  1. OK.

    • Firewall: So if ESET would be able to add this "type of filtering" (without root) to EMS it would be (also) nice.
    • Web protection and Anti-phising: Yes, that are some different things, but Anti-Phising is already included (in the Premium version), but unfortunately Web protection isn't included yet.
    • Privacy Advisor: @Octavian: Do I assume correctly that you mean the "Security Audit"? I thought with "Privacy Advisor" they meant something that advises you, e.g. in your online practices. That's why I linked to ESET CyberSecurity Training in the first post, because their you can get such an advice.
    • Parental Control: @Arakasi: Funny...

So what do you think, ESET, about adding this features?

  2. Thanks for your answer.  I hope someone of the ESET moderators or ESET stuff would say something about it, but your answer is also quite good.

    • Firewall - requires root - OK, but what's with the 3 others that (purported) have this feature? G Data MobileSecurity, Kaspersky Mobile Security and 360 Mobilesafe. On their official websites I found nothing like a real firewall. So maybe the Wikipedia article is really wrong in this cases.
    • Backup - It's necessary in general - yes, but IMO ESET don't needs it. As you say it's expensive and ESET should be focused on protection against maleware.

And about the mistakes in Wikipedia: If something have the time it would be nice if he could improve the article or at least write it on the talk page (maybe link to this topic). So if we found out that is something wrong on the Wikipedia article (at least with ESET's software) then you are free to edit the article.

(@Arakasi:Yes you are right (and faster...), but you can also edit without signing up - see this article.)

So this are the point's that aren't commented yet (they are "open"):

    • Web protection
    • Privacy Advisor
    • Parental control

So if something wants to say something about this...

  3. Nice feedback of you, @Octavian. Indeed there are some points I can't agree (e.g. "Web Storage" - ESET is a security company and not a cloud storage provider), but you made also some very good points.

You also improved the style of your feedback. :)

By the way: There are also many features that can be added to EMS and that are already implemented in other security apps from some business rivals. What this features are you can read in this topic.

  4. Arakasi, could you please put it into the "code-tags" for SQL. You can do this at the button left of "Quote".

Edit: Oh no... I see it's not pure SQL. You are using .Net?  .NET is a software framework and no language. Maybe you used C++/CLI or something of this kind.

PS: Only about 70 lines of code. That's not much - also for 1 entry. They also have some stuff at ESET......

  5.

    I was simply speculating.

Yeah I'm also speculating - or maybe I'm saying like it could be theoretically. How ESET implements it that is another thing...

have been programming myself for a long time.

Let me give you an example of SQL code for the process you are describing. (standby for this, very busy day for me)

Oh thanks, that's a good idea to "illustrate" it a bit. And I worked a bit with SQL so thanks.

What if ESET is using a different method for storing and keeping up with licenses.

Then they should improve there method or they should use a similar way. We are not their programmers so we can't say how they should do (and can do) it. We only can give tips and say how it can be done.

I would never in my life, ever tell ESET to copy Norton. They fail at life.

Yes! I also have to say sorry for this, but I only want to show that it isn't (also practically) don't requires "massive programming" (link) or that it is "make registration unnecessarily complicated" (link) and it finally is possible.

So only remember "They have done it and so you can do it more than ever!".

  6. @Arakasi: I'm not quite sure what you want to say with this. This topic isn't a topic called "How can ESET prevent software piracy?". It's just about an issue in their update system.

Like I described many times with this issue a licence can theoretically be stolen and activated on another device. This has 2 (or 3) effects:

    1. Maybe the licence get's overused. Then it's a problem for ESET (software piracy). But this is is a offtopic.
    2. The user will probably arouse suspicion, because ESET thinks he (= the user) maybe wanted to overuse his license.
    3. The user maybe will not be able to use the licence on another device, because it will be locked.
  7. Troubleshooting update issues and using SSL on this forum are very different things.

Yes, I admit that this would be maybe a problem. But then just make a setting where the user can put off the encryption (HTTPS --> HTTP), only for temporary troubleshooting.

We don't spy on you and don't strictly check the number of licenses being used.

OK,   piracy protection... very good! ^^

I also don't know what this have to do with this topic? Should it mean "Hey, guys outside - just steal the licence information of some users - We anyway don't check how many devices are using the licence!"?

However, as already said, our distributors are able to check license use and notify the user if overuse

Yeah; I already said that if the license is overused then there is of course no problem for your distributors to find it out. But if I e.g. only use 2 of my 3 devices license and then somebody steals my licence and activates another device the license isn't overused and I can't detected it!

  8. Massive programming?

I don't think so. At activating the license on a device just writes into the database when a license is used, for what device and which product and maybe also an ID to identify it. If there are already 3 or 5 devices using this license then it returns an error.

So if there is checked for updates now it just sends an request to the ESET server (including the ID). The server checks now if the license is expired and if the ID is in the database and if it is then it's all ok.

If the user now deletes an device it just deletes the device in the database (or it set a value to "false" at "activated?").

So if the ESET product checks the next time for updates then it gets an error and the device can't use the license anymore - the license is deleted.

And I don't like to say it, but a business rival has already included such a good feature.

    Here some screenshots:

  9. As I wrote here it's difficult for ESET to find out if an unauthorized person is using the licence. I could also activated the licence so if it don't exceed the count of devices that I (ans also the "bad guy"  ;)) can use it. How ESET should get out that there's something wrong?

And it's nice that system administrators can manage licenses, but this topic is in the "ESET Home User Products"-part, so we want a solution for home user products.

I also don't see a really solution. The easiest and best solution is to encrypt the password or also just send it all over an HTTPS connection. So what it difficult about this? You also use HTTPS at this forum so more than ever you should use it at the updates.

You have to solve the problem at the cause. That ESET would maybe minimize the effect if a licence will be stolen is good, but it don't solves the problem.

To minimize the effect it would also be good to have an online dashboard were you can see yourself if a licence is used by a device that you don't known and then you should be able to delete the licence directly from the online dashboard (without calling ESET or something cumbersome).

  10. it would probably make registration unnecessarily complicated

Why complicated? Just login online with your license username and password. Every ESET products sends already if it will be activated it's information to ESET. During every update check it sends quite the same information and licence and also (as far as I'm know) an ID (so you can differentiate the versions). And if the license is invalid (or it is deleted from the dashboard) then it just sends back "licence is invalid".

To improve security you may also link the licence dashboard with myESET or send an additionally password by email to the users of the license.

In the case of license overuse, distributors usually notify the customer. If license details have leaked, the distributor also changes the password so that the license cannot be misused by 3rd persons.

OK, this is good to know. But how they got out that the license is misused by another person? I can't see it somewhere and ESET can also think that I have activated the license on this device.

And it also would be good to know what to do if I - actually - want to delete my licence from on device. Or can't I do this and I have to left the licence on the specific device until the license expires? If this is so I have to think good which devices I activate with the license, because if I can't "deactivate" the licence for this products have to use it on the device forever (or until it expires).

@Arakasi: Maybe you're right and all know which licences they are using on every device, but if they just want to know it (and maybe there are some people that don't know how many devices are using their license) then they should call ESET? Every time they want to know. Hey, we live in the 21st century and it's much easier to use if you have just a web page!

It's also not only viewing the licence - It's deleting from devices; moving to other devices, it's managing, maybe also seeing how many days remain and then buying... It could also be good for upgrading the license pack (3 devices to 5 devices) for special offers etc.

And as I described above you can see that it's difficult or maybe even not possible to delete a licence from one device and with this solution it would be much easier (and possible) to delete a licence.

  11. Yeah you are right that they have to made progress and add new features, but this features must have to do something with Security/Protection/Anti-Malware, because it's really not good to have an all-in-one solution. If you want features that have nothing to do with Security/Protection/Anti-Malware then you can use other products from other companies.

The best two reasons why this is good are:

    1. Every company should be focused on the features they can implement in a very high quality and they should stay in their scope of business. (colloquial: they should what they can do best) And so they got high-quality products without unnecessary functions.
You have to see that every company has staff - and this staff is maybe specialized to a special thing. So if you include features for an all-in-one solution you have to ways. You can...
      1. employ new stuff and that would cause costs (and so also the products will cost more) or...
      2. use this staff and say them they should develop now the new additionally features. This would cause that the main-features are not more developed so much/good and the quality of the main product can get worse.
    2. If you have are free to use a product for one task and not (have to) use an all-in-one-solution then you can use the products for the other tasks that fit best to you.

We all know that some other firms don't follow this (e.g. the big yellow one) and also make such all-in-one solutions, but I think this isn't the right way and ESET shouldn't go this way.

And the graphics are already really good - they don't have to reinvent the wheel if it is already good. Of course if they improve the GUI or have to make new buttons inside it and so they must redesign it then it's ok to change the GUI, but there is every time the "risk" that it can be worse than before.

And the touchscreen design was already discussed.

  12. I think what stands in the kb article is quite wrong. At first you can see that the kb article is translated into Spanish and Dutch. So this is a bit strange.

And then you can find many download pages of local ESET distributors where they offer multi device licenses:

So it's quite international. Only some countries don't have this product.

Mostly the countries have 3+3 or 5+5 (Windows/Mac + Android) pack or an 3 devices or 5 devices pack.
