Eset Smart Security And Eset Nod32 Antivirus 8 Beta Available

- Chrome/FF/Opera -> Incognito/private browser window called Eset Porn Zone

I hope this is a joke....

Not only that. I believe the Whole list is a joke directed at the "I want more, the more the better" audience.

I hope so.

Hello there,

I agree with the developer, the interface .. It is not important, do you use the product with the launch interface permanently?

The interface of ESET products, is a very good model of ergonomics.

Concerning the evolution of version 8, I am surprised that additional protection against the Ransomware, is not included.
(A function, for example, a specific remedy this kind of infection)

I also regret that parental control is still bare.

Regarding the "tray", the current icon is much more "serious" than the former.

On the "pro" machine that's less "wacky".

Vigen.

We made improvements regarding ransomware (LockSreens) to v7 already. Personally I haven't heard of virtually any LockScreen issues since then.

Hello,

This is just in case, if a sample code with a particular offense can pass ... That the "Anti-Ransomware" routine manages the release of the explorer, the Appdata folders etc etc

Have you fixed the issue with Windows 8.1 telling Eset has stopped working? Happens like ten times a day with version 7.

I'm using both version 7 and 8 beta on two different Windows 8.1 machines and have not had any issues with Smart Security.  :)

Just to give my opinion on the performance of the system with NOD32.

Here I have a performance drop using the Samsung EVO 500GB SSD with NOD32 version 7 and real-time protection enabled.

Protection Enabled

Protection Disabled

So there really is a drop in performance.

Did you run a first time scan on this SSD before running that benchmark ? And are you using V8 ??

Strange thing for me was that my benchmark actually slowed down when protection disabled

Protection Enabled

Yes, first scan completed, and I use the Version 7.

At least you could detect the same problem.

A colleague of mine has a similar Samsung SSD disk but didn't encounter any performance issue after installing v8. Does renaming C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ehdrv.sys and C:\Windows\System32\drivers\eamonm.sys in safe mode, one at a time, make a difference?

Our opinion is that bringing new protection features is much more important that changing icons and gui a bit. Maybe some vendors make new versions with minor face-lifts and then offer upgrade for a fee but that's not the path ESET wants to follow. Our aim has always been to bring state-of-the-art protection to our users, keep them away from threats endangering their digital worlds and to continually work on improving protection as malware writers try hard to find ways how to evade protection.

For good sake, please revert the Eset logo as introduced in v7 with v6 i.e.

from attachicon.gifcCgvCzCs.pngto  attachicon.gifd3ZpKxk.png

The icon is fine and helps identify the product. Every company on the planet uses a company logo, i cant see why Eset should be any different  ;)

There's nothing wrong with sporting ESET logo with an 'e' but IMO, the latter one looks more premium. ;)

@Developers |

could you please Add an option/workaround so that we can change the the said logo as per our needs? ATM, this is not possible as the Logo File is digitally signed and while making any changes to it breaks the data integrity.

 Few Suggestions :

  • Please remove the 'Activate your Product' option from the 'Tray Icon' context menu once the product is activated using valid license key.
  • Make ESET GUI scalable so that it doesn't looks too small on large displays like on mine 27" monitor it looks very -very small also mentioned by fellow members/users. I am not saying it's not scalable but present GUI scalability is not something which holds or remembers custom positioning & reverts to default position after system restart..
  • Automatically add Connectify Process, Network Services etc. (shown in below screenshot) to trusted Rules & Zones as all of these processes/services are digitally signed. As per my understanding they don't possess any threat (The reason for my assumption is truly based on results after studying/testing various AV/ Internet Security Suites and by any means they don't tend to block these processes).. By doing so, users don't have to wonder why they are not able to connect to Connectify HotSpot. :o
  • Make SSL Scanning a bit more effective so that it doesn't blocks windows updates. ATM, if SSL Scanning/protection is enabled, when an user checks for Windows Updates it (SSL Scanning) blocks the traffic to Windows Servers which results in Windows Update Error & doesnt lets users to update their system to latest Windows Hotfixes/features. To overcome this, one has to either disable the SSL Scanning or by moving on to Manual/interactive mode. Just for the record, setting the SSL scanning to manual/interactive mode is not the best practice to follow as it results in too much human efforts. It's just my perspective cant say about other users.

@Arakasi

talking abt contacting the Customer support, Well this reminds me about magic moment that once I had with Your Esteemed Customer Support who didn't bothered to reply with the root cause and resolution for ESET GUI Crashing --  whenever launched either from Start Screen or Tray Icon (issue was persistent when Windows 8 was launched - For me only workaround that has worked was by Reformatting the Windows), even though your Tech Support took my system for a TeamViewer ride, then asked to upload the dump files on a FTP Server, after performing the said task the guy on telephonic conversation said that I'll be notified about the problem source & possible solution in next 3-5 working days but till now never heard from them. Promptly waited for 2 weeks, continuously followed the Chain Mails to hear something from you guys so that issue can be fixed but like as I mentioned they never replied & the only resort was Complete system format.

Let Bygones be bygones. Hoping for the best possible Experience & Top Notch Protection with the upcoming release. :)

Regarding SSL and Windows Updates. FYI  :)

A new Internet protection module 1140 will address this issue that was caused by an incompatible change Microsoft has recently made to WUA.

AFAIK, not many languages versions (if any at all except English) are released during the Beta, you will probably have to wait for the Final release of V8 wich will be available in the usual languages found on the website.

Hello,

ESET's protection capabilities are constantly enhanced via module updates. In many cases, this allows ESET to improve detection (and cleaning and bug fixes and performance and other issues) without always having to resort to releasing new versions of its software--although there are situations when the base software has to get updated as well.

As one example of this, check out the recording of the 2014 Mid-Year Threat Review webcast, where at about 35 minutes into the presentation there is a screenshot showing the new warning dialog for notifying people when their router may have been compromised. I am not sure how many of our competitors would be able to add similar technology without having to issue a product update; probably not too many, I'd guess.

Do not confuse the marketing of threat protection with the effectiveness of threat protection. ESET is focused on protecting its users against real world threat, and not buzzword parity games.

Oh, and if you will recall, in previous years ESET has not updated the UI for beta versions until RC status was hit.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

2 new protection capabilities? Nope only one, Exploit already exists and never seen it working. i trust more in EMET than ESET Exploit blocker.

Version 8 = Joke of the year.

Thanks for the big innovation.

Hello,

Update notifications within the beta version are handled through it's UI, however, it would not be a bad idea to keep an eye on the beta test portal at hxxp://beta.eset.com as well as this forum.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

siljaline, my Canadian buddy tipped me off to it last night and I installed it and it seems fine.

I haven't yet studied all the posts here but how are we informed with the beta updates? Is it done by the program itself?

Hello,

ESET has made incremental improvements to the user interfaces of its products since the launch of v7 in 2007. These have been done when a new version has been released, and have been mostly to improve usability (reduce number of steps to perform actions, make messages easier to understand, provide better help within the program and so forth). Of course, there have also been changes to things like color palette and graphical elements (new icons, etc.) to refresh them for the new version, but these types of changes are relatively minor in scope.

While ESET does do a lot more studying of how customers use its product and spend more time changing its UI than when I first arrived at the company in 2005—yes, they even do usability studies now—that is still a small effort relative to the amount expended on the products themselves, whether its core engine development, detection, QA, etc.

The reason for this is quite simple: Making massive changes to your user interface does not automatically improve it, simplify it, or otherwise "make it better." All it does is, in fact, make your product more confusing and difficult to use for your existing customers.

While I do agree that it is important to address usability issues and make products easier to use, I think one is better off making incremental kinds of changes, so it doesn't cause a cognitive disconnect for users.

One recent example of this is a certain commercial operating system vendor from the Pacific-Northwest, which recently made changes to the user interface for their consumer operating system. This was really a very small change, showing one screen instead of another, but the reaction in the marketplace hasn't exactly been great. Most of their customers are staying with the previous version of their OS, or upgrading to that if running an older version.

So, in a nutshell, let me summarize: You don't break your user interface just for the sake of changing things. That pretty much never works out well, unless your UI was something totally horrible and wrong to begin with [and, yes, that happens--I once worked for a company where I had to tell its customers "click and drag on the stained glass chili pepper in order to increase or decrease volume" because that's what their UI had in it for a volume control). If your UI is half-way decent to begin with, you'll be able to manage it though a process refinement, making it successively "better" (easier to use, easier to understand, Section 508 compliant, or however your organization defines that) with each release. If you have to throw out your UI wholesale and begin anew with each release, then I'd say there's something wrong--or at least, dysfunctional--in your organization.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

OMG! It's so funny! Nothing new in the "new" version! GUI is the same from version 3 / 2007 / till now. ESET is NOTHING like it used to be in the past! Now your team is so greedy. You always offend other AV vendors but they make big improvements to their products each year, not like you. It's a shame!

Hello,

Microsoft introduced a feature in Windows 8 where it will enable Windows Defender if no other anti-malware software is detected as being on the system. The exact behavior varies a little between Windows 8 and 8.1, but the underlying idea is the same: At no instance should your computer be unprotected. I cannot really fault Microsoft for that; they really are trying to clean up the Windows environment. In any case, Windows Defender will cleanly disable itself once a recognized anti-malware software package is installed, so there won't be any issues with conflicts, performance and so forth.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

I'm very happy to read Eset are focused on better/new protection features with ESS v8 and not adding superfluous bells and whistles. Installed the beta over the top of version 7 without an issue; Windows 8.1 decided to activate Windows Defender for a tiny period which may just be a Windows 'thing' as no AV is installed whilst ESS v7 is removed and v8 is installed.

Hello,

To answer the specific comments about usability and web reputation:

  • ESET's software does not incorporate voice recognition or speech synthesis, however, you can toggle "Text Mode" in the ESET Graphic User Interface on and off by pressing Ctrl+G. In Text Mode, the user interface presents an interface that is "friendly" to screen reading programs.
  • I would like to point out that ESET does warn you if you visit a website containing Potentially Unwanted Content. And, as with detection of Potentially Unwanted Applications, the option to proceed is there if you really want to visit the site (or run that application, etc.).
I will leave feedback on the other feature requests, including, ahem, "ESET Porn Zone," to my colleagues. :)

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Foolish people crying about little changes, I know the changes you want so let me list them for you.

Integrations needed for Eset:

- Chrome/FF/Opera -> Incognito/private browser window called Eset Porn Zone

- Windows on-screen keyboard -> prevent keyloggers called Eset Smart Keyboard

- Google Voice -> voice commands on settings called Eset Handicap Mode

- LastPass -> auto complete user credentials called Eset Smart Pass

- Web of Trust -> website reputation called Eset Smart Reputation

- CCleaner -> clear browser history, cookies, and cache called Eset Smart Cleaner

- AdBlock Plus -> block ads called Eset Smart Blocker

@Developers | Suggestion : :rolleyes:

  • How about adding an option or tweaking the ESS Firewall in such a way which allows to add a range of uneven IP addresses in a single step (while creating a rule) instead of manually adding them one by one.
e.g. If someone wants to configure the ESS Firewall with below shared IP addresses i.e.
  • 50.19.71.56,50.02.51.88,89.02.56.44,75.97.18.13,90.27.36.14,89.11.249.99,16.51.153.255,101.198.12.78,154.215.87.058,216.205.18.85,

In such scenarios, user has to add them one by one which is very time consuming. IMO, instead there should be an option which allows any IP range to be added in single step like as is present in Windows Firewall Control (third party firewall app which makes the tedious job of configuring the built in Windows Firewall a lot easier).
