I've been using ESET Internet Security and Thunderbird for years with no issue, but after the latest update anytime I load an email with external content in Thunderbird it takes about 5-15 seconds to load, my computer freezes while it does, and task manager shows ESET's CPU usage spike from 50-90%. Disabling real-time protection temporarily completely resolves this issue. Everything is up to date- any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Please carry on as follows:

  1. Temporarily disable Protected service in the advanced HIPS setup
  2. Reboot the machine
  3. Start logging with Procmon
  4. Launch Thunderbird and reproduce the issue
  5. Stop logging and save the log unfiltered in the PML format.
  6. Re-enable Protected service
  7. Reboot the machine.

You can also try uninstalling ESET and installing the latest v18.0.12 from scratch with default settings and see if it helps.

I have the same problem on 18.0.12 ESET version and thunderbird. Please fix it ASAP.

There is an ongoing thread on this issue at https://forum.eset.com/topic/43338-thunderbird-slowed-down-and-freezing-with-real-time-protection-enabled/. In order to keep everything in one place, we'll draw this one to a close.
