Clean install of Windows, and activation of Firewall

Recommended Posts

I went with a clean install of Win11Pro, with no MS account sign in and therefore setup was done with no internet access.

I installed a few programs along with ESET's Internet Security for an offline installation. I set up Eset's Firewall via Policy-based mode to ask for outgoing connections.

I then connected to the internet for the first time. For about 5 or so minutes, ESET's firewall was 'finalising' or 'initialising' itself -- i.e. by that I mean it seems to be activating itself with updates etc.

During this short time window (5 or so minutes), some other programs installed on the machine could easily access the internet, and thus were not stopped by the Policy-based rule set in ESET's firewall. It wasn't until after the 'finalising' of the updates did the Policy-based mode I set work -- i.e. asking for outbound connections etc.

Marcos suggested here to use Learning Mode for next time.

Yes, I am aware of those thing Marcos that you mentioned. Thanks.

But will pre-setting to Learning Mode avoid the above issue? The issue of the 5-minute or so time window for the Firewall to initialise (and thus not be active during that time).

Honestly I haven't heard about an issue where the firewall would take minutes to initialize. My understanding is that it could be theoretically caused only by Windows services taking long to start that the firewall depends on, such as the Base Filtering Engine service. I would recommend raising a support ticket for assistance with further troubleshooting.

Yeah, okay that could make sense. However, I do not encounter such an issue with other third-party firewalls I have used. For example, Fort Firewall works straight away, and shall block outgoing connections quick smart, with no waiting around for it to initialise. I shall raise a support ticket then. Thanks for your contributions on the forum (so many!)
