Random freezes and crashes by esets_daemon

Hello,

I'm experiencing random freezes and crashes by esets_daemon when using my Mac running Yosemite.

So far it has frozen my mac and crashed when:

  • Trying to edit Firewall Rules
  • Starting up my Mac (as soon as loading is complete)
  • Browsing the Internet (clicked on a webpage link)

When esets_daemon freezes, I'm unable to use my computer as it is frozen. After a while, esets_daemon crashes and then the Mac is usable again, but then protection or the GUI is no longer working due to esets_daemon not running anymore, forcing to restart the Mac.

OMG!!!! Please ESET; not again?????

Small update - just after over a day after reinstalling ECSP and I'm not experiencing any crashes or any major issues.

This time I did not enable Media Blocking or Parental Control at all, which may either/both/neither be the cause.

Edit: Still having issues. The esets_proxy 'broken pipe' logging issue and shutdown delay issue is still occurring.

Yes--we highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of ESET Cyber Security or ESET Cyber Security Pro (currently 6.0.14.0) when running these products on Yosemite.

Hi mceisel, I have been using 6.0.14.0 before the reinstall as well. The temporary solution at the moment is to not touch Media Blocking or Parental Control with 6.0.14.0 and Yosemite.

Edit: Never mind, I just restarted the Mac today and straight away ESET locked up and froze my entire Mac for over a minute, which meant some of ESET's processes stopping running, which then meant ESET's protection wasn't working, which finally meant that the ESET GUI wasn't responding. I needed to uninstall 6.0.14.0 until a solution is made. :(  As soon as ECSP uninstalled, everything started working as normal again.

Hey planet,

Hey planet,

The information in the following Knowledgebase article might be of use to you, as it includes some extra steps that might help your ESET product play nicer with Yosemite:

Thanks again for your help, but I was well aware of the KB article - I don't use iCloud on this Mac and I didn't have pre-release updates enabled (I always do a clean install of ECSP too).

The various issues and crashes have occurred on both a late 2013 MacBook Pro and an older 2009 MacBook Pro - The newer one has had a fresh install of Yosemite (complete erase of the hard drive first, no upgrade) and only a few third-party apps (like Adobe Creative Cloud), and the older one has had no third-party software installed except ECSP via a fresh install of Yosemite.

What's even stranger is that most issues I'm experiencing only occur after a few days of ECSP installed.

Thanks again @planet for your constant updating this thread. Very helpful to others. Cheers!

You're very welcome BDMSTUDIOS.

An update for this topic... I don't know if any modules have been updated recently or it's just being lucky, but after several reinstalls this latest install has been stable for the past five days with no crashes or freezes by esets_daemon. Basically, something seems to have solved the esets_daemon crashes for now.

Edit: Never mind, I am still having crashes.

Scrolling in my rulez editor, due to a connection error to my Synology using one of my iOS8 apps, I came across this strange fellow!(?) It blocks all outgoiing ports / al internet for the eset_proxy. Is it correct that this rulez handles all outgoing traffic thru ECSP?

Thanks.

This can happen when the rule doesn't detect the running application properly, instead showing esets_proxy as the application of the connection - this was happening in earlier versions and should be fixed in 6.0.14.0.

I'm assuming that it does handle the rules, along with Parental Control and Web Protection - but I could be wrong.

Small update - not sure if it's due to module updates (there has been updates for a number for modules since 6.0.14's release) but I have not experienced freezes or crashes by esets_daemon for a number of weeks now.

Will mark as solved for now until a new version is released with a confirmation in the release notes.

Unfortunately, these issues with esets_daemon have come back for me since the recent release of 6.0.14.3 - exactly the same as previously mentioned on this topic. Two days in a row now after installing, so far happening when trying to use Safari.

Returned in 6.1.12.0?

Sometimes http (not https!!!) traffic seems to be blocked. When I then check the Eset logs, I see the following errors:

23/11/15 19:11:22 Protoscan Proxy Agent Cannot get socket address: Invalid argument root
23/11/15 19:11:22 Protoscan Proxy Agent Cannot get socket address: Invalid argument root
23/11/15 19:11:22 Protoscan Proxy Agent Cannot get socket address: Invalid argument root

When I go into a terminal window and find the proxy daemon and kill it, all will be fine again for a few minutes:
ps -ax | grep esets_proxy
Result => 2829 ??         0:19.47 /Applications/.esets/Contents/MacOS/esets_proxy

First number is task ID, then I kill that task:
sudo kill -9 2829

Now I can surf again for a few minutes.

Since my upgrade to 6.1.12.0 my OS X output is getting worse. I experience some mayor performance issues / stalls / kernel panics / BCD's with this latest ESET build i.c.w. mostly online orientated programs:

1. iCloud Drive

2. OneDrive

3. KPN Backup Online

4. DropBox

Even the ESET CSP process got a red flag in Activity Monitor.  <_<

Can somebody please give me some directions how this is possible and even better, how to prevent this re-occuring? V5 was a great version for me i.c.w. with OS X 10.10.5.

TIA for your help, I just can't comprehend that an upgrade of the ESET software is such a downgrade in user benefits.

Cheers

BTW: ESET, could you please merge both subforums for Mac OS X (standard- & pro edition), or are there some mayor differences in both versions that there has to be two of them. I find it very confusing in reading this support site.

Looks like it's two steps forward, and several steps backwards.

I was going to install this release (and the Smart Security 9 on my Windows machines), both releases look like they have big issues. It's almost as if ESET's QA system seems to suffer from amnesia in that we keep seeing the same issues re-occur

I reported the issue and provided logs about this shortly after 6.1.12.0's release last month and also reflected these issues in 'Issues, Ideas & Feedback for ESET Cyber Security (and Pro)'. Still waiting for a solution, but they are looking into it.
