Subtitling systems at risk

Just read an interesting article. Seems the systems used by many media players to download/display subtitles have been at risk for quite some time. A lot of media players don't check for content, just expecting text, so it is possible to hide malicious content inside the files. Also because of the way the players recommendation systems work it is possible to make it so malicious versions are picked over legitimate versions. Also this isn't helped by the many different methods used to prepare subtitles. A few of the popular media players have just been updated, but as this isn't often automatic many people could be at risk. It doesn't appear that people have utilised the vulnerability yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if people will now.
