How to recover bookmarks after activating Secure All Browsers

Recommended Posts

I chose the new "Secure All Browsers"

When I opened the browser today it opened my regular Chrome windows and not the stand alone Secure Chrome window.
I had no access to all my banking/creditcard/webbrokers bookmarks.

Never in my widest dreams did I think choosing Secure All Browsers was going to:
1. Not still have the nice feature of a seperate secure chrome window
2. Not have access to all your Bookmarks

What an inconvenience, and no warning of this would happen.

To revert back or turn this feature on or off its under Setup/SecurityTools/ Secure All Browsers
If you turn it back off it will revert back to how it was.

It's too bad we couldn't have the best of both worlds as I like having it separate.

If you are ok without the separate Secure Browser Window then here is how to get/merge your bookmarks.

The simple advanced user method (not detailed)
Turn off the Secure All Browsers in Setup/SecurityTools/ Secure All Browsers
Open your Secure Browser and export your bookmarks
Close the Secure Browser
Turn Secure browser back on
Import you bookmarks from Bookmarks/Bookmark Manager - DO NOT select "Import Bookmarks and Settings"

Here is another way novice way and does not require you to turn Secure All Browsers on or off:

This procedure was done for Chrome on  Win 10 64 Pro

Step 1
Close Chrome

Step 2
Created a new folder in Documents "ESET Bookmarks"

Step 3
In File Explorer go to C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Smart Security\OPP\S-1-5-21-4292647954-680486543-2982522831-1001\EsetOPPChromeProfile\Default

For Firefox it might be:

C:\ProgramData\ESET\ESET Smart Security\OPP\S-1-5-21-4292647954-680486543-2982522831-1001\EsetOPPChromeProfile\bookmarkbackups

Step 4
Copy "Bookmarks" file to your new folder in Documents

Step 5
Rename "Bookmarks" to anything such as "BookmarksESET"

Step 6
Copy "BookmarksESET" and paste it into C:\Users\YourHandle\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Step 7
Rename the existing "Bookmarks" to "BookmarksOLD"
Then rename = "BookmarksESET" to "Bookmarks"

Step 8
Open Crome

Step 9
Press those 3 dots top right and Export Bookmarks, save the file in that new folder you created in Documents.

Step 10
Close Chrome

Step 11
Go back to C:\Users\YourHandle\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Step 12
Rename "Bookmarks" to "BookmarksESET"
Then rename "BookmarksOLD" to "Bookmarks"
Reversing what you had done earlier

Step 13
Open Crome

Step 14
Press those 3 dots top right and go to Bookmarks/Bookmark Manager
DO NOT select "Import Bookmarks and Settings"

Step 15
Press those 3 dots top right and go to Import Bookmarks
choose the exported html file you did from the new folder you created in Documents
This will create a folder called Imported, your shorcuts will be in there.

Step 16
Press those 3 dots top right and go to Bookmarks/Bookmark Manager
You will see the Imported folder, inside that is the Bookmarks folder, move the bookmark files to your desired location.

The secured browser creates and used its own profile. While I haven't tried myself, I assume that enabling cloud sync should do the trick.
