Appears that's the case:

I don't have any issues with this, but some might that expect ekrn.exe to be using ports 80/443.

As of v14.1 ESET Push Notification Service is used (https://help.eset.com/protect_admin/80/en-US/epns.html).

Can we disable push notifications and the permanent connection?

Well, you can theoretically block the port 8883 on a firewall, however, it would cause certain operations where communication with ESET's servers is performed to take hours instead of being done virtually instantly.
