can't install Eset CyberSecurity on OSX 10.9.5 due to unspecified installation error

-------------------

SOLUTION:

Run ONYX utility and all the maintenance tools and reboot.

I didn't investigate further why this happened, maybe Eset support staff can review, it looks like the installer wasn't able to use the Temporary directory?

-------------------

Issue:

Installer gives me error message right after it starts “Validation of packages or something”.. I get the error message and installation stops.

I tried uninstall using included uninstaller, manual cleanups etc..

Here is what happened..

I had version 6 installed but it was taking too long to scan.
Downgraded to version 5 (uninstall 6 and install 5). Issue didn’t resolve by downgrade but I resolved it by excluding some directories with huge number of documents (30k+) which I don’t need to scan.
After exclusion, EC seemed to run OK, so I decided to upgrade to version 6 again.
However, version 6 now seemed to take more CPU (5-25%) even when nothing scanning.
So I decided to remove version 6 and reinstall version 5.

However, I wasn’t able to install version 5 or version 6 and all I got is this non-descriptive error in the picture below.

Permissions repair didn't solve the issue. This didn't help either:

System otherwise stable and no issues, Mavericks 10.9.5. No plans to upgrade to Yosemite at this point.

Here is the screenshot right before installation stops:

Here are parts of the log, some of the sensitive info in the log was removed:

Hi polocanada,

It looks like version 5 of the installer that you included wasn't able to get the service running after a while, causing the script not to complete and for the installer to fail:

Mar 29 01:50:29 MACHINE_NAME_REPLACED.local installd[1305]: ./postinstall: ERROR: eset service is not running!

So you didn't have any issues installing version 6 at first, then going to version 5, then going back to version 6, until you tried to go back to version 5? Did you use the built in uninstall tool for that specific version each time (version 6's uninstaller for version 6), and restart your mac every single time you uninstalled?

It is a little unusual that you didn't have any issues in previous installs until later on (Personally never had install issues with Cyber Security).

However, I wasn’t able to install version 5 or version 6 and all I got is this non-descriptive error in the picture below.

That non-descriptive error within the Installer is common for all applications which use OS X's installer when installation fails. If you want to see detailed progress and the log in realtime when installing something in OS X, press Command + L and select to 'View All Logs' when the window appears on the bottom.

However, version 6 now seemed to take more CPU (5-25%) even when nothing scanning.

With the CPU, the real-time file system protection is quite active even when you think nothing is being scanned which may explain that CPU activity. If you open Cyber Security and go to Tools > Statistics, under 'Antivirus protection summary' you can view what is being scanned in the background (any files being used by processes or Applications).

Looking at a fully updated Cyber Security Pro 6.0.14.0 on Yosemite 10.10.2 with a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, with Activity Monitor running side by side, the CPU usage does go to 2 to 3% (maybe more) when something needed to be scanned in realtime, but then back to 0.5% or less when there is no activity (this is for the esets_daemon process). CPU usage for 'ESET Cyber Security Pro.app' only goes up to 1% at most, but is usually 0.5%. When doing a manual deep scan, esets_daemon reaches 50% CPU and 'ESET Cyber Security Pro.app' about 20% CPU (which is expected).

So, it is strange that you are getting up to 25% CPU when no activity is being performed (startup scan, update, realtime protection). Is there any heavy activity in 'Statistics' that might explain anything? There might be an application or process using/creating/modifying heaps of files.

Recent module updates have also helped with a number of issues since 6.0.14.0's release, along with Apple's OS X Yosemite improvements.

No, I may have used uninstaller in one package to uninstall another version. That may have been potentially problem, you are right.

I will give it another try with the "Statistics"  because I was about to download Avast or Sophos to replace Eset.  However, that's only one of the issues. The bigger issue is with the updates:

Unfortunately Eset has been a nightmare on Mavericks. I have two machines with 10.9.5, one 2010 using Mavericks for about 1 year, other machine 2012 is fresh install Mavericks. On both machines Eset brings the machine to crawl when the virus update is running. When the update runs sometimes the background scan peaks between 20-60% of CPU, sometimes stays below 20% for hours. I even have put the whole machine to exclusions and it still keeps scanning and scanning on both machines. After the update is completed Eset for stay still much higher than what you indicated, I never have it under 2-3%, even when it seems to be quiet.

This happens any time when scheduled scan is supposed to run, for example for definitions update because of course the scan is supposed to run. I even have disabled the automatic scan and I put the whole machine to exclusions.. .still it would show "spinning wheel" in the menu for hours before it stops. The definitions are updated fine but unless I terminate the daemon, it doesn't stop the scanner. I've tried remove it several times, clean up manually whole system.. Unfortunately - I paid for 2 machines for 2 years license for Eset and now it's useless. There is nothing in my log in Console so I can't tell even what's happening.

The wheel spins and spins when the update is running. When I go and terminate the daemon process after the wheel spins for 2 hours like that, after I terminate the process I suddenly I get notification "Eset definitions update was successful".  Checking the info screen, it shows latest definitions updated.

I uninstalled Eset and system runs perfect with out.

This experience is in stark contrast to what I had for over 10 years on Windows machine, where Eset was Nr. 1 and so silent and low on CPU that I was always wondering if it is there. It also worked well on Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

But no luck on Mavericks. Maybe Yosemite is better but I am not going to update to 10.10 yet.

Looking for replacement for Eset - unfortunately.

But I will give it another look at the "Statistics" screen as suggested above and I hope it would show some additional info. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be any log showing any issues.

Thanks.

Although the updating itself does show in Activity Monitor that the CPU is being used as much as possible, it shouldn't really be affecting the Mac that much.

The scan after updating however, I can completely understand.

What you could do (this is what I do as well because the scanning in this current build is a little too much compared to Smart Security or Endpoint Security for OS X) is to modify the Schedule as so:

  • Uncheck the first 'Startup file check' where it performs after 'User login'.
  • Uncheck 'Automatic update after user logon'.
  • Right click on the second 'Startup file check' where it performs after a 'Successful update', and click 'Edit...'. Click Next and set the 'Minimum task interval' to how often you want this scan to be performed (I set it to 1 day, so Cyber Security can only do the startup scan once a day), instead of after an update multiple times a day.

This way, you are eliminating the two unnecessary tasks (as the other two we left on will be performed after logging in anyway) and you can control how often you want that scan to be performed.

For testing, you can even uncheck both 'Startup file check' entries to see if that helps with the problems you were mentioning.

To really get this issue sorted, I suggest the following (when you have some time):

  • uninstalling the current build you have with the correct uninstaller,
  • restarting your Mac,
  • backup your Mac with Time Machine or however you wish,
  • download and install the OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update (Combo) again so all System files are as they should be just in case,
  • going into Disk Utility and repairing the permissions as well as verifying the disk (and boot into Recovery to repair if Disk Utility says to),
  • installing the latest build,
  • activating your product,
  • perform an update to get all the latest modules and VSD,
  • letting it do the first startup scan (better not to use your Mac while it does it to avoid any problems again), then after the scan is complete (when the update is complete, the spinning icon in the menubar should go back to the ESET icon and should then start the startup scan a few seconds after, meaning another spinning icon. The scan is complete when it goes back to the ESET icon for that second time),
  • make the adjusted to the Scheduler as mentioned above, then
  • restarting your Mac for the modules to fully take effect.

When you restart, there should not be an update or scan performed. An update will automatically be done after one hour since the last update process, and you should not have a startup scan until the next day (or however long you have set it for). Since there is still real-time protection, it isn't too bad that the scan isn't being done every few hours by default.

I'm hoping that the improvements, fixes and changes in the recent release of Endpoint Security for OS X will also be shown in the next build of Cyber Security (and Pro) sometime this year.

Will do. What I mean with fresh install is obviously if I don't have anything installed on Mac then Eset runs fine as it should. But when I start loading stuff, 2xDropbox, Syncplicity, Hazel, Cubby, Sugarsync, Sharepoint tool.... all of which I need for work... plus App Tamer, Opera browser (or Firefox or Chrome, it doesn't matter), Witch, Outlook, Evernote, TextExpander, Little Snitch etc....... it starts to add. I can't pinpoint any of these having issues with Eset.

I'll give it a try.

If it doesn't work I don't have many options. Avast is probably consuming more resources than Eset for sure and Sophos although decent reviews seems have potential security issue because running as root.

---

I have pretty decent 400MB read/write SSDs in both machines, plenty of space, system checks regularly through Onyx etc.., 16 GB and 8GB of memory, plenty of room.

Great, hopefully it helps. It would have been great to install ESET first and to install each application one at a time until you start to notice what you previously described... for example I've previously had issues with Sugarsync locking up my machine when it tries to run (before using ESET), and Little Snitch might interfere with ESET's Web, Email and Anti-phishing Protection (but maybe not... Cyber Security Pro provides a similar service built into their Firewall but unfortunately doesn't support wildcards in the location path at the moment).

That is why I am quite surprised at how much trouble you're having with ECS... I'm using a Late 2013 MacBook Pro and can comfortably run at least a dozen of apps including Adobe, Garageband, iMovie etc whilst an ESET Deep Scan is being performed with no issue as of now.

Just be careful with Onyx as performing some tasks require your Mac to rebuild and reindex things after (such as the Font cache, Spotlight Index or Icon Services) which will definitely put a strain on the Mac for a while until they are complete (consider not running those unless you experience a problem with that particular thing, eg. font issues).

Maybe check out the Activity Monitor to see any other apps using a lot of the CPU or RAM, and also open the Console to see if there are any entries on the sidebar (you may need to expand both 'User Diagnostic Reports' and 'System Diagnostic Reports' to see them) that show particular processes crashing, using too much CPU or more.

I got rid of SugarSync. The Mac version got worse and worse with every release.

For firewall, why don't you use Icefloor. I believe does better job with configuration than Eset CSP, if you are looking for wildcards and such.

Eset's webfiltering is using Proxy so it's not transparent which application is connecting.  Eset doesn't interfere with LittleSnitch, but it makes LittleSnitch completely pointless for connections that are forced through Eset proxy. You would have to block one by one by IP address, and that's not what LS is supposed to be designed for.

Just an update..

I tried to reinstall Eset and got again failure - installation failed message. However Eset got installed and it's running. This is weird. And that's after spending time manually cleaning the machine before. I am going to try installing version 4, just out of curiosity what it does. The version 4 used to run like an ice cream.
