ESET In-Depth Scan Doesn't Finish

I have two computers: a Dell XPS 8930SE, Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (26100.2033) and a Dell XPS 15 7590, Windows 11 Pro 23H2 (22631.4317).

I "experimented" with the ESET "In-Depth" on both today.  Pardon me, but I am a newbie, having only purchased ESET Smart Security Premium a week ago.

With my desktop, the 8930, the In-Depth scan stopped counting objects scanned at 5,309,488, but the scanning continued, and the "Time Elapsed" continued to increment, as did the display showing which files were being scanned.  When the "In-Depth" scan stopped counting objects scanned, ESET started repeating scans of files already scanned.  I stopped that scan after 30 minutes because I had already seen that behaviour on my Dell laptop (7590), which I permitted to continue for a full hour.  Its "Objects Scanned" froze at 3,498,834 objects scanned, and then it started rescanning objects already scanned.  I also noted ESET was reporting corrupted .zip and .zipx files that are not.

I should also note that both computers successfully completed a standard ESET "Scan Your Computer."  I am suspicious that there is a bug in the "In-Depth" scan, but before I bother Technical Support, I was wondering whether this had already been reported or was normal behaviour.

I would appreciate advice as to how to proceed.  Thank you, and have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

This is a normal behavior when scanning objects like the registry, WMI or larger archives

When you installed Eset, did you allow the initial scan to fully complete? It's necessary for this scan to fully complete so existing files can be whitelisted which prevents then from being re-scanned on future on-demand scans.

An in-depth scan scans everything regardless of whether a file is whitelisted or not and also scans the registry and WMI repository completely. It may take even a day to compelete in-depth scans if there are many large archives on scanned disks. Also the current version follows links so some folders may be scanned repeatedly (e.g. c:\users and c:\documents and settings). I'd leave the scan running even if it seems to take long. V18, which is going to be released soon, will use smart following of links to prevent repetitive scan of symlinks / junction points.

@itman,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did let the initial scans complete on both computers, and I have successfully completed subsequent "Scan My Computer" scans on both devices.  I wonder why the ESET scanned file counter stops, though.  It did not update once in the last 30 minutes of the In-Depth scan of my laptop before I cancelled that scan.

@Marcos,

Thank you for the explanation.  I have used many AV solutions and done "Full Scans," but none have ever taken more than two hours.  I look forward to the release of V18.

By the way, as a newbie, I hope that I can ask stupid questions: is there any advantage to running monthly In-Depth scans?  It has always been my practice to run "Full Scans" monthly with my AV product at the time on Fridays after a "Patch Tuesday" and then run just "Quick Scans" every other Friday than a "Patch week" before doing my System Images.

My laptop has 108 GB of data and programs.  My desktop has about 185 to 190 GB of data and programs, depending on when I check disk storage, which I do daily.

I have to note that I was, and am, VERY IMPRESSED with the ESET Mobile Security product.  It took me directly to all of the Settings on my two phones that needed to be tweaked, unlike every other product I have ever used that demands the user find the settings themselves, if they can, and tweak them.

I also very much like the fact that mobile and PC versions update immediately upon boot without user intervention.  Other products delay their initial boot updates, so I would have to manually force an update before venturing out on the web.

ESET is a great product.  I am very happy with it.  Naturally, I am still finding my way around, but one thing I have noticed is that ESET has such a very small "footprint" using CPU and RAM resources.  I have never seen any AV program that is that sparing of computer horsepower.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

The In-depth scan profile has "Smart optimization" disabled by default which means that none of the whitelisting / caching mechanisms is used to speed up the scan. Also both the WMI repository and the registry are scanned thoroughly instead of just the common malware locations which may take hours. I would not recommend running an in-depth scan unless you encounter a problem while cleaning malware or if you occasionally have periods to run the scan for 1-2 days when the machine is unattended and idle. Other than that, I'd recommend using the "Smart scan" profile for on-demand scans.

@Marcos,

Thank you for your reply.  I really appreciate your recommendation to leave "In-Depth" scanning for dealing with the resolution of serious malware issues and not run it without cause.  That makes great sense to me.

Thank you again.  Have a great day.

Phil
