CSP V6 to V8 upgrade: Should I go clean-install or in-place upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Hi ESET people

I'm using the V6 version of ESET Cyber Security Pro for MacOS.

Now, anticipated new V8 version called ESET Cyber Security (merged with former ESET Cyber Security and former ESET Cyber Security Pro), compatible with MacOS Sequoia is finally released.

I want to upgrade from V6 to V8. But I have a question, SHOULD I uninstall V6 and then clean-install V8 or SHOULD I in-place upgrade to V8 without uninstalling V6?

I know uninstall/clean-install is not necessary and in-place upgrade works fine with minor updates, but this is a major upgrade, so I want ESET's official confirmation, before I get a trouble.

One more question.

I found a download page for ESET Cyber Security (new V8 version), but this is not a direct link and instead, it will be redirected to ESET user log in page.
https://www.eset.com/int/home/cyber-security/download/

Does ESET provide any download page to get a dmg file directly (not requiring log in), like this old V6 version?

Hello, you could upgrade ECSPro V6 by ECS v8.2.800.0. You can upgrade it directly in V6 product by version check functionality. ESCPro V6 should receive 8.2.800.0 by version check soon.

You should only uninstall V6 and install V8 if there are any issues after using upgrade process.

Thanks for the great help.

I'm using the latest version of ECSPro V6, but I can't see any notice of upgrade (V8) yet on my ECSPro Home screen, although ECS V8 has been already released. Should I wait some more days or weeks for the larger roll out of V8?

And one more question.

If I in-place upgrade from ECSPro V6 to ECS V8, would that the firewall function be enabled immediately before the product activation completed?

I am asking this because I read the online help of ECS V8 and it seems that the firewall will be disabled unless you finish activation of the product.

Here is the excerpt from ECS V8 Online Help:
'ESET Cyber Security features will be available based on the type of subscription purchased. Therefore in case you purchased a lower tier subscription without firewall, none of firewall features will be accessible within the application.'

Firewall is working after activation, this is right.  But during upgrade from v6 product, new product v8 is automatically activated by license from upgraded V6.

If you have non Pro license, or lowest tier subscription, firewall is not activated by such licenses. But you can still see it in product GUI. If you do not want to see it, e.g. you had ECS v6 and want v8 without firewall you can remove firewall from installed V8 during onboarding or by running onboarding wizard of V8 manually after V8 installation, and unselect firewall in component installation. The same way you can bring it back to product if you removed it previously.

Thanks. So, when upgrading (non clean-install) from ECSPro v6 (with valid licence) to ECS v8, the firewall is enabled before connecting to the internet for the activation... is it right?

No, firewall requires license, or subscription that allows it. It is transparent for user, he doesn't see it but in background it does following: during upgrade from v6 new product is installed, activated by v6 license and if it was ECSPro license firewall will start work after activation. User only see that v6 is removed and V8 started to work and firewall is ON, but as I wrote firewall started work after product activation.
