GTA V / Online Crash because of ESET Internet Security or EIS

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been using ESET Internet Security for years now and I have never faced such issue. But for the first time, I have faced the issue with ESET Internet Security (EIS) where they are some how blocking GTA V from connecting to the GTA Online Session which causes GTA V to crash.

I can confirm this 100% because when ESET Internet Security (EIS) is completed Uninstalled from the System: GTA V and GTA Online works fine.

When ESET Internet Security (EIS) is installed on the System: GTAV crashes.

How can I confirm this 100% for sure?

I have replicated the same issue with two systems by installing ESET Internet Security (EIS) and then uninstalling it.

I have tried disabling the Firewall ofESET Internet Security (EIS).

I have tried disabling the full ESET Internet Security (EIS) Protection.

I did add the GTAV files and all the related .exe files as an exception.

^ None of those helped me apart from uninstalling the ESET Internet Security (EIS).

It has been happening for all the copies of GTA V bought via. Steam, Epic Games and Rockstar Games Launcher. (Regardless of where you buy it, if you have ESET Internet Security (EIS) installed, GTA V will crash).

One thing I can mention: GTA V is both Single Player and Multiplayer Game.

GTA V doesn't crash with ESET Internet Security (EIS) when I am playing Single Player Mode.

But it crashes only when GTA V tries to connect with the Online Servers that is GTA Online. (When ESET Internet Security (EIS) is Installed)

Log File is Attached and Here is the Web Copy of the log file: https://pastebin.com/raw/FLmUy6bX

P.S.: I am ready to provide any details you wish to ask, but please patch this up. There is something really wrong with your software at this point.

Thanks.

There appears to be a problem with GTA and EIS: https://forum.eset.com/topic/19306-eset-internet-security-problem/ . However, I could not find anyone having a current issue with GTA that was using NOD32.

Your posting references but NOD32 and EIS interchangeably. They are separate products and it appears you are using EIS?

Since it appears the prior above linked issue between EIS and GTA was never resolved in the forum, I suggest you do the same as recommended there. That is, open a support ticket with your local in-country Eset technical support concern.

Does temporarily disabling protocol filtering in the advanced setup make a difference? If not, what about disabling HIPS and rebooting the machine?

Hello, I'm sorry for mis-typing the wrong products.

The Right ESET Product in concern is Eset Internet Security. Sorry for using ESET Nod as the product name.

Secondly, ESET in my region is handled by third-party Indian company which I am sure about won't give 2 cents about this issue and that's exactly why I have come here to have some direct eset people to take care of it. (Gaming isn't a serious topic/concern in my region/country)

It isn't like GTA is a small game and ESET is a small company. But I hope you know what I mean to say.

I value my time a lot. I am ready to communicate with anyone directly from ESET and share the information rather than talking to third-party support.

I tried Detection Exclusion and Firewall Exclusion. Nothing worked!

I am not sure how does Protocol Filtering works, If you could tell me more? I would do it.

Thanks

A memory violation error is occurring on attempted program startup of GTA5.exe. Specifically, it is a memory access violation error which you can read about here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/5303524/what-exactly-is-the-scope-of-access-violation-0xc0000005 . Based on what is shown, it is "a stretch" to assume Eset is the cause of this but rather the GTA5.exe process itself is trying to access perhaps kernel memory locations or the like, it does not have the required privileges to do so.

Since you only receive this in game multi-player mode, this also could be a indication of malicious remote access activities. This error can also occur for page file access violations. Make sure you have enough physical memory to support multi-game mode. Or allocate additional Win virtual memory if you are managing its size versus the OS. Note that when EIS was uninstalled, enough memory might have been freed to run in multi-player mode w/o issue.

Assuming you are running Win 10, open Event Viewer -> Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows. Open both the CodeIntegrity and Security-Mitigations logs and look for entries related to GTA5.exe and this 0xc0000005 memory access violation error.

Hi, Thanks for the reply @itman But if you could guide me a little on how can we solve these issues?

1. How do we solve this or what is required to do here? ^

2. I don't know how to increase or allocate more/additional virtual memory. I'm on Windows 8.1 (Updated to the max as per Microsoft releasing the updates).

Please, I am looking to solve this issue with you and with your help. Let me know if you need anything more, I will share.

I am on Windows 8.1 64 Bit.

16 GB RAM

GTX 970 4 GB Graphics Card

Intel 4790K Processor.

I don't overcloak anything.

I have enough SSD/HDD on my system.

Everything I use is licensed/official. Nothing pirated/third-party/mods/cracks and stuff.

Let me know.

Thanks.

With 16 GB of memory, this issue is related to having sufficient memory resources.

Your posted screen shows that Windows Defender real-time protection is running in addition to EIS. WD should have been disabled when EIS was installed. Having two AV real-time solutions running at the same time might be related to this issue. Does the time for this log entry correspond to when EIS was uninstalled?

Again, I see nothing directly related to Eset as the source of this issue. If Eset was the source, the issue would have manifested in single game player mode.

At this point, I would recommend you create a Process Monitor log for @Marcos to review. Refer to this on how to do this: https://support.eset.com/en/kb6308-using-process-monitor-to-create-log-files . Only perform the activities listed in the "Gather Process Log" section. Start logging just prior to starting a GTA multi-player session; i.e. prior to GTA5.exe starting. Stop logging after the 0xc0000005 memory access violation error occurs. Post the log as an attachment to your posting or to a file sharing web site if the compressed log file exceeds 50 MB. Then instead, post the link to the file sharing web site download.

Hi, Yes. EIS is currently uninstalled that is why Windows Defender is in action now.

It is 100% because of EIS. You can believe it or not. But I can reproduce the issue anytime you want.

I will do this tomorrow since it's late here. I will re-install the EIS and post it here or tell me how to send it to him.

Moreover, You were saying about Virtual Memory, that isn't the issue or I can still do something about it?

Thanks.

Another thing you can try is to manually enable "Gamer Mode" in EIS prior to starting a GTA multi-player session as shown in the below screen shot if EIS does not do so automatically. Then manually set it back to the pause setting after the multi-player session is finished.

Eset_Gamer.thumb.png.30f15c464e5de738ed9d3bba5b82c67b.png

Additionally if Gamer Mode currently auto enables at the start of a GTA multi-player session, set it not to do so prior to session start up per the below screen. Now test if GTA runs w/o issue.

With 16 GB of real memory, virtual memory really should not be an issue.

Refer to the below screen shot on how to view/change virtual memory settings. With the amount of memory you have, I would just leave it at default setting which is Windows OS manages its size dynamically.

If playing with EIS Gamer Mode settings does not solve the issue, it appears you have no issue when using Windows Defender. WD does not have a Web Filtering component as EIS has. Prior to starting a GTA multi-player session, temporarily disable EIS Web Access protection. If that eliminates the problem, at least we have isolated the EIS component causing the issue.

Hi.

1. I forgot to mention. I did try Gamer Mode. It didn't help me.

2. Yes, with WD. It doesn't cause issues all the time. But with EIS, it's 10/10 probability that game will crash as soon as I go for MP.

Moreover, no matter what I do in EIS. I have tried turning off the Firewall of EIS and any other pause ability EIS has including Gamer Mode. Nothing helped.

The only thing which seemed to make things much much better was uninstalling the EIS for GTAV.

With EIS: MP doesn't work at all. Not even once.

Without EIS: MP works.

C Drive is OS. It was system managed.

But rest of the drives were not. So I simply made them System Managed myself last night.

Please if you could escalate this issue with the EIS team or something because EIS is one thing that was causing the issues.

I cannot leave my system this much vulnerable without EIS for a long-time. I'm very much concerned about the safety.

I'm sorry to repeat the questions but you didn't answer them clearly. Did you try disabling protocol filtering and it didn't make any difference?

Did disabling HIPS and rebooting the machine made no difference either?

Add an Eset real-time scanning performance exclusion for F:\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\GTA5.exe per the below screen shot and retest.

I will also add there is a very long thread on GTAForums: https://gtaforums.com/topic/934020-gta-v-crashes-with-error-code-0xc0000005-help/ . Also ditto in the nVidia forum and other sources. All pointing to nVidia driver glitches with GTA. Another issue source was VPN usage. Why this manifests in muti-player mode with EIS installed is still a mystery but I still believe EIS is still not the "main culprit" for this issue.

Hi, I am 101% sure that ESET is causing the issue because I had ESET uninstalled for 3-4 days (since my last reply) and I was able to play 20-30 hours easily without any crash.

But I just installed ESET and it's again causing the crash.

Please if you can stop justifying ESET and start working on what's in ESET is causing the issue. Else, I might be forced to stop using ESET if ESET is even blocking the trusted publisher (which makes me doubt that ESET doubts multi-million dollar worth of game). If your software is blocking top-10 games of all the lifetime, I think someone's is not in his/her right mind to do this. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games)

I have confirmed with two of my friends who use KasperSky, they aren't facing the same issue.

I would like to again mention this. I have been using ESET for many years now. I have never faced this issue before, it has been happening in recent months. I came forward now because now I have caught the reason perfectly.

Game works fine on any kind of platform/any hardware/any PC without ESET involved.

I picked this one up over at the Minecraft forum and its the last thing I am going to recommend to try. Once all the necessary firewall rules have been created for GTA, you can set Eset firewall back to Automatic mode.

That said, I am done with this thread.

Quote

ESET Security has a feature that interferes with Minecraft’s ability to connect to Mojang’s servers. To fix it, follow these instructions here, and set the mode to Interactive. Then, open the launcher and try to log into Minecraft. ESET will open a window asking what to do, press EXCLUDE.

That didn't work either.

Thank you.

Please if someone from ESET could help me with this issue?

Edit:

I uninstalled EIS again.

I have just purchased 1 year subscription of KasperSky Internet Security 2020.

I did nothing additional to do anything like exclusions or disable. No manual settings, just straight forward install and activated the license.

Game is working fine, Loading everything perfectly. No Crash!

That doesn't mean, I am stopping here. Even though I paid to KasperSky for 1 year already. I don't want to retain with them infact, I want to shift to ESET.

Reason I bought KasperSky is because it's been around week and we have not come up to any progressive conclusion. I've given enough proof that ESET is causing the issue. I cannot keep my security at risk because ESET is not acknowledging it at all.

If we can fix the concern, I will move back to EIS HAPPILY! (I trust ESET for a decade now).

My License with ESET is pending to expire in 2021 (Late around November). Please also let me know how you can extend or pause that so that I don't loose my days because your software being the culprit is making me not using your services temporarily.

Proof that GTA Online works fine with KasperSky (1 Year Subscription and not Trial).

Did you try disabling hips and adding a performance exception?

Your best bet might be creating a support ticket via the website as this can be tracked

You can read this, I did disable HIPS.

Support is from Third Party in my region/country. I wish if ESET could make one for me directly with the ESET's Direct Team.

Also, I am waiting for your input @Marcos

P.S.: Played around 5-10 hours with KasperSky Internet Security Installed on PC. GTA Online is working flawlessly.

I still could not find an answer to the question if temporarily disabling protocol filtering makes a difference. Please answer this.

It could be that SSL filtering or protocol filtering per se is interfering with the communication in a way that is not expected by the game and it crashes. The other AV may not be filtering SSL communication or http(s) communication is scanned differently and thus the issue doesn't manifest.

It has in the past:

Quote

Its the Protocol filtering in ESET SS8! Go to options > web and email > PROTOCOL FILTERING > excluded applications. Make sure that the rockstar subprocess.exe, GTA5.exe and GTA5LAUNCHER.exe are all selected to be excluded from protocol filtering. After adding these exclusions I can now connect to GTA5 Online!!

https://steamcommunity.com/app/271590/discussions/0/613956964591355899/?ctp=2#c594820656469302670

However back in 2015, Eset was using a network adapter mini-port filter whereas now it uses the Windows Filtering Platform.

Ok so @ajgamer please confirm that disabling protocol filtering helps. Then re-enable protocol filtering and disable only SSL scanning and let us know if that helps too:
