Problem with removal of preexisting antivirus

Recommended Posts

I recently had to reformat and reinstall windows 10. When I tried reinstalling ESET and got to t he point where the old antivirus must be uninstalled, I of course used the uninstall program recommended by ESET for Macafee. It started and froze. I then tried the ESET uninstall program, but had the same problem. I submitted a support request and got the reply to  use the recommended uninstall  program, which I had done.  Since I was  not able to install ESET, I decided to install another antivirus program - Malawarebytes Premium, just to be safe.

What do you recommend to do at this point?

Long thread on uninstalling McAfee with their uninstaller tool and it freezing here: https://community.mcafee.com/t5/Consumer-General-Discussions/McAfee-Remover-frozen/td-p/525237/highlight/true . Try what is shown in the following posting first:

Try the below steps to remove McAfee

  • Run MCPR
  • Check if it stops at MFP
  • Open Task Manager
  • Check for “Sediag.exe” process
  • Right click Sediag.exe and End task
  • MCPR will continue to remove McAfee
  • Reboot and continue

Siva

If this doesn't work, try what is given in the posting following this.

There is also this "tidbit" in regards to the McAfee removal tool:

MCPR cleans up only the components needed for reinstallation. It is not designed to clean up 100% of components.

Appears to me that McAfee should have been uninstalled using Win uninstall apps feature; i.e. Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program.

If you reinstalled Win 10, did you also reinstall McAfee LiveSafe afterwards?

Or did McAfee come per-installed on the device originally, and you used the PC manufacturer's recovery disks to reinstall Win 10? If so is this how McAfee LiveSafe ended up being reinstalled on the device?
