No new releases since a long time...?

The most important changes in terms of detection and protection are done silently under the hood by means of module and engine updates. As for a new version of ESET's products, it will be announced in our forum, too,  when available for public testing.

It's no that long ago V7 was released actually, and the product usually get's module updates several times a week. So you don't have to worry about being left behind, all changes are not visible, and changes are made where and when they are needed.

Also remember that this is an AV product it needs to be stable and users shouldn't need to download a new build every couple of months, unlike some browsers with their crazy release schedule.  :)

"no changes since a while is very unusual for ESET"

My experience is the opposite it's usual for ESET because they never rush releases out.

I have disabled all desktop boxes so i maybe missed these "update messages" - i always take a look at mouse over version number which is still 7.0.302.26

Yes that's the current release build, you're fine with it.

But if you right-click on the "e" icon in the tray and click About at the bottom of the menu then a window will open up and there you'll see all the modules and the date when they were last updated.

And those modules that have not been updated since quite some time have not been updated only because there's no need to update them.

I'd also mention that some vendors release new versions with a year in the product name although very small or only cosmetic changes were made to the program. This is not ESET's policy and we always strive to bring some new interesting and useful features that users can benefit from.

Keep an eye out for "The program modules have been updated" message boxes from ESET. There have been several in the last week or so.

How do you enable this notifications? Should I set notifications verbosity to Diagnostic?

Notifications about module updates are displayed if only a module has been updated. However, module updates are usually released along with signature database updates so you effectively see only a notification about successful update.

Hello,

Since April 17th (date the message thread was started) ESET has released twelve module updates. Some of these were for people who have enabled pre-release updates, or to fix issues that occur with a specific language (some modules contain text used in dialogs), but the software itself does get "updated" fairly frequently through modules, as SweX and Marcos noted.

You can check which module versions are installed in your copy of the software as follows:

  • Open the ESET User Interface.
  • Select Help and Support in the left navigation pane. The Help and Support pane will open to the right of it.
  • Click on About ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7 at the bottom of the right pane. The About ESET NOD32 Antivirus window will open.
In the About ESET NOD32 Antivirus you will see a list of all installed modules, their version numbers, and release dates in YYYYMMDD format. A little tip: You can copy the module list by clicking anywhere on the list and pressing Ctrl+A to select it, and then Ctrl+C to copy it. You can then paste it into Notepad, an email to support, etc., by pressing Ctrl+V. This is also useful if the text is a little small to read on the monitor.

Aryeh Goretsky

Not all modules needs to be updated. The updates are for performance improvements, enhanced detection, or fixes to the modules itself. For example, take the Updates module. It hasn't been updated since 2013, but that doesn't mean there's something wrong with it. The module itself is working properly and as expected. Why fix something that isn't broken?

Also, modules sometimes go through an internal testing procedure before being released to the general public or the pre-release update server. This is just to ensure the fixes or performance improvements are working properly before being released. This typically means that the module will have the date that the module was created, not released to general public. So to see these updates, take a copy of these modules and then wait a week and compare the release versions to see if there has been changes.

Finally, there are several ESET modules hidden in the background that gets updated that are not displayed on the "About ESET" box. The Rapid Response module was one of those modules that was hidden once upon a time, but was recently displayed in the about box so people can see the version updates. Typically used for troubleshooting.

search 'auto update' you may find it has been broken on computers that start up fast since beta. both my laptop (fails first update 50% of the time, and my desktop which fails to update on first boot 100% of the time.

There are also firewall bugs on Smart that have been there for over 6 months which for freeware is pretty poor for premium paid software it's disgraceful IMHO

Hello,

You may not be running a version of the software which has received all of the module updates. These can be released for a variety of reasons, including to users with pre-release updates enabled, and to fix problems related to localization.

The Update module has nothing to do with how the program detects Internet connection. Currently only dial-up and VPN connections can be detected. However, it's possible that this will be improved in future program versions.
