Usual issue with non-existent downloads or downloads that exist but can't be downloaded (Windows dependent)

Recommended Posts

Good morning

I have the usual issue with ESET detecting Win 10 updates that:

A) Do not exist

B) Are shown as optional updates but once one tries to install them, they won't be downloaded/installed. (I assume this latter issue is not ESET-related). in This case, i have a Canon driver that appears on both Eset and W10 but can't be downloaded or installed.

Apart from switching off optional updates, is there any other way to fix this on the ESET side?

Thanks

The list of available updates is provided by the operating system. ESET doesn't do anything on its own, it just gets this list and displays available updates.

Are you stating that you cannot download the Canon driver via Win Optional Update selection?

I had this issue with a few updates. One I was able to fix by finding the device in device manager and updating via there

I will also note that in instances like this, you're better off just downloading any driver updates from the manufacturer's web site: https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART116480

Alternatively, go to Windows Update Catalog web site: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx . Enter "Windows 10 Canon" in the search bar. Displayed with be a listing of all Canon printer drivers available for your printer model. Select the appropriate latest driver available, download it, and directly install it.

Note: The Windows Update Catalog web site lists all available Canon printer drivers; many of which are not the latest version. Verify that the driver is actually newer that the one currently installed prior to downloading it.

The latest canon driver from Canon dates back to 2016. The driver on W10 dates back to 2018. I will see the Win catalog as per your suggestion.

Thanks a million.

Anyways, no joy with the CAB file.

Did you try via device manager. Going through all the printer stuff in there and searching for updates on each

Yes i do that regularly on my Lenovo laptop because, strangely, there are a lot of updates coming through that channel.

Scroll down to the section titled "Installing .CAB driver package" in this article: https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/install-cab-msu-updates-mu-catalog/

That's what i did...you can also add a registry key to add an "Install" item in the right click menu that is designed for CAB files. Neither the manual procedure with DISM on an elevated shell nor the other process (which is the same, just automated through the new item in the menu) worked. I also tried to change name of the CAB, move the CAB from the "Download" directory to "C:\", re-download the file, make sure it was for WIN8 and upper versions, etc. It just does not work. The below is what happens when i point at the CAB from DevMan. It sees it but it considers it as invalid. And it has been downloaded from the the WinUpdate website.

Windows is informing you the driver is not properly signed. Do you have Secure Boot enabled on the device? If so, only Microsoft signed drivers are allowed. Assumed is the Canon printer driver is not so signed.

Also note that Microsoft is sloppy with what it posts in the Win Update Catalog and often doesn't fully vet what is loaded there for device comparability.

Secure boot is active and can't be disabled.

I just checked the Canon web site: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/support-inkjet-printer/mg-series/pixma-mg3022/pixma-mg3022?tab=drivers_downloads

Appears they issued a security patch for the G3000 series on 8/31/2020. I suspect this might be the reason for the initial Win Update notifications you were receiving. You might want to download this from the Canon web site for your G3000 printer; note there a two different models listed, so select the right one.

Appears they issued a security patch for the M3000 series on 8/31/2020. I suspect this might be the reason for the initial Win Update notifications you were receiving. I went to check two days ago and they only had a 2016 driver. Let me make another search

They don't show anything for G3000. When I enter this in the search window, all that is displayed is MG3000 results.

The latest update for my current location dates back to 2016 https://tw.canon/zh_TW/support/0100767212

Suspect the G3000 series in the U.S. in marketed as the MG3000 series. In any case, appears you need a Chinese language supported driver.

I found a Canon G3000 driver dated May 21, 2019 along with the security patch dated Aug. 31, 2020 here: https://sg.canon/en/support/PIXMA G3000/model

Install driver first and reboot. Hopefully, there will be no issues w/Secure Boot. If there is, you will have to go into Win 10 recovery environment and disable driver sig. enforcement plus possibly Secure Boot: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-driver-signature-enforcement-windows. Upon successful boot into Win 10, then roll back the printer driver to the previous version.

Finally, install the security patch.

-EDIT- Looks like above downloads can be had in Chinese here: https://hk.canon/zh_HK/support/pixma g3000/model

In regards to Win Update driver notifications :

Quote

Should you install Windows 10's Optional Driver updates?

Microsoft moved driver updates in Windows 10 from the Device Manager to the Optional Updates section of the Windows Updates settings application this year after the company announced the change in 2019.

The answer is relatively simple, and Microsoft provides a short explanation on the page:

If you have a specific problem, one of these drivers might help. Otherwise, automatic drivers will keep your drivers up to date.

The optional drivers should not be installed on devices that don't have any issues or problems that may be associated with the devices that the listed drivers power, e.g. Wi-Fi connectivity or the printer. They are to be ignored if everything works as expected.

https://www.ghacks.net/2020/09/27/should-you-install-windows-10s-optional-driver-updates/

In this case what appears to have happened is a typical Microsoft "chicken or the egg" bork scenario. The driver update offered appears to be the Canon printer security patch. It also appears the security patch only applies to the most recent 2019 driver available.
