In my recent case, Windows Update 0x80070643 was caused by this;

due to a hardware malfunction in the middle of update.

Tried all solutions known for this error to no avail and wasted a lot of time doing so. I finally performed a Windows in-place upgrade via .iso download which fixed the problem.
