Re-enable notifications

Recommended Posts

I accidentally disabled The notifications I received about blocked IP addresses (and such), when

using my browser.

I have searched through the menus, the online help, and the forums, trying to re-enable them.

I cannot find anything that works.

Could someone please tell me how to re-enable them

Thank you for your time.

My system

Windows 7 64 home premium
Eset Internet security 13.0.22.0

That option for me is already enabled.
I have tried disabling it and re-enabling it multiple different ways:

Disabled option closed advanced setup, opened advanced setup and re-enabled option.
No effect.

Disabled option, closed advanced setup, restarted windows, opened advanced setup and re-enabled option.
No effect.

Disabled option, closed advanced setup, restarted windows, opened advanced setup and re-enabled option, closed advanced setup, restarted windows.
No effect.

When I accidentally disabled notifications, it was from one of the notification windows that would pop-up.
Where there is an x at the top far right to close that window.
Then to the left of that is a downward facing arrow, when you click on it you are given options:

Manage notifications
Close all notifications
Disable notifications

That is where I accidentally disabled notifications, if that makes any difference.

Make sure the following setting is enabled in Tools -> Notifications section:

Weird I'm not 100 percent but looks like there might be a problem which has caused it to get removed. Possibly uninstalling and reinstalling or running the uninstall and choosing repair. You can always try to backup any custom settings before you do this.

Well, that explains why your not receiving any Eset notifications.

I would opt for an Eset uninstall and reinstall at this point.

Thank you COStark26, itman, and peteyt for your replies and help.

I am going to  try a fix first, and if that doesn't resolve it, uninstall & reinstall.

Does anyone know if exporting your settings, also exports all your firewall rules?

I have a large amount, and would hate to re-do them all again.

Yes. Export will save all your existing Eset settings. You can then Import them after Eset is reinstalled.

One issue here is if this missing Notifications issue is a setting saved via Export feature. If it is, you will be back to the same situation when you Import your prior settings.

Try doing an Eset repair uninstall first and see if that resolves the issue. This is done via Win uninstall programs feature. Eset will ask you whether you want to uninstall or repair. Select repair. This option will not affect any of your current Eset custom settings and hopefully will resolve the missing Notifications issue.

Can you save the rules on their own?

Eset Export feature does this. It creates an .xml file that can be edited. Problem is the settings are a bit cryptic in this file and one mistake can bork your Eset installation.

I checked one of my Eset exported settings .xml file. There is only one section where "Notifications" is specifically referenced. See below screen shot.

@TCS check one of your exported Eset settings files prior to this issue starting and see if this notifications section exists. Now export your Eset settings again and check if this notifications section exists. If the notifications section exists prior to the problem starting and does not exist on the recent export file, this is the section that is controlling Eset's notification display options.

Unfortunately I have never exported settings before today.

I did look at the one I exported, and my section under Notifications seems to looks exactly like yours:

<ITEM NAME="Notifications">
      <NODE NAME="DefaultNotificationMessageContent" TYPE="string" VALUE="" />
      <NODE NAME="ThreatNotificationNoAutoHide" TYPE="number" VALUE="0" />
      <NODE NAME="ThreatNotificationUseDefaultMessage" TYPE="number" VALUE="1" />
      <NODE NAME="ThreatNotificationMessageContent" TYPE="string" VALUE="" />
     </ITEM>

I also found this in my xml:

<ITEM NAME="settings">
     <NODE NAME="BackupEnabled" TYPE="number" VALUE="1" />
     <NODE NAME="BackupInterval" TYPE="number" VALUE="2" />
     <NODE NAME="SnapshotCount" TYPE="number" VALUE="2" />
     <NODE NAME="EnableAdvancedLogging" TYPE="number" VALUE="0" />
     <NODE NAME="ShowNotification" TYPE="number" VALUE="0" />

Under "ShowNotification" the value is "0"

Should it not be a "1"

What does your show?

Yes. Mine shows a value of "1".

Assuming you just exported your settings, change the setting to "1" in the .xml file. Then import that file and see it that resolves the problem.

Changed the value, and imported the file, no effect.

Found this in the xml file as well:

<NODE NAME="Winpopup_Enabled" TYPE="number" VALUE="0" />

Would you mind checking yours again for this value (please)...

Mine is also set to "0".

Looks like your best solution is to uninstall and reinstall Eset.
