ESET SysRescue Live hangs during boot

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I tried running the ESET SysRescue Live ISO image, and my system hung on a blank gray window as soon as I selected the Run ESET SysRescue option.

I strongly suspect that it is related to my NVidia RTX 3080 GPU. However, here is the rest of the interesting stuff in my PC:

  • MSI MEG X570 ACE motherboard (AMD)
  • Ryzen 3900X CPU
  • MSI RTX 3080 Extreme Gaming X Trio GPU
  • 64 GB DDR RAM

Does anybody know why I can't boot the SysRescue media? Is there a workaround?

Thanks

AzJazz

If your computer has a Windows 8.x or Windows 10 operating system, it probably uses UEFI mode to start the operating system. To use ESET SysRescue, switch to Legacy BIOS mode first.

If that doesn't resolve the issue I'm afraid that troubleshooting issues with starting Linux on a particular machine are beyond our support. If you create a bootable USB with Ubuntu or another Linux distro, does the system boot up alright?

I tried Legacy BIOS and UEFI, both instances hang during the boot process. The Legacy BIOS did bring up a text menu momentarily before it hung with a black screen with a flashing cursor.

I have had luck getting Ubuntu and other Linux distros running on my PC - but there has sometimes been an issue with some of my more modern Nvidia RTX GPUs where the open-source nouveau drivers don't recognize the Nvidia GPU. This feels similar.

I have been able to get past this by being able to modify the grub boot options with a nomodeset option to keep the distro from scanning for the graphics configuration, but I couldn't find an way with ESET SysRescue to modify the boot options.

There are a lot of folks out there with Nvidia RTX GPUs that will face this same issue, so it would be nice if there was a solution available.

Thanks!
